๐ฟ Meet Zelda Gadegbeku
As part of our ๐๐๐๐๐๐ Project, we are proud to highlight Zelda Gadegbeku, a Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi student, whom we supported in conducting her research in 2023.
Her research focused on the Natural Regeneration of ๐๐ฆ๐ฑ๐ณ๐ช๐ด ๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ต๐ฆ๐ณ๐ฐ๐ฑ๐ฉ๐บ๐ญ๐ญ๐ข, an endangered plant species, at Shai Hills Resource Reserve.

The study recorded 245 seedlings across four sites:
- Hiewayo: 107 seedlings
- Manya: 93 seedlings
- Sayu: 45 seedlings
- Mogo Hills: 0 seedlings
๐๐๐๐ข๐ญ๐๐ญ ๐๐ง๐๐ฅ๐ฎ๐๐ง๐๐:
Seedling counts decreased near footpaths and heavy rock outcrops. Conversely, rock-free areas with higher soil moisture and nutrient levels supported much greater seedling abundance.

These findings show that saving ๐๐ฆ๐ฑ๐ณ๐ช๐ด ๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ต๐ฆ๐ณ๐ฐ๐ฑ๐ฉ๐บ๐ญ๐ญ๐ข requires targeted action: restricting footpath disturbance near active regeneration zones, protecting high-moisture soil microhabitats, and tracking seedling survival over time.
๐๐๐๐๐๐, we believe that empowering early-career researchers to produce local scientific evidence is essential to building lasting conservation solutions for Ghana's biodiversity.
