Kaya ChildCare Every year, thousands of women and young girls migrate from Ghana's poorer north to the major cities of the south in search of a better life.

Kaya ChildCare is a social enterprise aimed at reducing the health and security risks faced by babies and infants of Kayayoo in markets in Accra; we do this by providing access to quality Early Childhood education for the infants. Due to a shortage of employment and their very limited skills, these female migrants work as head porters (known as kayayoo), spending their days carrying heavy loads for travellers and shoppers to earn an income. These girls, as young as 16years old have babies and infants who get caught in the harsh conditions out in the open markets where their mothers live and work. They live their first 3 to 5 years of life either strapped on the backs of their mothers, or left outside on a cardboard box all day with little to no attention while their mothers work for their livelihood. In Ghana, several initiatives have focused on addressing the plight of the kayayoo mother, but none have addressed the effects of this social phenomenon on the most vulnerable child. The difference between a street child and the Kayayoo’s child is the presence of the mother. In setting up Kaya ChildCare, we are augmenting the efforts of the hardworking kayayoo mother in providing for their child’s development in those critically formative years, to change their default end from being life on the street. We are adopting learning-through-play in our local context; creating toys from local recyclable materials; working with volunteers; and other child-focused expert organizations to ensure an optimum early childhood development for the Kayayoo’s child. We equip them to get into the mainstream educational system with funding support up to grade 6.

What does it take to strengthen childcare beyond the classroom? Sometimes, it starts with equipping the people who make it possible.

August at Kaya Childcare Centre was about equippping our caregivers and content box creators with practical skills to strengthen the work they do and, ultimately, improve the care and support they provide to children.

A key highlight was our First Aid and Safeguarding training, where participants learned how to respond to emergencies, recognise potential risks and play a more active role in creating safer environments for children.

For us, supporting children goes beyond providing play-based learning materials; It also means investing in the people who care for them and ensuring they have the skills and confidence to respond when it matters.

Lots of learning, questions, notes, and a few photo-worthy moments too!!!

We were delighted to take part in the 3rd Annual Women Changemakers for Education Conference, bringing together women who are shaping conversations and driving change across the education space.

For KCC, one of the highlights was being invited to showcase our work and share more about what we’re doing to support children, caregivers and early learning environments.

Beyond the showcase, the conference gave us the chance to listen, learn and connect with other women doing meaningful work in education, each bringing different experiences, ideas and perspectives to the table.

We’re thankful for the opportunity to share our work and be part of a space that celebrates women who are contributing to a stronger future for education.

We’re still here, providing safe spaces where children from marginalised communities can learn, create, play, explore and grow. 🧩📚

A few moments from around KCC: little smiles, new things learned, plenty of play and, of course, a little bit of classroom chaos.

Here’s a little dump from Week 1 of the new term 💚

Most people see a kiosk.

AT KCC, we see something much bigger.

A child exploring, playing, and developing essential early learning skills.

A mother able to work peacefully, knowing her child is safe.

A young woman earning an income by providng babysitting services.

A community proving that quality childcare doesn’t always require a large building, just the right idea.

This is what inclusive early childhood development means to us.

10 years down the line, and we’re sending a new set of little ones out of the nest, a little taller, a little louder, and a lot more ready for the world ahead. 🎓

Join Kaya ChildCare for our 7th Graduation Ceremony, as we celebrate the journey of learning, play, curiosity, and growth.

As we celebrate this milestone, you can also be part of their next chapter by donating to our Primary Start Fund to support graduating children with tuition and essential learning resources as they transition into primary school.

Every child deserves a strong start, and every ending is really just the beginning of something even bigger. ✨🤍

The best solutions are built with communities, not just for them. ✨🤍

This past week the Content Box project team at KCC engaged with mothers and the Madina Market community to discuss the model and gather their ideas and feedback, ensuring that it reflects the realities of the families it is designed to serve.

Follow, share, and support as we expand quality childcare to underserved communities. 🤝🏾
