Making her own choice - The Young Urban Women's Project

Action Aid Ghana, an affiliate of Action Aid International is an NGO that aims at ending poverty together with all. At the center of its work is gender equality and the women's right issues. In reaching one of our major goals which is to ensure that women and girls can break the cycle of poverty and violence, build economic alternatives and

claim control over their bodies the Young Urban Women's Project (YUWP) which targets young women between age 15 to 25 years is underway in Accra and Tamale the project which has the aim of reaching 2000 young urban women living in poverty enabling them to live in dignity through economic independence and great control over their bodies. Another goal is to make sure that the voice of these young women are heard and recognized both locally and internationally. At the end of the project we expect that:

1. Young women will have safe and decent work and livelihoods and they can also exercise greater control over their income.

2. Young women's informed choices about their sexual and reproductive health will be increasingly realized.

3.Young women in project areas will be empowered and supported by allies and responsible stakeholders to effect change in their lives, their families, communities and various levels of governance. The project is being sponsored by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad)
In Accra, the Ark foundation Ghana in partnership with Action Aid Ghana are implementing the project. The Northern Sector Action on Awareness Centre (NORSAAC) are also implementing the project in partnership with Action Aid in Tamale.

As part of our May Day activities, the Young Urban Women’s Movement paid a courtesy visit to the Minister for Labor, Jobs and Employment, Hon. Dr. Abdul -Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, on 29th April 2026 to engage on the status and progress of Ghana’s ratification of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention 190.

The discussion highlighted the urgent need to promote safe, inclusive, and violence-free workplaces, particularly for women and young people.

The engagement also underscored the importance of fast-tracking the ratification of ILO Convention 190 to strengthen protections against violence and harassment in the world of work.

The Honorable Minister warmly welcomed the engagement and assured us that the Ministry would expedite work on the reports already submitted, with the expectation of providing positive feedback on the ratification process by the end of the third quarter of this year.

We remain hopeful and committed to advocating for safer, more dignified, and equitable working environments for all.

A month later, and the impact still speaks 💫
From the heart of our community durbars, these moments capture the strength, unity, and brilliance of young women showing up, standing tall, and uplifting one another.

The empowerment doesn’t end in March. It lives in our everyday conversations, our shared spaces, and the way we continue to rise together.

Here’s to community, culture, and the unstoppable power of women 🤍

As young women committed to community impact, we stepped out not just to clean our environment, but to raise awareness about the growing climate and waste management challenges affecting our communities ♻️🌍

It’s International Women’s Day, let’s remember real progress happens when we lift each other up.

Mentor a woman.
Support a woman-owned business.
Open doors for the next woman coming up.
Because when we give opportunities, support, and knowledge , we all gain.

Day 4 of the Global Tax Justice Advocacy Week

For 16 days, we stood together to speak out, learn, and take action against gender-based violence. These moments reflect voices raised, stories shared, and a collective commitment to build safer, more just communities for everyone.

Activism doesn’t end with these 16 days. It continues in our daily choices, our conversations, and our courage to challenge violence wherever it exists. Together, we keep pushing for change.

The Young Urban Women Movement (YUWM) in the upper East Region, with support from ActionAid Ghana, marked the climax of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence with a symbolic route march through Bolgatanga. Carrying loads on our heads, we made visible the burdens women bear daily from unpaid care work and economic inequality to gender-based violence, digital abuse, and discrimination. We ended the march with a media engagement, presenting these burdens to the world and demanding a future free from cyberbullying, digital violence, and all forms of GBV. Together, we rise for a safer, fairer world for every woman and girl.
