Our collaboration with the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) became imperative after a survey of our beneficiaries revealed a deeply troubling reality.
By comparing the ages of the young mothers to that of their babies, we were dismayed to discover that nearly all of our beneficiaries had become pregnant before reaching Ghana’s legal age of consent—16 years.
Even more alarming was the normalization of this issue within the communities from which these girls were selected. This disturbing trend, combined with the high rates of emotional, physical, and sexual violence experienced by girls in Ghana, compelled us to seek a partnership with DOVVSU, a critical unit of the Ghana Police Service.
In a forum led by DSP Beatrice Korsah, the Bono Regional Coordinator for DOVVSU, our beneficiaries received vital education on their rights and the support systems available to them in cases of abuse.
This important information will also be shared more broadly within their communities through local Information Centres and public gatherings, ensuring the message reaches as many people as possible.
The Young Mothers in Entrepreneurship Project is certainly more than equipping the young mothers with entrepreneurial skills. We will be tackling all emerging challenges head-on for a more comprehensive development of our girls and their communities.
