HELP PROTECT NESTING SEA TURTLES
To everyone living, working, or staying along the eastern coast of Ghanaβs beachfront:
From 1 August to 31 March, the Keta Ramsar Centre NGO is appealing to all residents, beach operators, visitors, hotels, guesthouses, and beachfront property owners to help us protect nesting sea turtles and newly hatched turtles during the nesting season.
Our team monitors the beaches almost every morning, recording nesting sea turtles, turtle tracks, and nests. However, artificial light and human activities at night can seriously affect sea turtles.
π PLEASE KEEP OUR BEACHES DARK AFTER 9:00 PM
Sea turtles are highly sensitive to artificial light. Nesting females may be discouraged or disturbed by bright lights, while newly hatched turtles can become disoriented and move away from the sea, wasting the precious energy they need to reach the Gulf of Guinea and swim to safety.
To help:
π΄ Turn off all exterior lights facing the beach from 9:00 PM to 7:00 AM.
π΄ Close curtains, blinds, and shades to prevent indoor lights from illuminating the beach.
π΄ If you are on the beach at night, do not use white flashlights or mobile-phone flashlights. Use only wildlife-friendly red LED lights when absolutely necessary.
π΄ If you encounter a nesting female or hatchlings, do not use flash photography or shine white lights on them.
π’ IF YOU SEE DISORIENTED HATCHLINGS
If you observe hatchlings moving away from the sea or becoming disoriented at night, please do not chase, handle, or release them yourself.
Contact the Keta Ramsar Centre NGO immediately:

You can also send a message through our Keta Ramsar Centre page.
If you find disoriented hatchlings during daylight hours, do not release them into the sea during the day. Where it is safe to do so, place them gently in a clean container with moist sand, keep the container shaded, cool, and protected, and contact our team immediately for guidance.
π AFTER 9 PM, ITβS TURTLE TIME!
Letβs work together to keep our beaches as dark, quiet, and safe as possible so that:
π’ Nesting females can come ashore, lay their eggs, and safely return to the Gulf.
π’ Hatchlings can naturally find their way to the sea.
π’ Future generations can continue to experience these magnificent endangered marine animals.
Your small action can make a huge difference.
π Thank you for helping us protect Ghanaβs sea turtles and their nesting beaches.
