Dream Africa commends the Director of CID of the Ghana Police Service, (COP) Lydia Yaako Donkor for the bold and timely decision to launch a nationwide campaign against child sexual abuse.

This initiative comes at a critical time, as many girls in remote communities across Ghana continue to face alarming levels of sexual violence and exploitation. Every child has the fundamental right to safety, protection, dignity, education, and a life free from abuse. It is therefore important that Ghana’s Children’s Act is fully enforced to safeguard the welfare and future of every child.

Dream Africa Volunteer Service is proud to support the Ghana Police Service in this important campaign within the Volta Region. Through awareness creation, community engagement, and advocacy, we remain committed to protecting children and promoting their rights.

Protecting children is a shared responsibility. Together, we can create safer communities for every child in Ghana.

Dream Africa is strengthening community efforts to challenge harmful social norms and practices that contribute to School-Related Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) in the Adaklu District of the Volta Region.

Under the “Community Action Against Teenage Pregnancy and Intimate Partner Violence Project,” the organisation is establishing He-For-She Clubs in selected junior and senior high schools to engage boys and young men as advocates for gender equality, respect, and violence prevention.

The clubs will create safe spaces for discussions on healthy relationships, consent, positive masculinity, and the protection of women and girls. Through peer education, mentorship, debates, and awareness activities, students will be empowered to promote safer and more inclusive school communities.

Together, we can build a future where every girl is protected, respected, and empowered to reach her full potential.

We had the privilege of presenting Dream Africa’s gender-transformative approaches in SGBV programming during a training workshop organized by GIZ Ghana under the S(HE) – Support to Human Rights, Gender Equality and Civil Society Project.

It was a valuable opportunity to share our work, exchange ideas, and strengthen collective efforts toward preventing sexual and gender-based violence and promoting safer, more inclusive communities.

We sincerely appreciate GIZ Ghana for their continued support to Dream Africa and for creating platforms that advance meaningful change.

At about 12:32 pm, during a visit to fishing communities along the Volta Lake, I noticed several children gathered by the lakeside at a time when they should have been in school.

In speaking with them, a pattern began to emerge. Some said they had never been enrolled in school by their parents. Others explained that they had left on their own, drawn to the lake where their peers spend their days working and socialising. A number of the children also spoke about their experiences in school, describing environments they found unwelcoming. In particular, some mentioned harsh or discouraging language from teachers.

These accounts point to a broader concern. Beyond the issue of access, the quality of the school experience itself may be shaping children’s attitudes toward education. If the environment feels hostile or unsupportive, it is not surprising that some children disengage.

Access to education goes beyond enrollment figures. It depends on creating spaces where children feel safe, respected, and motivated to learn. Without such conditions, efforts to keep children in school may fall short, and more may drift toward labour along the lake.

Dream Africa strongly joins Plan International to condemn the reported recruitment of children by military forces in the conflict in .

The use of children in armed conflict is a grave violation of children’s rights. No child should ever be recruited, forced, or coerced to participate in war.

Children are victims of war, not instruments of it.

Community radio plays a powerful role in the fight against Sexual and Gender-Based violence, Child labour, and Trafficking in the Volta region of Ghana. In many communities, radio is the most trusted and accessible source of information, especially for people with limited literacy.

Through local language discussions, dramas, interviews, and call-in programmes, community radio raises awareness of what constitutes abuse and exploitation. It helps people understand their rights, challenge harmful cultural norms, and promote prevention. Radio also informs SGBV survivors and witnesses about where to seek help, including DOVVSU, the Social Welfare Department, and the Legal Aid Authority.

It is a driver of social change and protection. By strategically funding and partnering with community radio, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection can amplify prevention messages, challenge harmful norms, strengthen reporting systems, and bring protection services closer to rural communities.
