The team have had a great day today learning how to build compost toilets. They visited the toilets built by Dream Big Ghana in Akplortokor school, learned about how to maintain the toilets and to use the compost produced from them on the farm, creating a fully sustainable cycle. The toilets are clean and odour free and have facilities to dispose of menstruation products - allowing girls to use them all year round instead of missing school for a few days every month.

Project Manager, Alhassan Abubakar, was joined by Mason, Richmond Dana, and three teachers from the Abunyanya school compound, Mary Niyagner, Beatrice Angmor & Meshach Gyamesi, who will be responsible for educating the students and staff on how to use and maintain the new compost toilets we will now build at their school.

Huge thanks to Dream Big Ghana NGO for such a great day, we’ll take the lessons we have learnt all the way back up to Abunyanya and beyond.

We are thrilled to announce that we have been successful in our application to the Australian High Commission, Ghana. Through their Direct Aid Program they are helping Community Action Ghana to provide clean water and sanitation facilities for 846 students and 46 staff in Abunyanyana school compound. The compound houses four schools and there are currently no useable sanitation facilities and little access to drinking water. As a result, students and staff are forced to defecate in the bushes, which poses serious health risks including the spread of diarrhoeal diseases, typhoid, lethal snake bites and creates unsafe conditions, and absenteeism, especially for girls. Horrifyingly there were 62 cases of snake bites in the community in the past two years resulting in 41 deaths – just because there is nowhere safe to go to the toilet. We are delighted to receive this grant to make a real difference to the children and teachers in Abunyanyana.

We’re heartbroken to share the news that Fiator Yawo Kitsi, Clemence Kitsi, our dear friend and Community Action Ghana’s Project Manager has passed away. Our deepest condolences to his wife Patience, his children; Joel, Adrian & Jessica, and all of his friends and family in Ghana and beyond. The world has lost an amazing man and we have lost a friend. May he rest in peace and may his memory live on in his children and the communities he served.
