Inception Meeting on Implementation Programme of National Standards for Poultry Production in Ghana
On Thursday, 21st May 2026, the Animal Welfare League met with the Veterinary Services Directorate, Ghana for the Inception Meeting on the Implementation Programme of National Standards for Poultry Production in Ghana.
The national poultry standards were developed by the in collaboration with the Animal Welfare League and the National Technical Committee for Agriculture, with support from the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, the Veterinary Services Directorate, researchers from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi and the University of Ghana, the Ghana National Association of Poultry Farmers, and other key stakeholders. The farm animal welfare standards - Minimum Requirements for Poultry Production (GS 1404:2026) sets out the minimum animal welfare requirements for poultry production across commercial, research, and educational settings, alongside an inspection manual (GS IM 20:2026) that defines a standardised method for assessment.
The implementation programme seeks to practicalise these standards in order to reduce the suffering of farm animals, especially poultry, at the production level while improving productivity within the industry in Ghana.
The Animal Welfare League team, led by the Executive Director, Dr. Daniel Abiliba, in the inception meeting of the implementation programme formally presented the two documents — GS 1404:2026 and GS IM 20:2026 — to the Veterinary Services Directorate, Ghana.
Our sincere gratitude to the Veterinary Services Directorate for hosting the meeting and for the warm welcome. We look forward to advancing the implementation programme together.
