Day 2 — Ideation, Co-Design & Tool Definition

Building on a strong evidence base, Day 2 of the ACTIVATE Workshop focused on transforming insights into actionable ideas. From engaging in dynamic ideation and co-design sessions to generating and refining concepts into clearly defined tools designed to address real-world challenges.
The session highlighted:

• Creative ideation using “How Might We” approaches
• Converging ideas into focused, practical tool concepts
• Defining purpose, audience, and evidence linkages
• Integrating GESI principles into design and user experience

The teams came together through collaborative design and cross-team exchange. Then the ideas evolved into structured solutions, ready for prototyping and further development. We can't wait to see what comes up in Day 3!

Do you see anyone you know? Tag them! 😁

As the ACTIVATE Workshop progresses, Day 3 focused on translating ideas into action through an intensive prototyping sprint.

Building on earlier problem framing and design work, the country teams transformed their concepts into tangible prototypes, ranging from wireframes to early-stage tools, grounded in evidence and tailored to real-world decision-making needs.

The session highlighted:
• The shift from abstract ideas to practical, testable solutions
• Iterative design through continuous feedback and peer learning
• The importance of usability, clarity, and accessibility in tool development
• Embedding inclusive design principles throughout the prototyping process

The hands-on collaboration and rapid iteration, concept refinement, and iterations of how these tools can effectively support locally led adaptation and climate action.

Day 1 — Evidence Foundations & Problem Framing
The ACTIVATE Workshop opened with a strong focus on grounding solutions in evidence and shared understanding.
Bringing together diverse teams across six country contexts, the day explored key project concepts spanning urban heat, biodiversity, mental health, and environmental degradation; while embedding gender, equity, and social inclusion (GESI) at the core of the process.
The session highlighted:
• Evidence-based insights across multiple climate and development themes
• The importance of shared language and inclusive approaches through GESI
• Cross-country learning through interactive evidence exchanges
• Defining clear, context-specific problem statements to guide solution design
Through collaborative discussions and structured reflection, participants identified critical decision gaps and refined the problems their tools aim to address.
Laying the foundation for solutions that are both relevant and impactful.

Over the week, the team led by Dr. Ansah, had a strategic and forward-looking conversation with Mr. , Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, exploring pathways and opportunities to strengthen youth-led and locally led climate action in Ghana.

For young people driving real, community-based climate solutions across the country, several systemic gaps remain, from institutional visibility to access to decision-making spaces. That is why this engagement is so important.

We discussed capacitation for the Division and District Chief Executives (DCEs), as well as practical pathways to:

✅ Facilitating youth climate leadership in national discourse, visibility and institutional linkages for young innovators and community climate actors.

✅ The district-level climate mainstreaming gap and how policy integration and local knowledge to action can be facilitated

✅ Strengthen entry points for emerging policy leaders, negotiators, and activists to engage in global processes including the Rio Convention landscape;

We look forward to the tangible uptakes from this strategic meeting, as this signals a major step toward ensuring that Ghana’s climate transition is youth-driven, community-rooted, technically informed, and institutionally supported.

This year, AYNF fellows were trained, experienced the COP simulations, built capacity and community!

Fellows are active and engaging with the actual COP process! The AYNF Secretariat (GAYO/CDKN in partnership with EPA) have rolled out a plan to make sure that no one misses out!

From virtual - following sessions and on-ground coordination, to a dedicated press conference, a Youth Statement, and post-COP debriefing, fellows will be learning, influencing, and sharing in real time. We’d also have COP watch parties at a central location (TBC) so fellows and interested persons from the general public can follow key moments together, network, and build a stronger community of youth climate negotiators!

We know you’ve been waiting!!

It’s Day 2 already! at the African Youth Negotiators Fellowship (AYNF) and the foundations have been laid!

We started with Climate Physical Science, unpacking the basics of climate change, from greenhouse gas effects and global warming to the specific impacts on West Africa and Ghana. Next, we explored the Intergovernmental Climate Change Process (COP/CMP/CMA), looking at the role of annual climate conferences, the stages of negotiations, and the institutions behind key treaties.

