Holding the Cedi, Losing the Economy: A Costly Illusion
โ€Ž
โ€ŽThe NDC government, under President John Dramani Mahama, has reportedly injected close to $10 billion into the market in an attempt to prevent the United States dollar from appreciating further against the Ghana cedi. While this policy may appear, on the surface, to stabilize the currency, a deeper look reveals a troubling reality: this money has effectively created jobs in America, not in Ghana.
โ€ŽDespite this massive dollar injection, the government has not added a single meaningful job to the existing employment base in Ghana. Ironically, the much-publicized 24-hour economy programme, which is projected to create jobs and stimulate domestic productivity, requires only $4 billion to kick-start. Yet, the same government that can mobilize $10 billion to defend the cedi appears reluctant or unable to fund a programme that could directly improve the lives of Ghanaians.
โ€ŽThis contradiction exposes a fundamental policy failure.
โ€ŽGhana is currently importing far more than it exports under this administration. Every shipment of finished goods imported into the country represents not just foreign products on our shelves, but exported jobs and imported unemployment. Instead of investing in local manufacturing and value addition, we are deepening our dependency on foreign economies.
โ€ŽThe consequences are visible on the streets and in the markets. Today, tradersโ€™ shops are filled with goods, yet customers lack the purchasing power to buy them. The problem is no longer availability; it is affordability. The cedi may be โ€œdefendedโ€ on paper, but it is missing from peopleโ€™s pockets.
โ€ŽThe situation during the recent Christmas season is a painful example. Akatsi, a major business hub in the Volta Region, was unusually quiet. On 27th December, I personally went out to make purchases and was shocked by the level of inactivity. This is unacceptable for a town known for its vibrant commercial life, especially during the festive season. Traders are lamenting as goods sit on shelves day after day, edging closer to expiration due to low sales.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽThese are not abstract economic theories; they are lived realities.
โ€ŽThis raises a critical question: How long can Hon. Ato Forson continue to sustain this policy?
โ€Ž
โ€ŽWill the government continue to inject $10 billion repeatedly just to temporarily hold the cedi against the dollar?
โ€ŽEconomic history teaches us that such artificial support cannot last forever. The center cannot hold. Without addressing the structural weaknesses of the economy production, exports, jobs, and income growth currency stabilization becomes an expensive illusion.
โ€ŽFor now, many Ghanaians are watching quietly. But time has a way of exposing unsustainable policies. When the support runs out, the truth will surface.
โ€ŽLet us give it time and watch.

This NDC government seems to be taking Ghanaians for granted. During the budget presentation, the finance minister failed to mention the 20% increase for rural teachers, agenda 111, or the cocoa price, which was promised at 6500ghc.

What are the underlying principles and fiscal policies guiding this budget?

Removing 3 taxes and imposing 4 on us, Robbing Peter to pay Paul. Ghanaians are monitoring the situation closely.

A court in Kigali has charged reigning Miss Rwanda Divine Nshuti Muheto with driving under the influence of alcohol and without a license and damaging public infrastructure. Muheto, who gained fame in Rwanda after winning the national beauty contest in 2022, fled the accident scene and has found herself at the center of a storm. The prosecution has called for a one-year and eight-month jail term for the beauty queen, and the verdict is due on November 6. The competition, which catapulted the beauty queen to stardom, has not been held since - the government suspended it after serious allegations of sexual misconduct were made against the organizers. Is Rwanda a land of fear or safety?

This is a reminder to everyone of us of the urgent need to take care of our young ones. They are not just our future, but they also represent the most vulnerable members of society. Our responsibility is to protect them and, at the same time, prepare them to face the growing risks and uncertainties of our world.

There are two core areas we need to focus on: protecting children through safe schools and empowering them to be safe. When we address these two aspects, we are not only shielding them from harm but also equipping them with the knowledge and confidence to navigate the challenges they may face.

Schools are meant to be safe spaces, where children can learn, play, and grow without fear. But in too many places around the world, schools are vulnerable to disasters like floods, earthquakes, or storms. When disaster strikes, the safety of our children should never be left to chance.

We need to make sure that school buildings are strong and resilient, able to withstand the forces of nature. Itโ€™s not enough just to build schools, we must ensure theyโ€™re built to last. This means adhering to safety standards, enforcing building codes, and investing in the proper infrastructure.

But school safety goes beyond bricks and mortar. Itโ€™s about preparing for emergencies before they happen. Every school should have a clear disaster plan that includes evacuation drills and communication strategies. Teachers and staff need the right training so they can act quickly and confidently to protect their students.

Most importantly, we cannot forget that every child, no matter where they live, whether in a bustling city or a remote rural area, they deserves the same level of safety and protection. We must work to ensure that all schools, everywhere, are equipped to keep their students safe in times of crisis.

While it's our duty to protect children, we must also empower them to protect themselves. Education is a powerful tool for disaster risk reduction. When we teach children about the risks they may face, we give them the knowledge to act in ways that can save lives, their own, and those of others.

Integrating disaster preparedness into school curricula is essential. Children can learn about the environment, about hazards like floods or earthquakes, and what to do when these events happen. Education in disaster preparedness can start young ones through stories, games, and lessons that make it easy for them to understand and remember.

Children are not passive victims. They are smart, adaptable, and capable of being part of the solution. By equipping them with the skills to respond to disasters, we are helping them to build confidence and resilience. Imagine a generation of children who grow up knowing exactly what to do in a crisis, who can help their families and communities stay safe. Thatโ€™s the future we want to build.

๐—” ๐—–๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—”๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป
Ladies and gentlemen, we live in a world where disasters are becoming more frequent and severe, largely due to climate change. But we are not powerless. We have the tools to protect and prepare our children through stronger schools, better education, and community-wide efforts.

This 2024 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction calls on all of us, governments, schools, organizations, and individuals to step up our game. We need to invest in school safety and disaster risk education like never before. If we take these steps now, we can create a safer, more resilient world for our children.

Together, letโ€™s build a future where every child can learn in a safe environment, confident in their ability to face whatever challenges come their way. Letโ€™s protect and empower our children, because their safety is our responsibility and their future is in our hands.

Thank you.
