When I heard the story of Helen Keller (a woman who overcame deafness and blindness to become a global advocate for people with disabilities https://www.britannica.com/biography/Helen-Keller.
I felt a deep pull to contribute to her foundation. I had the incredible opportunity to volunteer as an anaesthetist for a surgical outreach in a remote village in West Africa, supported by EYSDC and the foundation, which supplied all medications and inspired the local staff.
Over two weeks, we provided free surgeries for more than 120 patients, both children and adults, including hernia repairs, hysterectomies, myomectomies, and lipoma removals.
Being able to make such an impact far from home was one of the most fulfilling moments of my career.
In my next post, I will share how my interactions with the maternity staff inspired me to undertake a project that, after implementation, earned me the Best International Medical Volunteer 2024 award.
