Reimagining Partnerships for Democratic Consolidation and Inclusive Development: Reflections on the 2026 Ghana Civil Society Forum.
Alive Today is proud to announce that our organization was officially represented by our Founder and CEO, Miss Lewu Sandra Teko, at the Ghana Civil Society Forum (GCSF 2026) held from June 25th–26th, 2026, at the University of Ghana’s CEDI Conference Hall.
Convened under the timely theme, "Reimagining Partnerships for Democratic Consolidation and Inclusive Development," this prestigious two-day forum brought together hundreds of stakeholders. The gathering represented a diverse tapestry of society, including leaders from civil society organizations (CSOs), government bodies, development partners, academia, the private sector, the media, faith-based organizations, traditional institutions, and vibrant youth groups.
Collectively, we assembled with a shared mandate: to explore innovative pathways for democratic resilience and to co-create a blueprint for inclusive national development.
Day One: Political Will, Institutional Strengthening, and the Funding Crisis.
The opening day established a high-level dialogue on the structural challenges facing Ghanaian democracy and civic space. The forum was distinguished by the presence of the Special Guest of Honour, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, who actively joined conversations focused on strengthening democratic governance.
A central pillar of the day’s deliberations centered on the stark reality of declining international donor funding, a shift that requires a complete re-evaluation of how civil society operates.
President Mahama and panel experts outlined the necessity of transitioning toward a new "development compact." This framework emphasizes that true democratic consolidation cannot rely on external aid cycles; rather, it demands a drastic increase in domestic resource mobilization, the strengthening of sovereign state institutions, and absolute accountability. The discussions challenged CSOs to move away from a transactional, donor-dependent mindset and move toward deep-rooted partnerships with local communities, ensuring that ordinary citizens are active participants in governance rather than passive beneficiaries.
Day Two: The Future of Civic Action and Technical Capacity.
Building on the strategic foundations of the first day, Day Two shifted focus toward the practical future of civic action. Participants engaged in rigorous examinations of how citizens, grassroots institutions, and cross-sector alliances can collaborate to safeguard civic spaces and advance accountability.
To equip organizations for this changing landscape, the afternoon featured targeted, practical masterclasses designed to build institutional resilience:
Tech & Security: Masterclasses in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity provided tools to optimize advocacy while securing digital civic spaces against emerging vulnerabilities.
Sustainability & Growth: Sessions on proposal development, non-profit compliance, and local resource mobilization addressed the operational bottlenecks that frequently hinder local organizations.
These masterclasses collectively advanced the global "Shift the Power" movement, empowering local CSOs to meet stringent international compliance standards while actively unlocking indigenous African philanthropy and grassroots crowdfunding models.
The forum came to a close with the GCSF Annual Meeting, a vital governance mechanism where internal working groups formulated concrete policy recommendations to directly shape the next chapter of the forum, including the continued push for the passage of a balanced Non-Profit Organisations (NPO) Bill.
GCSF 2026 reinforced a vital truth: our future cannot be built on the unpredictability of external aid. It was a definitive call to shift our perspective from donor dependency to local sovereignty.
For Alive Today, GCSF 2026 is a powerful reminder that we don't operate in a vacuum. True democratic consolidation and development start from the ground up. This forum marks a pivotal moment where we actively join the collective push to 'Shift the Power.' For our team, this means moving beyond a transactional mindset and ensuring that the communities we serve are not just beneficiaries, but the co-designers of our shared future.
