CALID-Ghana CALID LBG was formed in April 2001 by a group of Community Development Workers in Tamale, Northern Region.

The Centre for Active Learning and Integrated Development (CALID) is a Non-Governmental, Non-profit, and Non-Partisan organization committed to the promotion of quality life to the poor and marginalized people in the society particularly women and children. CALID is one of the largest Local NGO’s operating in the Northern Region of Ghana. Our programmes cover eight Districts in the Northern region of Ghana namely: Bole, Karaga, Savelugu/Nanton, Tolon, Kumbungu, Sawla/Tuna/Kalba, Gushiegu and the Tamale Metropolis. CALID’s programme areas focus on the following themes: Education, Governance, Health and Livelihood.

FROM GARDENS TO IMPACT: GROWING HEALTHIER FAMILIES IN COMMUNITIES THE CASE OF FUU

At CALID, we believe that improving nutrition starts with empowering communities to produce and access healthier foods.
Through our Home Gardens Initiative in FUU, pregnant women, lactating mothers, widows and women-headed households are cultivating nutrient-rich dark-green leafy vegetables such as bra (hibiscus), aleefu (amaranthus), ayoyo and okra.
These gardens are helping households increase access to iron-rich and nutritious foods, contributing to efforts to prevent anaemia among pregnant women, lactating mothers and children under 5years (CU5). Beyond household consumption, women can also sell surplus produce to generate additional income and strengthen their livelihoods.

Importantly, the initiative promotes the production of vegetables without chemical inputs, supporting healthier diets while encouraging environmentally friendly and sustainable food production.

From a small garden to a healthier household, stronger livelihoods and a healthier community, every garden counts.

CALID at the CSSF Bootcamp 2026 | Day 1

CALID is proud to be strongly represented at the CSSF Bootcamp 2026, a first-of-its-kind five-day learning and peer-exchange platform bringing together 76 civil society actors from 38 organisations across Ghana under the theme:

“From Challenges to Solutions: Strengthening Civil Society through Peer Learning and Collaborative Problem-Solving.”

Day 1 set the tone for the bootcamp by encouraging participants to look inward and critically reflect on the organisational challenges that affect sustainability, effectiveness and impact, with a focus on:

🔹 Governance, Leadership & Organisational Culture
🔹 Peer Learning and Collaborative Problem-Solving
🔹 Practical Solutions and Collective Action

Led by Michael Ohene-Effah, the sessions provided a valuable space for CSOs to openly examine real organisational challenges, exchange experiences and identify practical approaches to strengthening leadership, governance and organisational resilience.

For CALID, the bootcamp represents an important opportunity to learn from peers, reflect on our institutional practices and translate shared learning into stronger systems, more effective programmes and greater impact for the communities we serve.

The CSSF Bootcamp 2026 is being co-implemented in Ghana by STAR-Ghana Foundation and West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI) under the Shifting the Power Programme, with support from Comic Relief and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

📊 Strengthening Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning at CALID

CALID has held an inception meeting with DataCare Consult as part of preparations for an upcoming Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEAL) training for partners implementing projects supported by the Vibrant Village Foundation (VVF).

The engagement aims to strengthen partners’ capacity in Results-Based Management (RBM), improve data management and reporting systems, strengthen results and logic frameworks, and enhance the use of evidence for effective programme planning, implementation, learning, and decision-making.

Today’s inception meeting provided an opportunity for CALID and the consultant to familiarise themselves, clarify expectations, discuss the engagement approach, and introduce the proposed training plan and methodology.

At CALID, we continue to invest in strong systems, quality data, and evidence-based learning to improve programme effectiveness and maximise impact for the communities we serve.
