Family First - Ghana

Family First - Ghana Family First is a non profit, NGO located in Kumasi, Ghana, West Africa. Family First is dedicated to the special and medical needs community of Ghana.

Family First - Ghana was established in 2016 working in the Kumasi Metropolis area. Based on our experience and previous work in Ghana, we saw the impact stigma had made on families of children with special needs. Family First -Ghana partners with the local health care providers to empower vulnerable families of children with complex medical and developmental needs in Ghana. Family First provides

otherwise unavailable support and resources through sponsorship, education, and prevention to keep families together. How it Works:
1. Intervention – when a family is first referred to our program, a social worker will determine what immediate needs should be met through financial sponsorship. We hope to create a safe and loving environment for the family as they work through their designated classes. Sponsorship may include medical, education, housing, nutritional support until a family graduates from Family First – Ghana.
2. Foundation – We believe a family cannot thrive without a solid foundation of emotional support. Family First offers counseling and support groups. We hope to connect families all over Kumasi with similar circumstances to better support one another.
3. Prevention – In order to prevent families from feeling desperate enough to relinquish their child to an orphanage we have created classes to help empower families so they can become independent. We offer business, finance management, literacy, parenting and skill training classes.
4. Education – The stigma of both developmental and medical special needs often isolates families in Ghana. We hope to eradicate that stigma by offering training, conferences, Q+A panels to local healthcare providers, schools and churches. By partnering with leaders in the community we dream to see a Kumasi that strives for inclusiveness in every part of life.

💛 A very special milestone for Tina

After four years in Italy receiving specialist medical care, we are absolutely delighted to share that Tina has undergone surgery to reduce the size of her facial plexiform tumour and it went incredibly well! ✨

Tina is recovering brilliantly and has already noticed improvements in the vision in her right eye, as well as a lot less pain and discomfort. We are incredibly proud of the courage, resilience, and positivity Tina has shown throughout this journey.

A heartfelt thank you to Tina’s sponsors and the many wonderful individuals and organisations who have helped make this life-changing treatment possible.

🍽️💛 Before the new tables and chairs make their way into the classroom, the students are making the most of them with a shared lunch outside!

As more families enrol their children with special educational needs, Agape Love Inclusive School is continuing to grow. These new tables and chairs will provide a comfortable and supportive learning environment, ensuring even more children can access the inclusive education they deserve.

We're so encouraged to see this community embracing inclusion and opening its doors to more children. Every new table represents another opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive. 🌟

💛 The power of early interventions 💛
Early intervention can make a life-changing difference in a child’s development. Through consistent physiotherapy, nutrition support, and speech and language therapy, Abdul Hamid has made remarkable progress in both his physical development and communication skills.

He is now independent in his movement, increasingly confident, and sociable in both the classroom and playground. While he continues to benefit from tailored learning support to help him with reading, writing, and social understanding, his progress shows what is possible when children receive the right support at the right time.

Abdul Hamid’s journey highlights how early, joined-up intervention between family, school, and therapists can unlock potential and support children to thrive. 💛

✨ Standing tall! ✨ Pearl has been working incredibly hard in physiotherapy to build her strength, balance, and confidence.
For children with cerebral palsy, standing can require a huge amount of effort and determination. Through regular physiotherapy, Pearl is developing the muscles that support her posture and mobility, and she has made fantastic progress in standing with limited support.
Every small step builds towards greater independence, and we couldn't be prouder of her. 💛

🎥 Watch Pearl practising her standing skills during physiotherapy.
