SPOTLIGHT FRIDAY: You cannot spray walls without first winning trust. That bridge between the Obuasi Malaria Control Programme (OMCP) and the people was Alhaji Amadu Salifu. As a Community Liaison Officer who transitioned to Information, Education and Communications (IE&C) Manager, Alhaji Amadu worked closely with chiefs, opinion leaders, families, and volunteers. He listened to concerns, answered questions, and helped communities understand why spraying mattered. From durbars to doorstep conversations, he helped turn hesitation into acceptance and participation. Because of his work, doors opened. Because of his work, households said yes. And today, we are honouring the voice that brought communities along. AngloGold Ashanti Ghana

Three weeks in and already, 128,771 people are protected. That’s 128,771 families sleeping safer and 128,771 reasons to keep going.

Our 2026 IRS campaign is on track to protect over 1.5 million people across all 16 operational districts, covering the entire Upper West Region, Obuasi East and Obuasi Municipal in Ashanti, as well as Builsa North, Builsa South and Kassena Nankana West in the Upper East Region.

But we need your help to get there. When our spray teams arrive, open your doors. Protect your household for the next 12 months and encourage your neighbour to do the same. Malaria is preventable. Protection starts with you.

Some moments feel like history the instant they unfold. This was one of them. On 28th April 2006, after a year of careful planning and deep community engagement, Obuasi stood still as the then President, HE John Agyekum Kufuor, arrived to officially launch the Obuasi Malaria Control Programme. Deliberately aligned with African Malaria Day, the moment carried significance far beyond Obuasi. What began with AngloGold Ashanti Ghana as a local response to a pressing health challenge had become a symbol of hope and a model for action. At Black Park, the municipality came alive. Leaders, traditional authorities, health officials, school children, families, and the media gathered with one shared purpose. There was colour. There was pageantry. But above all, there was a resolve to control malaria and save lives. Then came the outdooring of the spray operators, clad in full protective gear, standing in formation, ready to take the fight against malaria directly into homes. You could feel it in the air. A quiet confidence. A belief that something truly transformative had begun. And with that, Obuasi stood ready. Ghana Health Service National Malaria Elimination Programme - Ghana The Global Fund

As we commemorated World Malaria Day this year, themed “Driven to End Malaria. Now We Can. Now We Must.”, it was also a moment of reflection and pride as AngloGold Ashanti Malaria Control - Ghana marks 20 years of impact in the fight against malaria.

To celebrate this milestone meaningfully, AngloGold Ashanti Ghana Obuasi Mine, in partnership with AGAMal and key stakeholders, brought the message closer to the people through a Mini Health Clinic in Obuasi, delivering free primary healthcare services to residents.

From malaria testing and treatment to general health screening and education, the initiative reinforced a simple message: access to care saves lives, and prevention remains our strongest tool.

We are excited to see this effort featured by Ghana Broadcasting Corporation in the video highlights below.

SPOTLIGHT FRIDAY: Plans on paper do not save lives. Ex*****on does. And that was Eric Obu Buetey’s domain. As the first Operations Head, Eric turned strategy into action on the ground. He oversaw spray logistics, field coordination, safety protocols, and daily deployments across Obuasi. When communities opened their doors, it was Eric’s systems and discipline that ensured operators arrived prepared, protected, and professional. His work made large-scale indoor residual spraying possible, year after year. He did not seek the spotlight. He built the engine. And today, we celebrate the man who kept the IRS wheels turning, Captain Eric Obu Buetey. AngloGold Ashanti Ghana

As our 20-year journey continues to unfold, one thing is clear: the work is far from over, and neither is our resolve. Preparations are far advanced for this year’s Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) campaign, and the momentum on the ground is strong.

Over the past weeks, our Middle-Level Officers have completed intensive 3-day onboarding sessions, equipping them with the tools, knowledge, and coordination needed to deliver effectively in the field. In Obuasi Municipal and Obuasi East Municipal, sessions held from 24th to 26th March brought together key leadership, including the Municipal Health Directors and Malaria Focal Persons from both municipalities. Their active participation reflects the strength of local ownership driving this intervention.

Further north, in Wa, the Upper West Regional capital, the scale of engagement was just as encouraging. Middle-Level Officers from all 11 districts in the Upper West Region, alongside 3 districts from the Upper East Region, converged for a joint onboarding session from 8th to 10th April. The Regional Director of Health Services was represented through the Regional Malaria Focal Person, who highlighted the tangible impact of AGAMal’s IRS efforts.
One statistic stood out. Malaria deaths in the region dropped from 8 in 2024 to just 1 in 2025. This is what sustained, coordinated intervention looks like.
The session also benefited from the presence of the Oversight Officer of the Country Coordinating Mechanism (CCM) and a representative from the National Malaria Elimination Programme - Ghana (NMEP), reinforcing the strong collaboration behind these efforts.

As we step into another spray season, we do so with evidence, partnerships, and a shared commitment to push even further.
A malaria-free future is not just an ambition. It is within reach.

The story of our 20-year journey of impact continues… On 3 April 2006, something historic happened in . After months of planning, rigorous training, deep community engagement, and meticulous preparation, the first Indoor Residual Spraying campaign commenced.
It was more than a technical operation; it was a promise delivered. Young, energetic men, drawn from their own communities and trained to World Health Organization (WHO) standards, entered homes not only with the spray pump and insecticide, but with a shared purpose to provide protection for families from malaria.
That day marked the beginning of a transformative journey, one that would strengthen communities, protect generations, and bring hope directly to people's doors.
Every wall sprayed told a story of commitment. Every home visited brought us closer to healthier families. National Malaria Elimination Programme - Ghana AngloGold Ashanti Ghana The Global Fund Ghana Health Service

On February 10 and 11, 2026, AngloGold Ashanti Malaria Control - Ghana joined Malaria Programme leaders and managers from twelve (12) African countries for a high-level regional workshop titled ‘Tech-Enabled Larval Source Management (LSM) for Malaria Elimination.’ Held at the Palms by Eagle Hotel, the summit signalled a sophisticated shift in the continent's fight against the disease.
Serving as a technical partner, AGAMal collaborated with SORA Technology and the National Malaria Elimination Programme - Ghana to showcase a smarter approach to vector control. The core of this innovation lies in AI-supported drone technology, which allows for the precise identification and treatment of mosquito breeding sites, strengthening prevention efforts before transmission begins.
Chaired by Professor Samuel Dadzie, the two-day workshop drew a distinguished assembly of international and domestic stakeholders. Key dignitaries in attendance included Ghana’s Deputy Minister of Health, Professor Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, the Ambassador to the Embassy of Japan in Ghana, Ambassador Yoshimoto Hiroshi, the JICA Country Director, and the World Health Organization (WHO) Country Director for Ghana. AGAMal’s strategic direction was represented by a core leadership team, including Eric Fosu-Kwabi (Acting Programme Director), Ignatius Williams (Head of Monitoring and Evaluation), Kwame Desewu (Entomologist), and Jonas Raphael Manu (Acting Head of Finance).
Highlights included a keynote address by the Deputy Minister of Health and a comprehensive look at Ghana’s journey in tech-enabled LSM presented by the NMEP. Following a roundtable discussion led by Andrew Saibu of the Innovative Vector Control Consortium, participants moved to the field for a live demonstration. There, SORA Technology’s AI-powered drone technology demonstrated its ability to map and treat potential malaria hotspots with surgical accuracy.
The workshop concluded as a landmark moment for regional unity. By bridging the gap between sophisticated AI and boots-on-the-ground health workers, the event accelerated the adoption of data-driven solutions in the collective mission to make Africa malaria-free.
