For decades, our economy has followed one direction ; extract, produce, throw away.
The circular economy challenges that entirely. Instead of waste being the inevitable end of every product, materials are kept in use. Resources are given a new purpose. And nature is given the space to heal and regenerate.
Three principles sit at its core, designing out waste and pollution from the start, keeping products and materials circulating at their highest possible value, and actively restoring the natural systems we depend on. Applied together, they offer a credible pathway out of the climate, biodiversity, and pollution crises we are facing, without relying on the myth of infinite resources on a finite planet.
And here in Ghana, the foundations already exist. The woman collecting plastic bottles for recyclers. The carpenter repurposing old wood. The community composter turning food scraps into soil fertiliser. The young entrepreneur converting waste into products. Guinness Malt changing their bottles from a darker colour to a plain one, making it possible to be recycled. These are not just good habits, they are circular economy principles in action.
At RUG, building this kind of economy is not just something we talk about , it is what we show up every day to make real.
