Distance Isn’t a Barrier: The Story of a Determined Student ( in school uniform) at Manhyia M/A JHS
During AidingHands’ recent visit to Manhyia M/A JHS in Wenchi, we met a student whose story reminded us what resilience really looks like.
Every school day, she wakes up early and walks for approximately 2 hours to get to school. No bus. No ride. Just determination and her school bag.
When we asked her if the long walk ever makes her want to give up, her answer was simple and powerful: “Distance isn’t a barrier to my education.”
For her, school is more than classrooms and books. It’s opportunity. It’s a chance to learn, to grow, and to build a future different from the struggles she sees around her. The hour-long walk, she said, is just part of the journey — not the reason to stop.
Her mindset reflects what AidingHands believes: that ordinary young people can take action and become part of the solution for their own lives. Even with challenges like distance, lack of materials, and limited resources, students like her show up. They choose learning.
At AidingHands, our mission is to empower youth through education, health, and leadership. Stories like hers push us to do more — to support students with learning materials, mentorship, and advocacy so that no child has to choose between access and ambition.
Because when a student is willing to walk an hour for education, the least we can do is meet her halfway.
