Ashesi has established a reputation as a leader in undergraduate education in Africa, with an educational experience that fosters ethical leadership, an entrepreneurial mindset and the ability to solve complex problems. Across various industries today, Ashesi graduates are highly sought, and work for progress in Africa. At the heart of the Ashesi experience is our liberal arts and sciences curricu

lum, and our campus culture. Ashesi students come from across Africa, live and innovate together on our beautiful campus in Berekuso; half our students receive scholarships, and half are women. On campus, these students join with faculty, staff, alumni and others to engage in discussion, civic action and connection with each other—under a shared mission to build a flourishing African continent.

Ashesi’s Global Giving Week is almost here—a moment for our community to come together and make an Ashesi education reachable to all.

From the beginning, Ashesi set out to build an education that prepares leaders to think deeply, act with integrity, and solve problems that matter for Africa. We also recognized that many students with the potential to lead and transform their communities face barriers to accessing that education. Building the curriculum was one step. Making it accessible was another.

Through scholarships, partnerships, and the generosity of a global community that believes in Africa’s future, Ashesi is working to ensure access regardless of financial background.

This year, we aim to inspire 500 donors to support scholarships. Join them. Make your early gift today.

When Barbara Debre ‘16 graduated from Ashesi, she carried the Ashesi community with her. Today, as Operations Manager at Music Nigeria and the company’s Ghana lead, she is helping open doors into the music industry for students who came after her.

Through the strength of her work and her engagement with the Career Services team, Virgin Music Nigeria has made its New Gen Internship Program available to Ashesi students. The 12-week placement gives students direct exposure to how the music business operates, from strategy and distribution to artist development and commercial partnerships. Read more:ashe.si/3NTpocW

After Ashesi, Jessica Sugru Ali built experience across HR, business support management, strategy, and talent development. Her roles at Bank of America in London and Morgan Stanley shaped her understanding of how organisations grow and how individuals thrive within them.

Today, she is applying that insight to expand access to opportunities for people in Ghana and beyond. As Founder and Lead Consultant at Graduate Consult, she partners with organisations to design structured pathways that connect early-career talent to the skills, systems, and networks needed to build meaningful careers.

On March 5, 2026, the Ashesi Community lost Johnson Pendaeli Maturo '27, a student of purpose whose presence was felt in and out of the classroom.

From teaching Physics in Tanzania to championing mental health through his work with MiNova Mental Health Clinic, the Wellness Within Hub, and as a Peer Counsellor at Ashesi, Maturo showed a deep commitment to supporting others. He guided peers through challenges, created space for honest conversations, and quietly worked to improve university life for those around him.

In celebration of his life, the community came together to reflect on his legacy and share tributes in his honor. Here is a recap of the event in photos: https://ashesi.edu.gh/ashesi-photos/in-photos-remembering-johnson-maturo-27/

Long before arriving on campus, many experience Ashesi through the images and videos that showcase its learning and impact. Behind many of these moments is Cyril Kuornoo ’21, usually behind the lens, quietly documenting our stories and rarely in the spotlight himself. Today, we turn the camera toward him.

What began as a simple phone recording during his first year at Ashesi sparked Kuornoo’s interest in visual storytelling and set him on a path to joining the Ashesi Communications team as a Multimedia Officer.

Over the past three years, his work has played a key role in shaping how the university is seen and understood. From supporting admissions campaigns that help prospective students and parents visualize life , to strengthening fundraising efforts by documenting the impact of scholarships, Kuornoo has brought community initiatives, academic work, and alumni stories to life.

What if the most powerful thing you could do for Africa was change how it educated its leaders?

Twenty-four years ago, Ashesi opened with that question. Since then, the University has pursued that question through its curriculum, its honor system, its campus community, and its growing network of partners across Africa. What began as a small university in Ghana has become part of a broader effort to rethink how higher education can shape Africa’s future. Here is a reflection on our journey since then: https://ashe.si/at24

A team of four Ashesi University students competed in the Global Sustainability Supply Chain Student Competition, placing first in the Africa–Middle East region and earning bronze overall. The team, Reseau Est, included Cartier Scholars Sandrine Uwase’27 and Prosperine Hollande Nduwayo’27, alongside Mastercard Foundation Scholars Eunice Sayubu’26 and Divine La Grace Igirubuntu’26. Focusing on Ethiopia, the team examined the everyday realities of rural farmers, including high post-harvest losses and unreliable connections to urban markets. These insights informed their response, a three-tier, interconnected system designed to move produce more efficiently from farm to market. Read more about their win: https://ashe.si/4rCrjRA

When Rayane Kameni, a final-year Mechanical Engineering student from CESI (École d'Ingénieurs), joined Ashesi as an exchange student, he became part of a research team tackling a critical challenge in Ghana: unpredictable rainfall and limited irrigation that threaten farmers' incomes and food security. Together with two Ashesi research interns, Kameni worked on "Synthesis and Characterization of Biodegradable Cassava-Based Hydrogels for Water Management in Irrigation." Using cassava, a widely cultivated and affordable crop, the team developed hydrogels that absorb and slowly release water, helping crops thrive during dry periods. On this International Mother Language Day, we are reminded that language is more than communication; it is identity, culture, and access.
Across the world, mother tongues connect us to our heritage, shape how we think, and enable full participation in society. Yet for many Deaf Ghanaians, their mother tongue, Ghanaian Sign Language (GhSL), remains unrecognised, limiting access to education, justice, healthcare, and the economy. Recognising GhSL is not just about language policy; it is about affirming the rights, dignity, and inclusion of an entire community.

In this piece, Nicholas Arthur-Baidoo Jnr, Elsie Edinam Avevor, Mustapha Bello, and Francis Essel, members of the Ashesi Accessibility Team, highlight GhSL as the mother tongue of over 110,000 Deaf Ghanaians and call for its official recognition. They argue that recognising GhSL is essential not only for education, justice, and healthcare but also for economic inclusion and social equity, enabling Deaf Ghanaians to participate fully in national life.
