DAFI and MASTERCARD Scholars Promote Literacy in Western Ghana

On September 11, 2024, the refugee camps of Krisan and Ampain witnessed a remarkable gathering of individuals united by a shared commitment to education. The World Literacy Day event, a beacon of hope amidst challenging circumstances, aimed to empower refugees with the invaluable gift of knowledge.

The program kicked off with a powerful message from DAFI program manager Madam Catherine Lawluvy, who emphasized the transformative power of literacy. The subsequent presentations shed light on the urgent need for improved academic performance and highlighted the crucial role of leadership and community involvement in fostering a supportive learning environment.

The Mastercard scholarship scholars, took center stage, offering a lifeline to aspiring students. Kangah Emmanuella and Konan Grace Divine Adjoua provided invaluable guidance on how to apply and access this life-changing opportunity. The introduction of English language classes and the donation of 156 books initiated by the DAFI scholars together with Alumni to the camp library further enriched the educational resources available to refugees.

A highlight of the event was the interactive mentoring session, where students were paired with experienced scholars from both DAFI and MASTERCARD scholarship. This one-on-one interaction provided invaluable guidance, motivation, and encouragement to pursue their academic goals.

The success of the program was a testament to the consistent support of the community. Local leaders, community members and volunteers played a pivotal role in creating a conducive environment for learning and growth. Their dedication and commitment were instrumental in inspiring refugees to embrace education as a pathway to a brighter future.

The World Literacy Day event in Krisan and Ampain was more than just a gathering, It was a catalyst for change. By empowering refugees with the tools of literacy and education, the program created hope, fostered resilience, and paved the way for a more promising tomorrow.
