Five years. One species. What does that actually look like on the ground?
Since 2021, our programme (Ecology and Conservation of Threatened and Endangered Species) has been conducting one of the most detailed single-species conservation studies in Ghana.

What We Documented on Vepris heterophylla:
- Spatial Distribution: Precise mapping across the Shai Hills Resource Reserve.
- Community Ecology: The specific plant community structure and species associations it relies on.
- Phenology Tracking: Seasonal flowering and fruiting cycles monitored continuously over five full years.
- Demographics & Recruitment: Patterns of seedling establishment, survival, and understory dynamics.
- Germination Biology: The exact environmental conditions required to break dormancy and trigger germination.
We took this research a step further by moving from observation to active restoration: successfully growing 500 seedlings in the first conservation nursery effort for this species anywhere in Ghana.
Translating Local Fieldwork to Global Impact
- Local Publication: A peer-reviewed manuscript on the population dynamics and conservation ecology of V. heterophylla is currently in preparation.
- Global Science: Plant functional trait data gathered from Ghana's Coastal Savanna has contributed to a global consortium manuscript, "The Rules of Leaf-Stem Coordination Across the World's Plants," currently submitted for publication.
Ghana's Coastal Savanna is actively feeding global ecological science. The work does not wait for journals to move on to the next phase! 🌿

𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬: Full alignment with IFC - International Finance Corporation Performance Standards, The World Bank Group Environmental and Social Framework (ESF), and African Development Bank Group Integrated Safeguards System (ISS).

𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝: We are leading the ESIA for a major reforestation initiative across three Ghanaian forest reserves: North Formangso, Kwekaru, and Gyade-Bepo, which is just one of several active assignments underway.

🌿 Meet Zelda Gadegbeku

As part of our 𝐄𝐂𝐎𝐓𝐄𝐒 Project, we are proud to highlight Zelda Gadegbeku, a Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi student, whom we supported in conducting her research in 2023.

Her research focused on the Natural Regeneration of 𝘝𝘦𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘴 𝘩𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘭𝘭𝘢, an endangered plant species, at Shai Hills Resource Reserve.

🌱 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬
The study recorded 245 seedlings across four sites:
- Hiewayo: 107 seedlings
- Manya: 93 seedlings
- Sayu: 45 seedlings
- Mogo Hills: 0 seedlings

𝐇𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞:
Seedling counts decreased near footpaths and heavy rock outcrops. Conversely, rock-free areas with higher soil moisture and nutrient levels supported much greater seedling abundance.

🌍 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭
These findings show that saving 𝘝𝘦𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘴 𝘩𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘭𝘭𝘢 requires targeted action: restricting footpath disturbance near active regeneration zones, protecting high-moisture soil microhabitats, and tracking seedling survival over time.

𝐄𝐂𝐎𝐓𝐄𝐒, we believe that empowering early-career researchers to produce local scientific evidence is essential to building lasting conservation solutions for Ghana's biodiversity.

Ghana’s Hidden Gem: The Afia Birago Puddle Frog 🇬🇭🐸
Found in Ghana’s forest swamps, this tiny frog is a recent discovery but it is already Critically Endangered. From the Atewa Range to Jukwa, habitat loss from mining is putting its future at risk.
