Technology is increasingly transforming how local communities protect forests, and the results are tangible.
Between January –March, 2026, community monitors across 5 forest in the Region of Ghana used the Forest Watcher mobile application to identify and verify 36 alerts in near real-time.

Through field verification, monitors detected multiple cases of illegal mining and illegal timber harvesting within forest reserves, particularly in Krokosue forest landscapes. These findings were documented and reported to relevant authorities, including the Forestry Commission, for further action.
This initiative demonstrates how combining satellite-based forest monitoring (GLAD alerts) with community knowledge can significantly improve the accuracy, timeliness, and accountability of forest governance systems.

We are encouraged by how accessible and user-friendly the Forest Watcher tool has become, enabling communities to take a leading role in protecting their natural resources.
We acknowledge the World Resources Institute and Global Forest Watch for their continued support in equipping local actors with innovative tools that drive real impact on the ground.

The Resource Foundation Ghana recently conducted a community sensitization meeting in Subri im the Western North Region, Ghana to raise awareness on laws, , and community roles in protecting forest resources.

The session brought together community members and traditional leaders and led to the formation of a (SRA) committee, strengthening local participation in forest governance and benefit-sharing processes.

A key highlight from the engagement was a reflection from the Queen Mother of Subri, who noted that limited awareness of benefits had previously affected community involvement in forest protection. Following the sensitization, participants demonstrated improved understanding and renewed commitment to safeguarding their forest resources.

We acknowledge the support of Global Forest Watch (GFW) and the World Resources Institute (WRI) in advancing community-based forest monitoring and governance initiatives in Ghana.

🇬🇭 Happy Independence Day, Ghana!

As we celebrate our nation’s freedom today, let us also remember that true independence means protecting the natural resources that sustain our future.

Illegal mining continues to destroy our forests, pollute our rivers, and threaten the livelihoods of our communities. On this Independence Day, let us renew our collective responsibility to safeguard our environment and promote sustainable practices that protect Ghana for future generations.

Together, let us defend our land, our forests, and our water.
🇬🇭 Freedom and Justice.

Over the past weeks, The Resource Foundation Ghana , with funding support from the High Commission of Canada to Ghana, Togo and Sierra Leone , convened multi-stakeholder dialogue sessions in Juaboso District and Aowin Municipality to address and youth . The engagements brought together 150 stakeholders from five District Assemblies and Municipalities, including traditional authorities and representatives from public institutions, alongside youth leaders, women representatives, and media practitioners.
Validated findings from 10 project communities revealed significant environmental degradation, youth economic vulnerability, and enforcement coordination gaps.
Through structured thematic discussions, stakeholders developed a joint action framework aligned with district mandates and national priorities.
The dialogue strengthened institutional accountability by providing a formal platform for duty bearers to respond to validated community evidence. It reinforced policy alignment between traditional authorities and statutory institutions, while advancing regional coordination momentum across participating districts. This engagement marks a transition from sensitisation to structured implementation planning, contributing to stronger local governance systems and youth-centred prevention strategies.
We appreciate the continued support of the
in strengthening community resilience and multi-sector collaboration.

The Resource Foundation Ghana

The Resource Foundation is Ghanaian Non-Governmental Organization operating in the Western North Region of Ghana. We seek to promote sustainable livelihoods to deprived rural communities within a sustainable development change framework. The Resource Foundation (TRF) supports rural communities in Sustainable Natural Resources Management, Agriculture and Food Security,Democracy and Governance, Youth and Women Empowerment , Education and Public Heath, water, sanitation and hygiene promotion.

This is to help in the sustainable management of our resources, participation and inclusion in local governance to promote socio-economic development. We have had series of programs that aimed at bringing communities closer to the protection and governance of forest and water bodies, and those seeking to bridge gaps in community and local development, promote sanitation. We encourage communities to take action to minimize the adverse environmental impacts of their activities and to take advantage of opportunities for environmental improvement.

TRF works with government, community groups, CSO/NGO and others to ensure that best practices are followed in the use of resources. We do not impose solutions but work with communities to strengthen their own efforts, making the most of their knowledge and experience.
