We have spent the past month at Chiraa in the Sunyani West Municipality with our determined young mothers.

Similar to our experience with the earlier cohorts, this fourth cohort has been taken through series of education and training with the Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana, Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit, and the team at InspiNest.

It gives us great comfort that these young mothers are not only leaving as skilled artisans but most importantly as empowered individuals enthused about driving positive changes in their communities.

With about three months remaining in the life of our Young Mothers in Entrepreneurship Project and one final cohort to go, we held our second official stakeholder engagement.

We were privileged to welcome yet again representatives from the Youth Employment Agency, National Youth Authority, Department of Social Welfare, Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana, Children’s Department, WAN Hive Ghana, as well as some project beneficiaries.

The project management team presented comprehensive updates including the challenges encountered thus far. Our esteemed and experienced stakeholders subsequently took turns to share valuable commendations and recommendations.

Together, we outlined the way forward for the project’s next critical phase: the disbursement of microgrants to support 15 entrepreneurial ventures.

A detailed overview of the microgrant scheme will be shared on our website soon!

Another cohort of determined young mothers has been empowered with the knowledge and skills required to set into motion a life of self-agency and improved livelihood.

Our journey with these incredible young women in Nkrankrom and Nkrankese has been both challenging and rewarding. Beyond equipping them with skills and knowledge, we’ve learned immensely, formed strong bonds, and navigated emotional obstacles together.

As everyday witnesses of the transformative impact on the lives of the girls, InspiNest remains grateful to both our foreign and local partners for joining hands together to occasion such a life-changing project!

What better way to begin our work with the second cohort from Nkrankrom and Nkrankese than with a mindset change forum, coupled with sexual and reproductive health and rights education?

With concerted efforts, a new chapter has been opened in the lives of 67 young mothers from Kwatire, Adoe and Adentia. This chapter tells a story of empowerment, financial independence, focus and better life decisions.

Congratulations to all 67 young mothers who constituted the first cohort of the Young Mothers in Entrepreneurship project!🎉❤️

They have affirmed our conviction that with targeted support, lives can be reshaped for the better.

Our girls had a pleasant surprise visit from France Volontaires Ghana during their usual morning discussion forum.

The delegation comprising of Elsa Prévost, Communications and Partnership Relations Officer, and Yawo Doku, Volunteering Development Officer, were excited to meet the determined young mothers.

They shared some nuggets of wisdom with the ladies and also encouraged them to cultivate the spirit of volunteerism.

Our collaboration with the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) became imperative after a survey of our beneficiaries revealed a deeply troubling reality.

By comparing the ages of the young mothers to that of their babies, we were dismayed to discover that nearly all of our beneficiaries had become pregnant before reaching Ghana’s legal age of consent—16 years.

Even more alarming was the normalization of this issue within the communities from which these girls were selected. This disturbing trend, combined with the high rates of emotional, physical, and sexual violence experienced by girls in Ghana, compelled us to seek a partnership with DOVVSU, a critical unit of the Ghana Police Service.

In a forum led by DSP Beatrice Korsah, the Bono Regional Coordinator for DOVVSU, our beneficiaries received vital education on their rights and the support systems available to them in cases of abuse.

This important information will also be shared more broadly within their communities through local Information Centres and public gatherings, ensuring the message reaches as many people as possible.

The Young Mothers in Entrepreneurship Project is certainly more than equipping the young mothers with entrepreneurial skills. We will be tackling all emerging challenges head-on for a more comprehensive development of our girls and their communities.
