🌍 Bridging the gap between climate science and public understanding in Ghana.

When climate science stays locked in research papers, communities miss out on vital evidence needed to build resilience. Through the CLARE-supported initiative, a collaboration between CDKN Ghana, Multimedia Group Limited and Center for Climate Change and Sustainability Studies (C3SS) at the University of Ghana, researchers and journalists partnered to transform complex data into compelling, human-centered stories.

📊 Key achievements from the project:

✅64 evidence-based stories published across thematic areas (Water, Energy, Agriculture, Migration, Biodiversity, Disaster Risk, and Health)

✅200+ media outputs produced for radio, TV, and online in multiple languages.

✅69 short-form digital explainers created for social media channels

✅1M+ estimated monthly listenership across television and radio broadcasts

✅35 knowledge brokers (21 journalists & 11 researchers) equipped for long-term collaboration

By placing community voices at the center and grounding journalism in scientific data, this initiative proves the power of co-creation in driving effective climate action.

From a chance encounter at the Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) ‘25 to leading a growing initiative , EJ Arhin🇬🇭 | Climate | Loss & Damage’s journey is a powerful testament to what happens when ambition meets targeted opportunity and mentorship.

When he first met the team, Eben reached out with a clear drive to learn, grow, be mentored, and navigate the climate landscape. That initial conversation kicked off a remarkable path of growth and impact which we are proud of!

His dedication quickly translated into securing a role with one of the local initiatives supported by the team.
Stepping into the Youth Climate Reporters (YCR) training, he sharpened his capacity to translate complex climate science into compelling narratives. His journey through to the African Youth Negotiators Fellowship (AYNF),and leading the Loud and Green podcast initiative, highlights why providing young people with guidance, networks, and platforms matters. Is Ghana’s water crisis a policy problem, or an implementation problem? Speaking at the WaterAid and JoyNews National Dialogue, CDKN Country Programme Coordinator Valerie Kplorm Aku Nutakor emphasised:

It is both.

A policy can exist on paper, can be well-intentioned, technically sound, and aligned with national development priorities but if the people it is designed for cannot see themselves in it, understand it, or participate in shaping it, implementation becomes much harder.

A bottom-up approach is not simply about consulting communities after the policy has already been developed. It is about recognising local knowledge and lived experiences as part of the policy-making process itself. Because communities understand their realities differently.

These perspectives matter because when people are meaningfully involved in policy development, they are more likely to understand well, identify with it, and contribute to making it work.

When women sing, communities listen.

Climate action is not only shaped in policy rooms; it is also carried through stories, songs, and everyday conversations.
Across many communities, traditional songs and community radio are helping women inspire action and participate more actively in local decision-making.

The most effective climate messages are often those that connect local experience with scientific knowledge, making them accurate, trusted, and culturally meaningful. Recognising and elevating women’s voices strengthens their influence and ensures that climate responses reflect the realities of the communities most affected.

Building resilient communities requires collaboration. Partnerships among community members, radio stations, and local authorities can create more inclusive approaches to climate governance and adaptation.
