53,414 girls. WHY?

Between January and July 2026, up to 53,414 adolescent girls aged 10–19 were reportedly impregnated, according to the Ghana Health Service.

So, what are we missing?
Are we doing enough to ensure adolescents have the information, support and services they need to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health?

This figure should not just shock us it should make us ask harder questions and demand meaningful action.

What happens within a home does not stay without consequence. Gender-based violence can affect survivors’ safety, dignity, wellbeing and ability to fully participate in society.

Calling GBV a “family matter” can create silence where there should be protection and accountability. Families, communities and institutions all have a responsibility to challenge violence, support survivors and ensure that rights are respected.

GBV is never just a family matter. It is a rights issue that demands attention, action and accountability.

Adolescence comes with questions, choices, and decisions that can shape the future. Young people should not be left to depend on myths, misinformation, or whispers to find the answers.

They deserve accurate, age-appropriate, and trusted Reproductive Health Education (RHE) that helps them understand their bodies, recognize risks, know their rights, and make informed decisions.

When we give adolescents the right information, we give them the power to make informed choices.

Consent is not permanent. At any point, a person has the right to change their mind, pause, or stop sexual activity. Respecting that decision is fundamental to dignity, safety, and healthy relationships.

Real respect means listening, stopping, and respecting the choice.
