*The Woes of an Eco Warrior*
For the past few years, I have dedicated myself to educating people and advocating for the protection of our environment. Along the way, I have had friends—educated friends—tell me that I am wasting my time and that I should find something “better” to do with my time and resources.
My response has always been the same: Nature may take time to respond, but when she does, the consequences can be devastating.
When the recent floods hit Accra, one of those friends called me and said, “Saa wo Saturdays for Sustainability project no ɛkɔɔ sii sɛn?”—meaning, “So what became of your Saturdays for Sustainability project?”
My answer was simple: It did not receive the support of the communities it was meant to serve, so it eventually collapsed.
But the truth is, the project may have ended, yet the problem has only grown bigger.
Friends, we cannot sit back and watch pollution, environmental degradation, and irresponsible practices destroy our communities. The time to act is now.
Sustainability cannot be a one-person mission. It must become a collective responsibility. Every individual, every community, every institution, and every leader has a role to play.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the President addressed the nation weekly with updates because the situation was considered a national emergency. Today, our environment deserves the same level of attention. We should demand weekly updates on the state of our environment because we are facing an environmental emergency.
If we keep talking about the change we want, we will begin to see it. But if we talk and act, we will not only see the change—we will experience it.
*The environment is speaking. The question is: are we listening?*
