Some leaders make history with loud speeches. Others leave behind a legacy that speaks for itself. Dr. Hilla Limann was one of them. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡

Born in the historic town of Gwollu in Ghana's Upper West Region, Dr. Hilla Limann's journey from a small community to the highest office in the land is a story of determination, education, and service. His academic excellence took him to the London School of Economics and the University of Paris, where he earned a PhD in Political Science and Constitutional Law.

On 24 September 1979, he was sworn in as the first democratically elected President of Ghana's Third Republic, leading the People's National Party (PNP). He inherited a nation emerging from years of political uncertainty, yet remained committed to rebuilding Ghana through peace, democracy, and development.

During his administration, funding was secured to complete the Kpong Dam, while efforts were revived to continue work on the Bui Damβ€”projects that contributed to strengthening Ghana's electricity supply. His government also sought to improve transportation by introducing Tata buses and contracting STX of North Korea to build cargo ships for the Black Star Line. In Northern Ghana, irrigation initiatives helped increase rice production and supported agricultural growth.

His presidency lasted just over two years before it was brought to an abrupt end by the military coup of 31 December 1981, led by Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings.

Though his time in office was short, many remember Dr. Limann as a calm, humble, and principled leader who believed in democratic governance and national progress. His legacy continues to inspire conversations about leadership, integrity, and public service.

Dr. Hilla Limann passed away on 23 January 1998 and was laid to rest in his hometown of Gwollu, where his tomb now serves as a place of remembrance for many visitors who wish to honour one of Ghana's former presidents.

Speaker of Parliament Praises UBIDS’ Resilience at 2nd Congregation and donates law books.

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has commended the University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS) for its remarkable resilience and growth, describing the institution as "a tremendous blessing" to the Upper West Region and Ghana.

Delivering the keynote address at the 2nd Congregation of the School of Law and Special Graduation of the School of Graduate Studies on July 4, 2026, Speaker Bagbin recalled his long-standing association with the university, from its difficult beginnings to its emergence as a competitive academic force. He notably arrived with law books as a personal gift to the Faculty, promising further discussions with the Governing Council on additional support.

The Speaker used the occasion to update graduands on the passage of the Legal Education Reform Act, 2026 (Act 1170), which breaks the monopoly of the Ghana School of Law and allows accredited universities to mount a one-year Bar Practice Program. He threw his weight behind UBIDS becoming one of the five accredited institutions, declaring, "I cast my vote for UBIDS. It is, after all, the premier Law School in the North."

On infrastructure, Speaker Bagbin acknowledged the university's challenges, including inadequate teaching facilities and accommodation, but assured the community that government efforts to complete stalled projects would change the face of the campus within two years.

In a stirring conclusion, Speaker Bagbin encouraged graduands to embrace discipline, resilience, and ethical leadership, urging them to use their knowledge for community and national development.

He also revealed ongoing efforts to establish a Medical School at UBIDS, including a partnership with the Medical University of Ajman in the UAE and the installation of six new dialysis machines at the Upper West Regional Hospital. "Tough times do not last. Tough institutio
