A FOUNDATION BUILT: 10 Communities, 5 Districts, 1 Movement

Over the past two weeks, we have taken you on a journey through the Upper East Region—from Ndanbong to Gongnia, from Zua to Wurunia, from Nayorigo to Nayagnia.

We have met communities that are struggling. Communities that are resilient. Communities that are ready to demand change.

We have heard their stories:

Women walking miles to fetch water

Children missing school because of sanitation-related illness

Farmers watching their crops fail because of unpredictable rainfall

Chiefs and elders asking, "How can we make our voices heard?"

We have also seen their strength:

80 champions selected across 8 communities

60%+ women representation in most communities

Youth stepping up to lead

Traditional leaders pledging their support

This is just the beginning. In the coming months, these champions will be trained, equipped, and deployed to generate evidence, engage duty bearers, and demand accountability.

The SIDA CLIMB Better WASH Partnership is not about building boreholes. It is about building power. The power of communities to speak for themselves. The power of evidence to drive change. The power of accountability to transform systems.

To all the communities we visited: Thank you. Your warmth, your honesty, and your commitment have inspired us. We are honored to walk this journey with you.

The foundation is built. Now the real work begins.

📍 COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: Wurunia, Kassena-Nankana West

Wurunia may be small, but its spirit is mighty.

Our engagement was delayed by unforeseen circumstances, but the divisional chiefs, elders, and opinion leaders waited. They understood that this conversation mattered.

"Climate change is not a distant problem," said one elder. "We are living it every day; our water sources are drying, our crops are failing, and our children are suffering. We welcome any effort to help us speak with one voice to those who can help."

Wurunia has selected 6 women out of 10 champions, 60% women representation. They are ready to lead, ready to advocate, and ready to demand accountability.

Wurunia, your voice will be heard.

📍 COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: Katiu, Kassena-Nankana West

At the Katiu Paramountcy Palace, tradition and change met in a powerful way.

As custom demands, water was offered to the visitors before the purpose of the visit was stated. Then the conversation began, a conversation about water, sanitation, climate change, and the future of Katiu.

The community asked tough questions:

"How will you ensure our safety during documentary production?" We explained our safeguarding and GESI principles.

"Do champions need to speak English?" We clarified that the initiative is not for elites but for committed individuals willing to serve their people, the community, and our society at large.

"How are WaterAid interventions distributed?" We acknowledged the resource constraints and encouraged the community to advocate for equity.

The Paramount Chief pledged the community's full support. Katiu is ready.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: Zorkor Awaa, Bongo District

In Zorkor Awaa, we met women who weave baskets and who are ready to weave a new future.

The meeting was held at the Zorkor Awaa Noyine Basket Weavers' Workshop, a space built by women, for women. And it was fitting that women led the conversation.

"We have seen many projects come and go," said one woman. "What we need is the ability to speak for ourselves and demand what is rightfully ours. This project seems to give us that power."

Zorkor Awaa has selected 7 women out of 10 champions 70% women representation. They have also selected 4 youth champions, recognising that young people must be at the forefront of climate action.

Zorkor Awaa, you are weaving more than baskets. You are weaving change.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: Nayorigo, Bongo District

Rain could not stop the people of Nayorigo!

Our engagement at Nayorigo Basic School was interrupted by rainfall—but the community stayed. They sought shelter, waited for the rain to pass, and continued the conversation. That is commitment.

A women's leader raised a concern: "Why are you focusing on young people as champions?" The community itself responded: "Young people are the future. If we empower them now, they will carry this work forward long after we are gone."

That is the wisdom of Nayorigo. Sustainability is not just a buzzword; it is a way of thinking.

We left Nayorigo with a promise: to work together, to amplify their voices, and to ensure that the next generation inherits a community that is resilient, empowered, and heard.

In Dasabliga, the Chief's Palace became a classroom for climate justice.

The Chief, Elders, Queen Mother, youth leaders, and women's group representatives gathered to learn about the SIDA CLIMB project and to ask important questions.

"Can this project help us with water for dry-season farming?" asked one elder. We explained that while SIDA CLIMB is not a service delivery project, it will empower the community to generate evidence and advocate for the support they need.

"How will you ensure the champion selection is fair?" asked another. We explained the criteria: responsive, willing, trusted, communicative, engaged, and committed. And we assured them that the process would be community-led and transparent.

The community pledged their support. They understand that change does not come from outside; it comes from within.

Dasabliga, your questions are valid. Your voice is powerful. And your future is in your hands.

Our engagement began at the Chief's Palace, where we were warmly received by traditional leaders. Water was offered a symbol of welcome and respect. Then we proceeded to the community, where over 40 residents gathered to learn about the SIDA CLIMB project.

The people of Zua have a simple request: "Help us generate evidence to advocate for water." They are not asking for handouts. They are asking for tools to speak for themselves.

That is exactly what SIDA CLIMB is about. We are not here to build boreholes. We are here to build voices. We are here to empower communities to identify their challenges, document their evidence, and engage duty bearers.
