Ibrahim Mahama is the solution to northern music, movies and creative art in Ghana and beyond.

In September 2026 alone, Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama has received two major international recognitions that further highlight his contribution to the world of contemporary art.

He was honoured by France with the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters). He also received the 2026 Arnold Bode Prize in Germany, one of the significant recognitions associated with contemporary art.

For many people in Northern Ghana, his journey should be a source of pride and inspiration. Yet, sometimes, we struggle to recognise the greatness that is emerging from among us. We can become too distant, too hesitant, or sometimes too proud to get closer, learn, collaborate, and grow together with people who are creating opportunities beyond our immediate communities.

These recognitions did not come from asking friends and family to vote for him with money or airtime. They came through years of artistic work, ideas, exhibitions, institutions, and spaces that have continued to speak for themselves.

From Red Clay, to Nkrumah Voli Ni, to SCCA Tamale, Ibrahim Mahama's work has created platforms for art, history, culture, dialogue, and new possibilities.

His achievements should remind us that greatness can emerge from our own communities. We should learn to recognise it, celebrate it, support it, and create opportunities for others to grow alongside it.

His work is already speaking. Perhaps it is time for us to listen.

Northern Ghana

Ibrahim Mahama was, on September 10, 2026, decorated with the insignia of Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by H. E. Mrs. Diarra DIMÉ LABILLE, Ambassador of France to Ghana.

The award represents the official French recognition of Mahama’s significant contributions to the arts and literature, as well as his efforts towards sustaining these fields in Ghana, ahead of his first major exhibition in Paris, The Harvest Season, scheduled to open at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain from October 22, 2026, through February 28, 2027.

This accomplishment, as he expressed in an interview with Naa Damba, serves as a projection for the culture and people of Northern Ghana.

He is also serving as a role model for the younger generation, encouraging them to dream beyond what they see today and to believe in the possibilities that lie ahead.
