🌱 WE ARE HIRING: PROJECT OFFICER – AGROECOLOGY PROJECT

Are you passionate about agroecology, sustainable agriculture, community development, and creating lasting impact?

We are looking for a dynamic and organised Project Officer to coordinate the implementation of an agroecology project delivered in collaboration with seven partner organisations.

🔹 Key Responsibilities

• Coordinate project activities among the seven partners
• Monitor project progress, deliverables, and timelines
• Participate in project meetings, trainings, and stakeholder engagements
• Conduct field monitoring and document project achievements and lessons
• Prepare and support the production of clear reports, briefs, and other written materials
• Maintain effective communication with partners and stakeholders
• Provide support and cover for other Project Officers when required

🔹 Who We’re Looking For

A proactive professional with:
✔️ A Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Agroecology, Development Studies, Environmental Studies, Project Management, or a related field
✔️ 2–3 years of relevant project experience
✔️ Strong coordination, communication, reporting, and organisational skills
✔️ Experience working with farmers, communities, NGOs, or development projects
✔️ A genuine interest in agroecology and sustainable food systems
✔️ Ability to work independently and travel to project locations

🌿 Turning local knowledge into practical solutions! 🌱

As part of our practical training, smallholder farmers are learning how to use locally available and indigenous materials to prepare natural solutions for pest and disease management.

Beyond the training, we are advocating for greater recognition and promotion of farmer knowledge, local resources and affordable agroecological alternatives that can reduce dependence on costly external inputs while protecting our soils, crops and environment.

Farmers have knowledge, communities have resources. Let’s invest in and promote the solutions already within our reach.

🌱 PROJECT SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCHED! 🌱

The Widows and Orphans Movement - WOM, together with its consortium partners, has officially launched the “Strengthening Agroecology for Resilient Livelihoods: Empowering Women and Smallholder Farmers in Northern Ghana” project.

The launch brought together MoFA, traditional authorities, smallholder farmers, women, youth, civil society organisations and other key stakeholders committed to building resilient and sustainable food systems.

The project will focus on strengthening agroecological practices to improve production and livelihoods, creating an enabling environment for policy influence, documenting farmers’ indigenous knowledge, and strengthening collaboration among stakeholders.

Together, we are working towards healthy soils, resilient farmers, sustainable food systems and stronger communities. 🌾🌍

Yesterday, once again, I had the absolute honour of meeting the 2nd Mayor of Kreuzwertheim, Germany, thanks to Paul e. V.

Paul e. V. has consistently supported WOM with flexible funding since 2001 and remains a great supporter of our work.

I had the opportunity to share WOM’s history, our current work, and our future plans.

In addition, I invited the Mayor and her team to visit the Upper East Region of Ghana in the near future to facilitate learning and knowledge exchange between the two towns, particularly in the area of decentralisation.

Looking forward to strengthening this partnership even further.

It was an Absolute honor to spend the week visiting the Burgerkomitee in Steinhagen, Germany to update the committee on WOM’s work and discuss future projects as the Executive Director of WOM.

This partnership started in 1998 and continues to grow stronger with renewed passion and commitment .

✊🏾 Agroecology in Action: Learning, Sharing and Building Food Sovereignty in Africa 🌍

Yesterday, we stepped into Ferme Sain in Benin for a powerful field experience to witness agroecology in practice.
What we saw was more than a farm. It was a living demonstration of what is possible when we work with nature rather than against it. 🌿
From zero-waste practices and composting to 🌳 diverse tree species, 🐟 fish farming, 🥥 charcoal production from coconut shells, 🥬 vegetable production, 🌾 rice farming, and the protection of different birds and animals, Ferme Sain showed us how different elements of an ecosystem can work together to create a sustainable and resilient food system.
This is the kind of agroecology that communities can build on: protecting biodiversity, restoring the soil, reducing waste, producing healthy food, and strengthening local livelihoods.

Today, we continue our journey at the Agroecology Village, where farmers, activists, organizations and movements from across Africa are coming together to learn, exchange experiences and strengthen the struggle for agroecological food systems. 🤝🏾🌍

These activities formed part of the 17th edition of the World Social Forum 2026 (Forum Social Mondial) taking place here in Cotonou, Benin.
🌱 Agroecology is not simply an agricultural technique. It is a movement for food sovereignty, environmental justice, biodiversity, community resilience and the right of people to control their land, water, seeds and food systems.
From the farm to the movement, we learn, we share, we organize, and we build alternatives together. ✊🏾🌍🌱

🌍 Journeying Together for Land, Water and Peasant Seeds

The Widows and Orphans Movement (WOM) is honoured to be participating in the 5th West African Caravan on Land, Water and Peasant Seeds, joining civil society organizations, farmers, women leaders, youth, and social movements from across West Africa to advocate for food sovereignty, agroecology, climate justice, and women's land rights.
Our journey began on 28th July as we departed Accra. Along the way, we made a meaningful stop at Agavedzi in the Keta South Municipality, where we stood in solidarity with families and communities affected by the devastating tidal waves. Witnessing their resilience reminded us that climate change is not a distant threat—it is a lived reality for many coastal communities, reinforcing the urgent need for climate justice and community resilience.
From Agavedzi, we continued into Togo, where the caravan strengthened regional solidarity and collective action. On 30th and 31st July, we participated in engaging discussions and learning sessions at the University of Lomé, exchanging ideas on land governance, agroecology, food sovereignty, and the rights of communities to protect their land, water, and peasant seeds.
On 1st August, we visited the House of Slaves (Maison des Esclaves) of Agbodrafo, a place of profound historical significance that stands as a powerful reminder of the transatlantic slave trade and the resilience of African people. The visit offered an opportunity to reflect on our shared history and reaffirm our commitment to dignity, justice, and the protection of the rights and resources of present and future generations.
As the caravan continues, WOM remains committed to amplifying the voices of women smallholder farmers and advocating for secure women's land rights, resilient livelihoods, and sustainable food systems across West Africa.
Together, we believe that when women have secure access to land, communities thrive, ecosystems are restored, and food systems become more resilient.
