🌍 Journeying Together for Land, Water and Peasant Seeds

The Widows and Orphans Movement (WOM) is honoured to be participating in the 5th West African Caravan on Land, Water and Peasant Seeds, joining civil society organizations, farmers, women leaders, youth, and social movements from across West Africa to advocate for food sovereignty, agroecology, climate justice, and women's land rights.
Our journey began on 28th July as we departed Accra. Along the way, we made a meaningful stop at Agavedzi in the Keta South Municipality, where we stood in solidarity with families and communities affected by the devastating tidal waves. Witnessing their resilience reminded us that climate change is not a distant threat—it is a lived reality for many coastal communities, reinforcing the urgent need for climate justice and community resilience.
From Agavedzi, we continued into Togo, where the caravan strengthened regional solidarity and collective action. On 30th and 31st July, we participated in engaging discussions and learning sessions at the University of Lomé, exchanging ideas on land governance, agroecology, food sovereignty, and the rights of communities to protect their land, water, and peasant seeds.
On 1st August, we visited the House of Slaves (Maison des Esclaves) of Agbodrafo, a place of profound historical significance that stands as a powerful reminder of the transatlantic slave trade and the resilience of African people. The visit offered an opportunity to reflect on our shared history and reaffirm our commitment to dignity, justice, and the protection of the rights and resources of present and future generations.
As the caravan continues, WOM remains committed to amplifying the voices of women smallholder farmers and advocating for secure women's land rights, resilient livelihoods, and sustainable food systems across West Africa.
Together, we believe that when women have secure access to land, communities thrive, ecosystems are restored, and food systems become more resilient.

Our hearts are with every family affected by yesterday’s devastating floods in Greater Accra.

We mourn with those who have lost loved ones, stand in solidarity with those who have lost their homes and belongings, and pray for everyone whose lives have been turned upside down by this tragedy.

Imagine this.

A widow loses access to the land she once farmed with her husband.

Planting season arrives.

Her children are hungry.

School fees are due.

She has seeds. She has farming tools. She has the skills to farm.

What she does not have is land.

A man offers her access to farmland.

But there is a condition.

Suddenly, what appears to be a choice is no longer a choice.

This International Widows Day, we invite Ghanaians to reflect on an uncomfortable reality:

Can consent truly be free when survival is part of the negotiation?

Too often, widows face economic pressures that make them vulnerable to exploitation. Hunger, poverty, dependence, and lack of access to productive resources can create situations where saying "no" comes at a devastating cost.

No woman should have to choose between feeding her children and protecting her dignity.

This year's International Widows Day theme is:

**Justice, Dignity and Economic Power for Widows**

Justice means protecting widows from exploitation.

Dignity means respecting their right to make decisions free from pressure and coercion.

Economic power means ensuring that widows have secure access to land, livelihoods, and opportunities.

When widows have economic power, they have real choices.

Join WOM in raising awareness about coercion, consent, and the importance of protecting widows' rights to land and livelihoods.

Today, on International Widows Day, we invite you to think about a difficult question.

If a widow has no land to farm...

If her children are hungry...

If school fees are due...

If the only opportunity to access land, food, income, or support comes with unwanted sexual demands...

Is that really a free choice?

Too often, discussions about consent focus only on physical force. Yet many women and widows face pressures that are less visible but equally powerful.

Poverty.
Hunger.
Dependence.
Fear of losing access to resources.

These realities can make saying "no" incredibly difficult.

This year's International Widows Day theme is **Justice, Dignity and Economic Power for Widows.**

Justice means protecting widows from exploitation.

Dignity means respecting their right to make decisions free from pressure and coercion.

Economic power means ensuring widows have secure access to land, livelihoods, and opportunities so that survival never becomes the price of consent.

At the Widows and Orphans Movement (WOM), we believe every widow deserves the freedom to live, work, and provide for her family without fear of exploitation.
