Volunteering for Change: Community Empowerment through Literacy Project (Phase Two)

On 29th January, we concluded our workshop at the Islamic Education Unit, Kumasi with an important session involving parents.

Parents were trained on how to support their children by giving them the right attention and creating safe learning environments at home.

We also had an orientation led by a representative from STAR-Ghana Foundation on the GoGiveTime platform, which will help track and monitor volunteer activities in the field.

The session included valuable contributions from stakeholders, and parents shared concerns and suggestions to improve education outcomes.

Thank you STAR-Ghana Foundation for the continued partnership and support.

On Friday, 9th January, our team held a stakeholder engagement meeting with the CEO of SAR Consult and Proprietor of SAR Educational Complex (Mr. Abubakar Siddiq )as part of the Community Empowerment Through Literacy Project (Phase 2) under the Volunteering for Change initiative.

The engagement provided an opportunity to share outcomes from Phase 1 and present the vision for Phase 2, which is being implemented in partnership with Star Ghana Foundation and FOMWAG

A key takeaway from the discussion was the recognition that low academic performance—particularly challenges with reading—cannot be attributed to one group alone. Parents, teachers, school leadership, education authorities, government, and students all play critical roles. Addressing literacy challenges therefore requires a holistic, multi-stakeholder approach—from the grassroots to policy level.

The stakeholder further emphasized the need to:
✔️ Engage parents, teachers, and education authorities separately to identify gaps and strengths
✔️ Address literacy challenges in Islamic schools within the Asokore MANPONG Municipal Assembly
✔️ Instill a strong reading culture among young learners as a foundation for academic growth

We are grateful for the insightful recommendations shared, which will guide the effective implementation of Phase 2 as we work collectively to empower young people through literacy.

📌 Together, we can build a strong foundation for learning and lifelong success.

we also engaged the Director of the Islamic Education Unit in a purposeful discussion aimed at strengthening collaboration between civic initiatives and faith-based educational institutions.

The meeting highlighted the importance of integrating civic awareness, leadership development, and community values within Islamic education. We shared how the Volunteering for Change Project seeks to support young people through inclusive and values-driven engagement.

We are grateful for the Director’s insights and encouragement, which reaffirm the vital role faith-based education plays in shaping responsible and engaged citizens.

We look forward to continued collaboration for the development of our youth and communities.

📍 Stakeholder Engagement | Local Governance & Development

As part of our ongoing stakeholder engagements, we had the privilege of meeting with the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly.

The engagement focused on introducing the Volunteering for Change Project, sharing our objectives, and discussing the role of local government in promoting youth participation in governance and community development.

We are encouraged by the MCE’s support, guidance, and willingness to collaborate in advancing initiatives that empower young people and strengthen civic responsibility at the municipal level.

We remain committed to working closely with the Assembly to ensure sustainable impact.

We appreciate the Headmaster’s openness, insights, and commitment to supporting initiatives that equip students with leadership skills, civic awareness, and a strong sense of responsibility.
