This is not a distant environmental problem. This is happening right here in our capital city. A lagoon that once fed families, supported fishing communities, and formed a natural part of Accra's ecosystem has been slowly destroyed by decades of plastic waste, industrial discharge, and solid waste that flows through our drainage systems every single day.
The Korle Lagoon did not pollute itself. We did, through careless waste disposal, blocked drains, and a culture that has for too long treated our water bodies as dumping grounds.
But it is not too late. Every piece of waste properly disposed of, every gutter kept clear, and every community that takes ownership of its environment is a step toward giving the Korle Lagoon, and Ghana's water bodies, a fighting chance.

At RUG, we do not see waste as a problem, we see it as raw material. We see it as opportunity. We see it as the foundation of the next generation of green businesses that Ghana desperately needs.

This is not an attack, it is a fact. NADMO estimates that human activities account for nearly 50% of flooding in Accra, and at the heart of that is one habit we have normalised for far too long: dumping waste into our drains, gutters, and open spaces.
The flooding that destroys property, displaces families, and claims lives every rainy season is not simply a natural disaster. It is a management disaster, and it is one we have the power to prevent.
Stop dumping in drains. Dispose of waste responsibly. Separate your plastic from your general waste. Keep your surroundings clean. These are not big asks, they are the minimum we owe each other and the city we call home.

Not everything that looks green actually is.
We have all heard it, "just use paper bags, they are better for the environment." But science tells a different story. Producing a paper bag generates 4 times more carbon emissions than producing a plastic bag, and most paper bags are used just as briefly before being discarded.
This is not a defence of plastic bags. It is a call for smarter thinking. The most sustainable bag is not made of paper or plastic, it is the one you already own, carry everywhere, and use hundreds of times over. A Bolga basket. A cloth tote. A canvas bag. A fabric you already have at home.
True sustainability is not about swapping one single-use item for another. It is about breaking the single-use habit entirely.

A child who learns to recycle today will never litter tomorrow.
The cleanest generation Ghana has ever seen does not start in a government policy or a corporate sustainability programme, it starts at home, with you, right now.
Children do not inherit our values automatically, they learn them by watching us, doing alongside us, and being celebrated when they get it right. Set up a recycling bin at home. Show them which waste goes where. Turn it into a game. Make it a moment. Because the habits formed in childhood are the ones that last a lifetime, and the children sorting waste in your home today are the adults who will either protect or destroy Ghana's environment tomorrow.
The next generation of sustainability champions is not waiting to be born. They are already in your home, your classroom, and your community, waiting to be taught.

Many of us believe that once plastic burns to ash, the problem is gone. But the truth is, it transforms into deadly chemicals that poison our air, water, food, and bodies.
Ghana generates over 1.1 million tonnes of plastic waste every year, with only 2–10% recycled. The rest ends up in open fires, landfills, and waterways.
We cannot burn our way out of this crisis.

Did you know? Ghana receives an average of 5 to 6 hours of peak sunshine daily, enough to power an entire household through solar energy, yet most Ghanaian homes still rely entirely on the national grid.
Think about that. The sun shows up every single day, free, powerful, and reliable, and we are barely using it. While we complain about dumsor, rising electricity bills, and an overstretched national grid, the solution is literally shining above our heads every morning.
Solar energy in Ghana is no longer just for big companies and expensive buildings. Small solar panels, solar lanterns, and solar water heaters are becoming increasingly affordable and accessible to everyday Ghanaian households and businesses.
The sun is Ghana's most abundant and most underutilised natural resource. It is time we started treating it that way.
