Monday is the International Day for People of African Descent — a chance to celebrate the extraordinary contributions of the African diaspora around the world.

“We also recall the work still to be done towards ensuring the full enjoyment of human rights, equality and opportunity by people of African descent,” UN Secretary-General António Guterres stressed.

“Let’s re-affirm our collective commitment to dismantling systemic racism and achieving equality, justice, and transformative change in the daily lives of people of African descent everywhere.”

Earthquakes strike without warning, leaving lasting impacts on people, communities and generations.

On Wednesday’s first-ever International Day in Memory of the Victims of Earthquakes, join us in remembering those affected — and in calling on countries to invest in preparedness, resilience and risk reduction to help protect lives and livelihoods when disasters hit.
