ORGIIS Ghana, an Environmental Protection and Forest Conservation Agency, has caught some women harvesting large-scale baobab leaves in Chiana in the Kassena Nankana West District of the Upper East Region. This has sparked an environmental crisis and is totally against the laws that protect our environment and forest reserves in Ghana. The baobab tree, often referred to as the "tree of life" due to its numerous benefits, is under threat as local and external forces strip its leaves at an unsustainable rate.

The rapid increase in harvesting of baobab leaves has raised alarm among environmentalists, local communities and environmental protection agencies over the years. Baobab trees play a crucial role in the ecosystem by providing shelter and food and most especially, its fruit contains a lot of nutritional benefits. Overharvesting can lead to the decline of these vital trees, affecting biodiversity and the livelihoods of those who depend on them.

Ghana is increasingly capitalizing on the economic potential of the baobab fruit, often referred to as the "superfood" due to its rich nutritional profile. The baobab fruit, harvested primarily in the northern regions, has become a significant export commodity, driving local economies and providing sustainable income for many rural communities. In recent years, Ghana has seen a surge in international demand, particularly from Europe and North America, where the fruit is prized for its high vitamin C content and antioxidant properties. This burgeoning market is enhancing Ghana's export portfolio, contributing to economic diversification and fostering opportunities for agribusiness development in the country.

Our organization, dedicated to the protection and preservation of trees, has been at the forefront of raising awareness about this issue. We have documented a significant decrease in the health and number of baobab trees in the region due to excessive leaf harvesting. The loss of these trees not only threatens the environment but also the cultural heritage of the people of Chiana and many communities, who have long revered the baobab.
The small girl in these pictures, called Ayapoa Akudbilla, put efforts that have gained significant attention, both locally and on social media. Her determination and the innocence of her plea have resonated with many, bringing a much-needed spotlight to the issue. "I love the baobab tree. It gives us food and shade," Ayapoa said!
Our organization stands in solidarity with Ayapoa and the community of Chiana. We are calling for immediate action to regulate the harvesting of baobab leaves and to implement sustainable practices that will ensure the preservation of these trees for generations to come.

As the situation unfolds, it is clear that the fight to save the baobab trees of Chiana is far from over. With continued advocacy, community support, and the unwavering spirit of young activists like Ayapoa, there is hope that these iconic trees will continue to thrive and sustain future generations.

For further information on how to support our efforts and join the fight to protect the baobab trees, please contact our office on 0242295258. You can also follow us on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube @ ORGIIS GHANA.
