Last week, UN DESA launched the World Youth Report on Youth Mental Health and Well-being, convening Member States, UN entities, civil society partners, and dozens of young people, including UN Youth Delegates, to examine the social factors shaping youth mental health and well-being.

The launch took place amid growing global concern over young people’s mental health, as youth face intersecting challenges such as poverty and inequality, barriers to education and decent work, digital harms, conflict, social exclusion, and climate-related stress.

In her keynote address, Bjørg Sandkjær, ASG for Policy Coordination of UN DESA, underscored that “addressing youth mental health requires confronting inequality itself through coordinated, equitable, and inclusive social policies that expand opportunity, reduce exclusion, and strengthen solidarity.” She emphasized that the Report’s findings should inform intergovernmental processes, including the Commission for Social Development, and support the implementation of the World Programme of Action for Youth, alongside broader efforts to realize the commitments included in the Doha Political Declaration adopted during the Second World Summit for Social Development.

The World Youth Report adopts a youth-informed social determinants approach, examining how education, work, family dynamics, poverty, digital environments, societal attitudes, and climate change shape mental health outcomes. Presenting the findings, Masumi Ono, Chief of the Social Inclusion and Participation Branch of UN DESA, highlighted that inequalities in opportunities are closely linked to disparities in mental health and well-being; stigma and discrimination continue to limit access to care, education, and work; and preventive, community-based, and youth-responsive approaches are essential to closing mental health gaps.

A central feature of the Report – and the launch – was the emphasis on youth lived experiences. UN Youth Delegates Jorina Kaminski of Switzerland and Cevor Tikerpuu of Finland shared their insights.

“Being young means having options; It means having a whole life ahead of you. But today, being young also means not being sure whether the world will allow you to have a future in it. This growing uncertainty is what drives mental health problems experienced by so many young people today. Structural inequalities are the root causes of distress among youth, and prevention is key in addressing those structural problems like discrimination, poverty or unequal access to education," Jorina said during her presentation.

Cevor added that, “Growing up in poverty taught me that mental health reflects the conditions of our physical environment. The World Youth Report underlines this. Young people are faced with global crises such as climate change, wars and rising inequalities. Preventive, inclusive social policies are essential to addressing the root causes why young people are losing hope, trust in societies and meaning in their life. An ideal world is not where every person is in therapy, but rather where the physical environment nurtures our mental well-being.” United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA)

From 2nd to 10th February 2026, SEDARVP GHANA marked a proud milestone by participating in the 64th Session of the Commission for Social Development (CSocD64) at the United Nations Headquarters, New York.
With ECOSOC Consultative Status, UNFCCC Observer Status, and Green Climate Fund (GCF) Observer Status, SEDARVP GHANA joined governments, UN agencies, and civil society organizations from across the world to engage in high-level discussions on inclusive social development, poverty eradication, social protection systems, and social inclusion.
Bringing Community Voices to Global Spaces
For SEDARVP GHANA, participation at CSocD64 was not merely symbolic—it was a mission to carry the voices, realities, and aspirations of grassroots communities in Ghana and Sub-Saharan Africa into global policy spaces.
Throughout the session, our delegation actively participated in plenary meetings, side events, and multi-stakeholder dialogues. We shared community-driven perspectives on youth empowerment, rural development, social equity, and climate-responsive social policies, emphasizing the urgent need to place people at the center of development planning.
Connecting Local Realities with Global Commitments
The 64th Session of the Commission for Social Development provided a powerful platform to strengthen the link between local action and international commitments. SEDARVP GHANA reaffirmed that sustainable social development cannot be achieved without listening to those most affected by inequality, poverty, and exclusion.
Our engagement also fostered meaningful connections with fellow civil society actors, development partners, and UN institutions—laying the groundwork for future collaborations, shared learning, and collective advocacy.
A Moment of Reflection and Responsibility
SEDARVP GHANA’s presence at CSocD64 reflects years of consistent grassroots engagement, volunteer-driven action, and unwavering commitment to social justice. It demonstrates that community-based organizations have a vital role to play in shaping global development agendas.

*Important: Tomorrow’s YER Session on– What to Expect*

Dear Participant,

We hope you are doing well.
This is a reminder for you to join tomorrow’s Youth Eco-Resilience (YER) session, where you will participate in an insightful presentation on *Climate, Conflict & Cooperation.*

This session is one of the core foundations of the YER programme, and your active presence will be essential.

*What to Expect*
Tomorrow’s session will explore:

🌍 How climate change drives pressure on communities.
You will understand how environmental stress—like droughts, floods and loss of livelihoods—shapes people’s daily realities.

⚠️ How these pressures can contribute to conflict
We will break down real-world examples of how climate stress leads to tensions over land, water, identity and migration.

🤝 How cooperation becomes a tool for resilience and peace.
You will learn how young people, communities, and nations can turn climate challenges into opportunities for collaboration rather than conflict.

*Why This Session Is Important for You*
By the end of the session, you will be able to:

✔ clearly explain the links between climate stress and human security
✔ understand how conflict emerges and how it can be prevented
✔ identify pathways for cooperation within your own community
✔ sharpen your capacity as a young leader ready to take action
✔ gain essential knowledge that will guide you throughout the entire YER program.

This session is designed to be engaging, interactive, and deeply reflective—not a lecture, but a shared learning experience.

*Your Role*
You are encouraged to come prepared to:

✨ Share your own observations or experiences on climate impacts
✨ Participate actively in discussions
✨ Reflect on practical solutions for your community
✨ Connect with fellow participants from across Africa and Europe
✨ Partake in all the activities, post survey and post assignment and submit on time.
✨ Connect with other participants from other countries and collaborate beyond this training.

Your voice matters in shaping this global conversation.

SEDARVP GHANA, in a vibrant collaboration with partner organizations from Bulgaria, Spain, Cyprus, Uganda, Malawi, and Kenya, has successfully concluded its three-year Digital Gender Equality (DIGE) project with a powerful virtual conference titled “Girls in Leadership: Amplifying Voices.”
Held on November 15, 2025, the event united young women from across the globe for two hours of inspiration, storytelling, and strategic learning. The conference served as a dynamic platform to celebrate the project's achievements and empower a new generation of female leaders.
The agenda featured three impactful panels designed to equip participants with practical tools. The first, “The Power of Your Story,” featured compelling narratives from Raha and Shadia Nassanga, who demonstrated how to transform personal challenges into opportunities for leadership and innovation.
This was followed by “Building Your Village: The Power of Community & Collective Action,” where speakers Anjelika and Immaculate shared powerful insights on creating strong support systems. The final panel, “My Leadership Journey,” featured DIGE alumni Marjan and Najat, who shared their personal paths to leadership, offering valuable lessons and closing the event on a deeply motivational note.
SEDARVP GHANA extends its profound gratitude to all dedicated partners, participants, and the incredible team—including facilitators Maria and Beida, and all speakers—whose contributions were instrumental in bringing this vision to life. A special acknowledgement goes to Hajia Samiha, Executive Director of WOSAG GenZ 4 Change, and her mentees for their participation and support.
The resounding success of this conference marks not an end, but a promising beginning for the continued journey of these amplified voices as they lead change in their communities and beyond.
