THE SPRINKLING OF NGMA (MILLET)

In the video: The Wɔyo (Traditional Priestess) sprinkles Ngma (millet) over the people gathered at the Grand Durbar. The ritual expresses thanksgiving to the Supreme Deity, lesser deities and the ancestors for their protection of the community and for a bountiful harvest.

The Grand Durbar is led by HRM Nɛnɛ Dr. Tei-Djahene Korabo IV, Manya Jorpanya Matsɛ and Senior Asafoatse of the Sɛ (Shai) Dangme Traditional Area.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF SPRINKLING NGMA

The sprinkling of Ngma (millet) is an important ritual associated with Ngmayem and carries deep historical, cultural and spiritual significance.

According to the history and traditions passed down through generations, the ancestors endured periods of severe famine while living in their ancestral mountain settlements. The eventual return of rainfall and a successful millet harvest became an occasion for thanksgiving and celebration.

The sprinkling of Ngma therefore symbolises gratitude, survival, abundance and renewal. Prayers accompanying the ritual seek continued protection, peace, good health, long life and abundant harvests for the community.

Beyond the Grand Durbar, the ritual also serves as a living connection between present generations and the experiences of their ancestors, helping preserve an important part of Dangme cultural heritage for generations to come.