In the afternoon, we turned to The UNFCCC and its Treaties, examining the Convention, Kyoto Protocol, and Paris Agreement, alongside systems for tracking commitments and the role of Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE). A practical highlight was navigating the UNFCCC website to access and interpret key documents.

One of the key sessions was when we openly shared our fears around climate negotiations creating a safe space for fellows to express vulnerabilities, work through them, and build the confidence needed to step onto the global stage.

The journey continues!

Do you want me to mirror this same style for Day 2, so both updates feel consistent on LinkedIn?

Last year was a masterpiece! And this year, a major thrill! We are again, excited to co-organise the African Youth Negotiators Fellowship (Cohort 4) with our longstanding partner GAYO, and strategic partner - the EPA. From 5,000+ applications across Africa, we’re welcoming 78 enthusiastic fellows (in-person and remote) to Kpong, Ghana (28 Sept – 4 Oct 2025) for deep-dive training in climate diplomacy, finance, Article 6, governance, MEL/MRV, leadership, and knowledge brokering. This year’s training programme is intentional about centering GESI, diversity, accessibility, dignity, and safety throughout the sessions.

This will be a week of skill-building, peer exchange, and action-ready outcomes that travel from training room to negotiating rooms.

Congratulations to this year’s cohort! See anyone you know? Tag them!

The Ghana team is in Nairobi for the LLA Conference with CDKN, and today marked Day One.

We kicked off with a World Café session where we explored what really defines LLA, the questions that continue to challenge us, the actions we’re already taking, and the nuanced dichotomy between LLA and locally led implementation—along with the successes we’ve seen and the barriers we face.

In the afternoon, we visited the Mui Irrigation Weir in Mwala Subcounty, Machakos County to see firsthand how, at the county level, climate finance opportunities are being leveraged to improve water availability for irrigation, and in turn strengthen agriculture and food systems in the area.

We look forward to the days ahead—deepening the conversations, sharing experiences, and strengthening the case for locally led solutions. 🌍✨

Reflections from the KECTIL Youth Leadership Conference

What an inspiring journey it has been!

The panel session with , and explored the opportunity gap for young leaders. Spanning why even the greatest ideas often struggle without funding, mentorship, or networks. Discussions on the role of gatekeepers and the myths around access challenged us to rethink how opportunities are distributed amongst youth leaders and how they can navigate these barriers with resilience.

Insights on unlocking funding, tailoring proposals to funders’ priorities, and diversifying resources gave participants tools to sustain their initiatives beyond a single cycle.
Equally powerful were the conversations on mentorship and networks: how to find mentors who align with your mission, build mutually beneficial relationships, and show up in the right spaces. Collaboration also emerged as a recurring theme, showing us that collective strength often opens doors that remain closed to individuals.

Perhaps the most impactful takeaway was the focus on action steps, encouraging young leaders to create personal resource maps, set clear goals for expanding their reach, and commit to paying it forward by becoming connectors for others.

Congratulations to the selected fellows of this cohort! Swipe through, engage, and tag your tribe!

From Evidence to Action: Designing Impactful Narratives.

Day 2 was all about co-creation. With story angles identified, our 7 thematic teams, comprising of researchers and journalists got into work mode to turn the existing research into compelling, media stories.

The morning began with a recap and reflection session, setting the tone for focused collaboration. Whilst worked intensively to refine 9 evidence-based story ideas, draft formats for radio, TV, print, and digital, and begin shaping storylines and visuals, each group presented their initial outputs for peer review and facilitator feedback, which was a critical step to building audience-relevant content rooted in science.

With formats ranging from documentaries to radio soundbites, the outputs are paving the way for powerful, policy-aligned narratives that resonate with everyday Ghanaians, bridging research, storytelling, and impact.

See anyone you know? Tag or mention them 😎.

Let’s go!!!
