Before our most loved Prof. Elsie Kauffman there was Prof. Marian Ewurama Addy. She was the first quiz mistress of the National Science & Maths Quiz. Her role on the show turned her into a household TV star and a massive role model for young girls entering STEM fields.

‼️ She made history by becoming the first female full professor of natural science in Ghana and at the University of Ghana.

‼️In 1999, she became the first African woman to receive the prestigious UNESCO Kalinga Prize for the Popularization of Science, recognizing her effort to make science accessible to the general public.

‼️As a biochemist, her research focused on checking the safety and efficacy of traditional herbal remedies. Her work bridged indigenous knowledge with modern science, specifically proving the effectiveness of local plants used to treat asthma, allergies, and diabetes.

‼️Later in her career, she was named the first President of the newly established Anglican University College of Technology in 2008, cementing her legacy as a top leader in technical higher education.

‼️Marian Ewurama Addy was born 7 February 1942 at Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region of Ghana, to Samuel Joseph Cole and Angelina Kwofie Cole. She was educated at St Monica’s Secondary School in Mampong-Ashanti and the Holy Child Girls’ School in Cape Coast where she obtained her ‘O’ and ‘A’ level certificates.

‼️Marian Addy continued her education at the University of Ghana, where she studied and obtained a degree in Botany, and at the Pennsylvania State University for her masters and doctorate degrees in biochemistry.

‼️She passed away from natural causes at the age of 72 on January 14, 2014, at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra. To preserve her impact, the University of Ghana named a prominent science laboratory in her honor and established an annual memorial lecture series.

‼️The late Professor Marian Ewurama Addy was married to Ebenezer Charles Oko Addy. Ebenezer Charles Oko Addy is a sociologist and a former athlete who famously won a gold medal in the 4 x 100 meters relay race at the 1966 Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica. The couple was blessed with two daughters: Naa Lamiley Addy-Sadowsky and Lamiokor Esi Addy.

“The majority of my life has been dedicated to demystifying complex human rights law and removing the practical barriers that prevent the most marginalized, including children, from accessing justice. As a member of the ACERWC, I will leverage this insight to ensure the Charter's protection.”

With this commitment, I share my official candidacy portfolio and strategic vision for the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC) for the 2026–2031 term. My candidacy is rooted in the belief that we must bridge the gap between the Charter’s provisions and national-level results for every child.

As a legal scholar and human rights practitioner, my vision for the Committee focuses on three core pillars for impact:

🔹 Technical Guidance & Emerging Threats: Addressing modern challenges, including technology-facilitated violence, while championing the rights of the most vulnerable, including girls and children with disabilities.

🔹 Accountability & Accessibility: Fostering domestic compliance with the African Children’s Charter and addressing procedural barriers to ensure justice mechanisms are accessible for individual redress.

🔹 Cross-Continental Synergy: Deepening systematic collaboration between the ACERWC, other AU organs, and UN Treaty Bodies to maximize our collective impact.

I am committed to translating the African Children's Charter into effective national realities and look forward to a spirit of service and collaboration with Member States and relevant stakeholders.
