During the 81st UN General Assembly in New York, the President of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, delivered a speech in which he emphasised the importance of languages and how they collectively reflect our national identity.
He said:
โI grew up at the crossroads of several Ghanaian cultures.
I speak Gonja, a Guan language.
I speak Akan and Ga.

I understand some Ewe.
And I speak English.โ
The Presidentโs reference to Hausa at such a significant international platform is therefore a notable recognition of the languageโs place within Ghanaโs multicultural and multilingual identity.
