On August 5, 2026, we had the honour of being invited by the Association of Catholic Heads of Higher Institutions (ACHHI) to present our Technology-Integrated Mathematics Education (TiME) initiative at its conference held at St. Augustineโs College, Cape Coast.
The conference was held under the theme:
โAcademic Excellence and Integral Human Development: The Mission of the Catholic Leader in Schools.โ
Representing Global CalMathics Institute for Inclusive Education and Technology, our Executive Director, Akpa Michael, shared practical approaches to integrating readily available technologies into Mathematics teaching and learning, with particular attention to the scientific calculator.
Our message was simple: technology integration does not always have to begin with expensive or complex systems.
While computers, robotics and other advanced technologies have enormous educational value, they often depend on infrastructure such as reliable internet access, laboratories and adequate technical support. These requirements can create greater challenges for schools in underserved communities.
The scientific calculator, however, is already within reach of many students and schools. With the right guidance, it can become more than an examination toolโit can support problem-solving, exploration and deeper understanding of Mathematics.
Drawing from our experience in teacher capacity building, we highlighted the continued concerns raised in WAEC Chief Examinersโ Reports about studentsโ weaknesses in scientific calculator use. We also encouraged school leaders to develop systems that help teachers and students see the calculator as a learning tool rather than a shortcut or a device for weak students.
A key part of the discussion was the need to align technology with our curriculum. Scientific calculators are designed for use across different countries and educational systems. Without proper guidance on which functions are relevant to our curriculum, many of their useful capabilities may remain underutilized.
This is one of the ideas behind CalMathics: Calculator Mathematicsโhelping students and teachers connect the capabilities of the scientific calculator to Mathematics topics in a structured, curriculum-focused way.
We are grateful to the leadership of ACHHI for the invitation and for creating a platform for meaningful conversations on improving Mathematics education.
