Efforts to tackle youth unemployment and strengthen livelihoods in Ghana’s Eastern Region are gaining momentum through the Youth in Entrepreneurship and Agribusiness Project (YEAP). The initiative is equipping young people with the skills, structures, and opportunities needed to succeed in agribusiness.

A key milestone is the formation of the Apese Youth Cooperative Maize Farming and Marketing Society under the Supresu Epicenter, reflecting YEAP’s goal of driving socio-economic empowerment by improving employment and incomes.

Through targeted training across 13 Farmer-Based Organizations (FBOs) in Abehenease, Darmang, and Supresu, participants gained practical knowledge in cooperative principles, governance, and group formation—strengthening their ability to access markets and negotiate better prices.

The initiative also promotes inclusive leadership, with strong female representation in key roles, reinforcing women’s role as drivers of community transformation.

As these cooperatives grow, they offer a promising pathway to reducing unemployment and building sustainable livelihoods across the region.

THP-Ghana is transforming how farmers across our partner communities grow, sell, and think about agriculture.

Food security goes beyond what's on the table today to building the systems that feed tomorrow.

Join us in growing a hunger-free future. 🌽

Salomey works as an Animator at the Subriso Awosoase Epicenter.

In the communities we partner with, Animators are the spark plugs for local action.

They bring community members together to take action and build a better future for themselves.

They also encourage and support people to lead their own activities in areas like health, education, nutrition, and women’s empowerment.

Their work helps people move from feeling “I can’t do this” to believing “I can do this.”

At The Hunger Project–Ghana, we recognize that protecting Adolescents requires not just good intentions but strong, informed law enforcement and civil service agencies that understand their role in safeguarding adolescents.

On April 23rd, The Hunger Project–Ghana convened partners from the Ghana Health Service, Ghana Education Service, CHRAJ, and DOVVSU in Koforidua for a capacity-building workshop under the Adolescent Health Project.

The workshop aimed to strengthen the capacity of these agencies to better understand, apply, and enforce laws and policies that protect adolescents’ rights, health, and well-being.

The Adolescent Health Project is being implemented by The Hunger Project–Ghana in collaboration with ora Kinderhilfe and funded by Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ)

9 Farmers ➡️ 800 Farmers.

In Asenema, farmers are being trained to train.

Agricultural Trainer of Trainers programs designed to equip farmers with the skills and knowledge to effectively train others are fostering a snowball effect for disseminating sustainable agricultural techniques.

Furthermore, farmers are being taught The Hunger Project’s “We Can” spirit through Vision, Commitment, Action workshops.

From learning about climate-smart agriculture, soil fertility and composting, to the safe use of agrochemicals and agribusiness skills such as record keeping and financial literacy, these nine trainers are set to cascade their knowledge to 800 more farmers.

What happens in the second decade of a person's life can have long lasting effects on their health, relationships and overall success.

Over a period of 24 months, the Hunger Project-Ghana in partnership with ora Kinderhilfe, will work with Adolescents in Ghana's Eastern Region on the Strong Adolescents Today, Strong Adults Tomorrow Project.

Through community education, advocacy, and the creation of spaces to provide sexual and reproductive health services, the project will improve adolescent health and well-being.

This project is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

This week, The Hunger Project-Ghana brought together Community Health Officers and Modified Tricycle Ambulance drivers from the Eastern Region and Volta Region for a 2 days hands-on capacity building exercise.

Together, National and Regional officers from the National Ambulance Service led the workshop participants in a hands-on capacity-building training.

The training equipped participants with knowledge, practical skills, and tools to effectively identify, assess, and respond to health emergencies. Participants learned how to:

✅ Operate Modified Motor Tricycle Ambulances (MMAs)
✅ Follow Dispatch Protocols and Referral Mapping
✅ Provide Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care
✅ Implement Helping Babies Breathe techniques
✅ Deliver Basic First Aid, Life Support, and Safe Patient Handling

What does a borehole mean for a community without running water? What does a washroom mean for a girl on her period? For the students at Osoroase A/C and Pechi M/A Schools, these are daily challenges they have faced.

Last week, The Hunger Project’s Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) team stepped in to support the establishment of new WASH facilities at both schools, with the goal of increasing access to potable water and sanitation facilities, which include:

💧 A borehole at Osoroase A/C School, providing clean water to the school and the surrounding community.
🚻 Washroom facilities at both Osoroase A/C and Pechi M/A Schools, ensuring students have access to clean and dignified sanitation.
🩸 Period changing rooms, allowing girls to manage their periods safely and comfortably.

These facilities will serve over 𝟓𝟎𝟎 students, including 𝟐𝟐𝟎 female students across both schools. Girls no longer need to walk long distances for water and can attend school knowing their health and hygiene needs are met.

𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐲? Imagine walking miles and miles 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐲 just to fetch a cup of clean water.

For millions of women and girls, 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲.

In communities without direct access to water, women are responsible for collecting water, managing it at home, and making sure their families have enough to drink, cook, and stay clean.

These daily journeys consume an estimated 250 million hours worldwide every single day.

Each day, girls tasked with collecting water must make an impossible choice: attend school or ensure their family has enough to drink.

The work is exhausting and dangerous. Women and girls face physical strain, injury, and the constant threat of attacks on lonely paths.

This World Water Day, let’s shine a light on the burden women carry and take action so that water flows safely, nearby, and reliably for everyone. 💧

🏍️ The Hunger Project–Ghana, with support from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has handed over 11 motorcycles to the Eastern Regional Health Directorate to strengthen maternal and child healthcare delivery across eight districts and municipalities in the Eastern Region.

Agatha Quayson, Country Leader of The Hunger Project–Ghana, noted that the motorcycles will empower health workers to conduct outreach services, visit pregnant women and newborns at home, support immunization campaigns, and respond more quickly to emergencies.

The handover follows THP-Ghana's earlier support of US$165,000 worth of medical supplies to health facilities this year.

At THP-Ghana, we are ensuring that no mother or child is left behind. 💚
