YES! We have our very first Schwarzman Scholar.

Today, we are incredibly proud to celebrate our very own Akorfa Dagadu, YAF Ghana Class of 2022 and current senior at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), who has been named a Schwarzman Scholar and will join the Class of 2026–27.

This year, just 150 scholars were selected from a record-breaking pool of over 5,800 applicants across 40 countries and 83 universities, the most competitive cohort in the program’s 11-year history.

Schwarzman Scholars pursue a fully funded, one-year Master’s degree in Global Affairs at Schwarzman College at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. The program focuses on leadership, global affairs, and China’s evolving role in the world, building a powerful network of leaders committed to shaping the future.

And today, one of those leaders is from Ghana.

Akorfa’s journey, from to and now to , is a testament to courage, brilliance, and purpose. It is a story not just of personal excellence but of deep commitment to transforming systems that many have long ignored.

As a scholar, Akorfa stood out not only for her academic strength but for her relentless drive to solve real problems. Within the corridors of our program, she founded Ishara, an innovative venture reimagining recycling in Ghana by connecting informal waste pickers to transparent and efficient systems designed to scale across emerging markets.

We watched her nurture that vision.
We watched her refine it at MIT.
We watched her turn conviction into action.

Now she dreams even bigger, to establish a materials innovation hub in Africa that addresses the end-of-life of materials, from plastics to e-waste, reshaping how our continent thinks about sustainability and circularity.

This moment means more than an award.
It means representation.
It means possibility.
It means that a young girl from Agbogbloshie can stand on the world’s biggest stages and be recognized among the most promising global leaders of her generation.

Akorfa, you carry Ghana with grace.
You carry YAF Ghana with honor.
And you carry the hopes of many young people who now see what is possible.

Congratulations, Schwarzman Scholar. The world is waiting. 🌍🔥

As the year comes to a close, we want to pause and celebrate one of the most meaningful moments of 2025 for our community.

This Thanksgiving weekend, we brought together 90 of our alumni, board members, and friends for YAF Ghana’s maiden Reunion & Thanksgiving Celebration. It was a powerful weekend filled with joy, laughter, reflection, learning, and deeply meaningful conversations. For many of us, it was the first time putting faces to stories shaped over years of mentorship, sacrifice, and shared purpose.

We are profoundly grateful to our Board Member, Dr. Joshua Boger, for generously hosting us and creating a space that embodied everything YAF Ghana stands for: community, excellence, and service. Our sincere thanks also go to David and Lisa Tuttle, David and Jen Barnard, Jennifer Oldham, and our incredible leaders whose continued belief and support make this work possible year after year.

A very special thank you to the YAF Ghana Alumni Leadership Team and the Reunion Planning Committee. Your energy, leadership, and attention to detail turned this vision into a truly unforgettable experience.

This weekend reminded us that YAF Ghana is more than a program. It is a family, a growing global network, and a lifelong commitment to lifting others as we rise.

Watch out for Part 2😎💪🏾

Meet Cletus: From a Small Farm in Bazua to the #1 Liberal Arts College in America!

When we first met Cletus Abumah, he introduced himself like this:

“I’m the second child of the third wife of my father’s four wives.”

It was bold. It was honest. It was unforgettable.
And it perfectly captures the strength and complexity of his journey.

Raised in , a rural village in Ghana’s Upper East Region, Cletus grew up in a community with high illiteracy and few educational resources. One of 16 siblings and step-siblings, he spent his days helping on the family’s maize and millet farm, yet never stopped dreaming beyond the boundaries of his village.

But here’s what makes his story extraordinary:
He didn’t just dream. He took action.

Cletus became one of the top students in his school. He competed in the National Science & Maths Quiz, representing St. Charles Minor Seminary/SHS,Tamale.

Then, he applied to and was selected as one of just 25 scholars nationwide.

In , we saw him come alive. He traded farming tools for test prep books, village silence for climate debates, and isolation for a community of young thinkers who shared his drive and curiosity.

Today, we are beyond proud to announce that Cletus has been admitted to Williams College, the number one liberal arts college in the , on a full four-year scholarship worth $375,600.00.

“My admission to Williams is not just a personal achievement. It is a responsibility I carry for my village. I want to use my education to uplift others like me.” – Cletus

Cletus is proof that brilliance lives everywhere, even in the most overlooked corners of the world. All it takes is a chance.

At YAF Ghana, we are working to create more chances for students like Cletus and for the generations behind him.

This is what happens when determination meets opportunity.

Go Yafalians!
