๐ŸŒฟ Meet Zelda Gadegbeku

As part of our ๐„๐‚๐Ž๐“๐„๐’ Project, we are proud to highlight Zelda Gadegbeku, a Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi student, whom we supported in conducting her research in 2023.

Her research focused on the Natural Regeneration of ๐˜๐˜ฆ๐˜ฑ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ด ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฉ๐˜บ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ข, an endangered plant species, at Shai Hills Resource Reserve.

๐ŸŒฑ ๐Š๐ž๐ฒ ๐…๐ข๐ง๐๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฌ
The study recorded 245 seedlings across four sites:
- Hiewayo: 107 seedlings
- Manya: 93 seedlings
- Sayu: 45 seedlings
- Mogo Hills: 0 seedlings

๐‡๐š๐›๐ข๐ญ๐š๐ญ ๐ˆ๐ง๐Ÿ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ž:
Seedling counts decreased near footpaths and heavy rock outcrops. Conversely, rock-free areas with higher soil moisture and nutrient levels supported much greater seedling abundance.

These findings show that saving ๐˜๐˜ฆ๐˜ฑ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ด ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฉ๐˜บ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ข requires targeted action: restricting footpath disturbance near active regeneration zones, protecting high-moisture soil microhabitats, and tracking seedling survival over time.

๐„๐‚๐Ž๐“๐„๐’, we believe that empowering early-career researchers to produce local scientific evidence is essential to building lasting conservation solutions for Ghana's biodiversity.
