Funded by Global Affairs Canada, WEE-NORTH helps women join the workforce as welders, agricultural mechanics, small engine repair technicians and electricians. These opportunities increase productivity, profitability and access to work for women. To overcome prevailing gender stereotypes and barriers, WEE-NORTH uses approaches that engage men in creating change in gender relations in their communities.

⚑🌟 From Fear to Power: Niamatu Lights the Way! 🌟⚑

Meet Abubakari Niamatu from Wa West β€” a proud 2024 WEE-North graduate who turned her fear into strength and her dreams into reality! πŸ’ͺ✨
For a long time, Niamatu dreamed of becoming an electrician βš‘β€¦ but doubt kept holding her back. She worried, β€œWhat if I fail?” β€” and nearly never started at all.
But then something changed. πŸ’‘
After seeing information about WEE-North on social media, she made a bold decision: she chose to try. πŸš€
Niamatu enrolled at St. Basilide’s Technical Institute in Kaleo, where she trained in electrical installation πŸ”ŒπŸ› οΈ. With hands-on skills and growing confidence, she proved to herself that she could succeed β€” and she did! πŸ™ŒπŸ”₯
Today, she is:
✨ Self-employed and earning her own income
✨ Supporting herself and helping to feed her family 🍲
✨ Respected for her quality work and flexibility πŸ‘
And she didn’t stop there…
Niamatu is now a leader! πŸŽ‰
She serves as the Upper West Regional Organizer and National Network Organizer for the WEE-North Network πŸ’ΌπŸŒ
Her journey is a powerful reminder: sometimes the biggest obstacle is fear β€” and the greatest victory is simply starting. πŸ’₯
πŸ‘πŸ‘ Let’s celebrate Niamatu β€” a true inspiration and a shining example of what women in trades can achieve! πŸ’›βš‘

🌿🏠 Women Building the Future with Eco-Construction & Nubian Vaults! πŸ§±πŸŒπŸ‘·πŸΎβ€β™€οΈ

WEE-North is proud to partner with Association La VoΓ»te Nubienne (AVN) on this initiative: Integration of Women into Nubian Vault in Ghana (IWiN) πŸŒπŸ—οΈ

WEE-North Network is thrilled to share some exciting news! πŸŽ‰βœ¨ Our members have just completed the first phase of constructing two simple Nubian Vault buildings at Nwodua and Kpachilo in Northern Region! πŸ™ŒπŸΎπŸ‘πŸΎ

This milestone was made possible by the dedication and teamwork of 24 young tradeswomen and expert masons from L’Association la VoΓ»te Nubienne (AVN), who worked tirelessly for 20 days πŸ’ͺπŸΎβ›οΈπŸ§±β€”proving once again that women are making their mark in construction and sustainable building! 🌿🌍

The structures will serve important purposes in their communities:

🍲 A kitchen at Kofi Annan Technical Institute in Nwodua
🏑 A living space for a resident in Kpachilo

These cool, eco-friendly buildings show how traditional knowledge and modern training can come together to create sustainable, climate-smart construction 🌞🌱🧱 while opening doors for women in the building trades. πŸ‘·πŸΎβ€β™€οΈβœ¨

A huge shout-out to the WEE-North Network and Nubian Vault team for their collaboration and support on this inspiring project! πŸ€πŸ’š Together we are building skills, building opportunity, and building the future! πŸš€πŸŒ

We can’t wait to see the final finishing touches added to these wonderful structures! πŸŽ‰πŸ πŸ˜Š

What a day in Tamale! πŸŒžπŸš—

Today I was hosting some visitors and showing them around town to see a few of the sights. First stop: the wonderful Red Clay Studio & Museum 🏺🎨

And who did I run into there? None other than Stella the plumber πŸ”§ and Alimatu the tiler πŸ§±β€”both from Bunkpurugu! They were in Tamale working with their employers and we bumped into each other completely by surprise. What a moment! πŸ˜„πŸ‘

Then later in the day, we stopped for a little treat at KFC πŸ—πŸŸβ€¦ and guess what? Another surprise! There was Felicia the electrician ⚑ with her friend. More excitement, more laughter, and lots of proud smiles.

Seeing these WEE-North graduates out in the world made my heart full. ❀️

Was it a coincidence that I met three grads in one day? Not really! With 2,680 WEE-North graduates spread across Northern Ghana, it’s becoming normal to run into them wherever I go. And that’s exactly how it should be.

