AfLIA MOURNS DR. VICTORIA OKOJIE
It is with deep sadness and a profound sense of loss that we announce the sudden passing of Dr Victoria Oare Okojie, a founding member of the African Library and Information Associations and Institutions (AfLIA).
Dr. Okojie, who was then, in 2013, the Chair of the IFLA Africa Section, played an instrumental role in the formation of AfLIA. She was a strong and passionate advocate for African libraries, championing the need for a united platform through which African libraries and library and information professionals could have a stronger voice in Africa’s development. Her distinguished contributions as a leader, administrator, teacher and scholar in the African library and information community inspired and mentored many young African librarians, several of whom have gone on to assume leadership positions across the continent.
The IFLA Africa Section confirmed the sad news on 14 September 2026. Her sudden departure has left AfLIA deeply shocked and saddened. We mourn the loss of a great soldier and a dedicated champion of the African library profession.
AfLIA extends its heartfelt condolences to her immediate family, the Nigerian Library Association, the FCT and Edo State Chapters of the NLA, her colleagues and friends, and the entire African library community.
May God grant her soul eternal rest and comfort the bereaved family and all of us and give us the strength to bear this irreplaceable loss.
We mourn deeply. We remember her service. We celebrate her legacy.
