🌴 From Keta to Elmina, our coastal communities are stepping up for climate action! 🌊
Over the past few weeks, the Kasa Initiative Ghana team under the IMPLACOST project has been on the ground in Keta, Anloga, Ada, Winneba and Elmina, bringing together farmers, fisherfolk, chiefs, assembly officials and women's groups for community awareness workshops on coastal conservation.
We talked mangroves 🌱, coastal erosion, sustainable fishing, and how communities can adapt to a changing climate — all while learning from the people who know these coastlines best.
184 stakeholders joined us across the five locations, and the conversations are just getting started. Protecting Ghana's coast takes all of us — thank you to every community member, leader and partner who showed up! 💚

The Ghana Energy Transition Framework, developed by the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, provides a roadmap for guiding the country towards a cleaner, more sustainable and inclusive energy future through reduced emissions, increased use of clean energy and support for sustainable livelihoods. As part of Kasa Initiative Ghana’s mandate as a Civil Society, Kasa is helping translate these national energy-transition goals into practical and understandable actions for local communities. As part of this effort, Kasa organised a capacity-building exercise in Anloga District, Volta Region, to build the capacity of fish processors on improved fish-smoking technologies as cleaner and more fuel-efficient alternatives to traditional fuelwood use. The exercise helped participants connect Ghana’s energy-transition priorities with practical actions that can reduce environmental impacts, protect ecosystems and support sustainable livelihoods.

🌳 Kasa Initiative Ghana Strengthens Civil Society Engagement on National Environmental Processes
As part of its role in regularly informing and updating civil society platforms on national processes in the Natural Resources and Environment (NRE) sector, Kasa Initiative Ghana engaged Forest Watch Ghana to provide updates on key developments in Ghana’s forest, climate and natural resource governance. Represented by Jonathan Gokah, Kasa shared updates on the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDCs), National Adaptation Plan (NAP), National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP), Forest Restoration, Carbon Markets, Constitutional Review (Environment Sector Reforms) and Ghana Annual Budgeting Processes. Kasa also facilitated discussions on progress, emerging challenges and opportunities for stronger civil society participation. The engagement reinforced the need to move beyond policy commitments towards measurable results, meaningful community participation and fair benefit-sharing, strengthening the link between national processes, civil society and communities.

🌱 Kasa Initiative Ghana Strengthens Civil Society capacities on Gender-Responsive Climate Budgeting
Kasa initiative Ghana engaged women-led, climate-focused CSOs to strengthen capacities towards influencing Ghana’s national budget processes and to delve into how much of Ghana’s national budget respond and address gender and climate priorities. Key findings from the CSOs analysis of the 2026 budget statement includes the following: Climate allocations increased from 0.2% in 2025 to 1.06% in 2026 while gender allocations increased from 0.22% to 7.28% respectfuly. This shows progress, but not enough. The engagement strengthened participants’ ability to analyse budget allocations, apply climate and gender budget tagging, track expenditure and use social audits to assess how public resources respond to gender inequalities, climate change and social protection needs. Through these efforts, Kasa Initiative Ghana continues to connect civil society voices with national policy and budget processes, promoting evidence-based advocacy and more inclusive, climate-responsive public investments.

NATIONAL STAKEHOLDERS VALIDATION WORKSHOP ON GHANA’S 2025 UPDATED NATIONALLY DETERMINED CONTRIBUTION 1.2/2.0: Venue: Capital View ;Date:14th MAY, 2026

In line with Article 4.2 of the Paris Agreement, Ghana, as a Party to the Agreement, is mandated to prepare, communicate, and periodically update its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) as part of global efforts to combat climate change and enhance resilience. Parties were expected to submit updated NDCs ahead of the last Conference of the Parties (COP) in Belém, Brazil. However, Ghana was unable to finalize and submit its updated NDC within the required timeline. Efforts are currently underway by the Government of Ghana and key stakeholders to ensure that the country submits a robust and inclusive NDC ahead of COP31.
Following sustained advocacy by Kasa Initiative Ghana for the meaningful inclusion of Non-State Actors in Ghana’s NDC development process, significant progress has been made toward strengthening participatory climate governance in the country. Through strategic engagement and collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, and the UNDP Ghana, Kasa Initiative Ghana successfully championed the integration of perspectives and recommendations from civil society organizations, local communities, Indigenous Peoples, academia, youth groups, women-led organizations, and private sector actors into the national climate policy framework.
As part of this process, Kasa Initiative Ghana, with the strategic support of the Ministry, organized a national validation workshop for Non-State Actors to review, discuss, and validate key components of Ghana’s updated NDC. The validation process provided an important platform for stakeholders to assess proposed mitigation and adaptation actions, financing needs, implementation arrangements, and accountability mechanisms within the NDC framework. It also ensured that the voices, priorities, and lived experiences of vulnerable and frontline communities were reflected in Ghana’s climate commitments. Today, Kasa Initiative Ghana, in partnership with World University Service of Canada (WUSC-EUMC) , Ghana Youth Environmental Movement, and The Eblah Foundation, took meaningful climate action at Laboma Beach, Accra! ♻️

Together with passionate volunteers including inspiring young women leaders from our partner organizations ; we conducted a successful physical clean-up campaign, collecting ~250kg of waste from just a 300-metre stretch of shoreline. 🙌
This activity embodies the 2026 World Earth Day theme, "Our Power: Our Planet", and reinforces our shared commitment to:

🌍✨ COMMEMORATING WORLD EARTH DAY 2026: “Our Power, Our Planet”

In celebration of World Earth Day, Kasa Initiative Ghana in partnership with World University Service of Canada (WUSC-EUMC), Ghana Youth Environmental Movement, The Eblah Foundation, and the La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly, is proud to commemorate this global day of environmental action through a targeted Beach Clean-Up Exercise at Laboma Beach, Accra.

This initiative brings together volunteers; predominantly youth and young women to take collective action against marine pollution, promote sustainable waste segregation, and protect Ghana’s coastal ecosystems.

From conversation to transformation!

From policy to practice; this was the guiding theme as Kasa Initiative Ghana facilitated an intensive Environmental Sustainability and Climate Action capacity-strengthening training that was convened by WUSC Ghana for partners on 10–11 March 2026, hosted at Hephzibah Christian Centre (Aburi Peduase).
On 11 March, the ESCA sessions came alive through presentations, group work and honest discussions about what it really takes to integrate Environmental Sustainability and Climate Action (ESCA) across organisational systems;beyond isolated project activities. The training was facilitated by Jonathan Gokah (National Coordinator) and Gayson Siampongo (ESCA Advisor), who unpacked the global climate imperative, Ghana’s climate governance landscape, and the practical “how-to” of embedding ESCA through the full project life cycle;from assessment and design to implementation, learning and reporting.
A key takeaway was the importance of coordinated integration. When institutions work in silos, climate contributions can become fragmented sometimes happening, but not systematically tracked, strengthened, or reported. Participants also explored what often drives climate proposals to be rejected, including vague climate claims, weak theories of change, poor indicators, limited risk analysis, and unrealistic resourcing.
We extend our sincere appreciation to World University Service of Canada (WUSC-EUMC) with support from Canada’s International Development – Global Affairs Canada for its continued commitment to partner capacity strengthening and cross-cutting integration. Besides that we also benefited from complementary learning sessions including GESI (Gender Equality & Social Inclusion) & Resource Mobilisation.