✨ WEE-North is SIX years old! ✨
That’s six years of breaking barriers, building skills, and opening doors for young women in the industrial trades across Northern Ghana. Now it’s time to reflect, strengthen what we’ve built, and make sure these gains last for years to come. πŸ’ͺπŸΎπŸ—οΈ
Since January, our incredible Community Relations Coordinator Noella Kaburi has been on the roadβ€”traveling across all five regions of Northern Ghana and every one of the 55 districts where our 2,680 tradeswomen come from. πŸš—πŸ—ΊοΈ
Yesβ€”every single district in Northern Ghana has been reached by the WEE-North Project! πŸ™ŒπŸΎ
Why does that matter? Because we are determined to change the face of industrial trades in Northern Ghana. πŸ”§πŸ‘©πŸΎβ€πŸ
And what better way to do that than by training young women in the trades in every district, so communities can proudly say:
πŸ’¬ β€œYes, we have skilled tradeswomen right hereβ€”ready to support construction, development, and maintenance in our district.”
As part of our sustainability plan, we met with District Chief Executives (DCEs) across the regions to share:
πŸ“„ A list of the tradeswomen in their district
πŸ“˜ The WEE-North Strategic Business Plan
πŸ™ And our sincere appreciation for their support
We are confident that when development opportunities arise, our trained tradeswomen will be readyβ€”and districts will know exactly where to find them. πŸ—οΈβœ¨
But sustainability takes a whole community. With support from District and Municipal Assemblies, especially Planners and Gender Desk Officers, Noella also strengthened partnerships with industry and trades associations in every district. 🀝🏾
Through each WEE-Group (women’s multi-trade association), she brought together:
πŸ‘‘ Traditional Authorities
🏘️ Community leaders
🏭 Industry representatives
Together they formed Community Support Groups that help ensure:
🏒 WEE-Group Service Centers are officially opened and used
🧰 Tradeswomen receive jobs and contracts
πŸ“ˆ Young women stay active and employed in their trades
And the results are already showing! πŸŽ‰
πŸ“Š Employment among last year’s graduates has risen to 70%!
That’s real progressβ€”and a clear sign that communities across Northern Ghana are embracing skilled women in the trades. πŸ’₯
πŸ™ To our partners, districts, communities, and supporters: thank youβ€”and keep it up!
πŸ‘·πŸΎβ€β™€οΈβœ¨ Tradeswomen are here to stay. βœ¨πŸ‘·πŸΎβ€β™€οΈ

WEE-North is proud to partner with Association La VoΓ»te Nubienne (AVN) on an exciting new initiative: Integration of Women into Nubian Vault in Ghana (IWiN) πŸŒπŸ—οΈ

AVN is an international organization championing eco-construction through the revival of the Nubian Vault technique β€” a time-tested method of building strong, beautiful homes using local earth, without timber or expensive imported materials. 🌱🧱 This approach reduces deforestation, lowers construction costs, strengthens climate resilience, and creates skilled local jobs. It is practical, proven, and rooted in African building traditions.

Through IWiN, two Nubian Vault buildings will be constructed in Ghana, with WEE-North members serving as the primary workforce πŸ‘·πŸΎβ€β™€οΈβœ¨ Our young women in block laying, electrical installation, and plumbing are not assisting β€” they are leading on site. AVN’s technical team will provide hands-on supervision and mentoring throughout construction, ensuring quality craftsmanship and full skills transfer.

The first phase of the project, known as "The Academy", took place from 4th–5th February. πŸ“ This launch session marked the official start of activities upskilling 14 trainees across the building trades. It strengthened their technical competence while introducing them to climate-smart construction principles and the Nubian Vault method πŸ”§πŸ“

This partnership goes beyond building structures. It is about building women’s technical expertise, expanding green work opportunities, and demonstrating that sustainable construction in Ghana can be environmentally sound and economically empowering πŸ’ͺ🏾🌿

The future of eco-construction is local. And women are at the center of it. πŸš€

Big day with Minister of Food and Agriculture and WFP Country Director! πŸŽ‰πŸŒΎ

Today, the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Mr. Eric Opoku, and the WFP Country Director, Ms. Aurore Rusiga, visited Tamale to see firsthand an exciting agriculture mechanization training program for 100 young women.

This is part of a larger plan to train 1,000 young women and men in 2026, led by WFP and supported by MOFA, both combining expertise to unlock the potential of youth in Northern Ghana to feed the nation.

We’re proud that WEE-North has been contracted to facilitate this program, drawing on our proven model to recruit trainees and build both strong technical skills and essential life skills through our women’s economic empowerment approach. The program is being delivered with the Ministry's Agriculture Extension Service at Dabokpa and Kofi Annan Technical Institutes, which are both long-standing and trusted WEE-North partners.

This is what investing in youth, skills, and food security looks like. The future of mechanized agriculture is here, and women are right at the center of it. πŸ’ͺ🚜🌱
