PREVENTION
City of Refuge Ministries is working to not only rescue children out of child slavery but also to prevent children from being sold. We are doing this by empowering single mothers who are vulnerable to selling their children. In 2010 we began to take steps to try to eliminate one very specific component from the cycle of child trafficking, vulnerable single moms living in both lake and c

oastal communities. Our belief is that if we can empower single mothers economically and educationally they will no longer be vulnerable to selling their children to Lake Volta’s fishermen. We are also working in several sending communities, communities that are vulnerable to selling their children, to provide education to the people about the issue of slavery and what is happening to the children once they are sent to work at the lake. INTERVENTION
As we work to prevent children from being sold through educating the communities who are vulnerable to selling their children we also educating the fishermen who are purchasing the children about why this practice is harmful to the children. We also go to the lake communities where the children are working long hours and spend time on the lake with them. We ask the children questions about what the events that lead up to them living at the lake. Through these initial conversations with the children we are able to track down the fishermen they work for and begin talks about the child’s release. Many times we will travel to the village where the children are coming from to talk to the relative who sold them. Our ultimate goal in this is to remove the children from the slavery that they are in and make sure they are returned to their family if possible or come to live with us at the CORM Children’s Village. City of Refuge Ministries never pays for the release of the children who we are negotiating for. All of our negotiations are done through relationship building and education. RESTORATION
At the City of Refuge Ministries Children's Village we make it our priority to provide each child an education, discipleship, medical treatment and love. We do this through our residential program and our school, Faith Roots International Academy.
