🌱 Building the Future of Climate-Smart Green Enterprises

Last week in Accra, the Catalist Initiative and the Agentur für Wirtschaft und Entwicklung (AWE), together with GreenTec Capital Africa Foundation and ShEquity, hosted the closing event of the "Unlocking Carbon Credit Opportunities for Gender-Smart Green SMEs Technical Assistance Facility."

The event brought together green SMEs from across Ghana, alongside partners, investors, and ecosystem actors, all committed to building an investment-ready pipeline of climate-focused businesses.

The pilot programme addressed a critical challenge: while carbon markets are becoming an increasingly important source of global climate finance, many African SMEs particularly women-led businesses still face barriers to accessing these opportunities.

Through targeted technical assistance, participating enterprises gained a deeper understanding of carbon markets, assessed their emission-reduction potential, and took their first steps toward transforming their climate impact into a new revenue stream.

A major highlight of the event was the pitch session, where 10 gender-smart green SMEs presented their businesses to an expert jury after months of support focused on investment readiness and carbon market preparedness.

Congratulations to all 10 finalists, and special congratulations to Dyson Energy and Gateway Feeds and Farms, the two winning enterprises that each received €25,000 in catalytic funding to advance their journey toward carbon certification.

Growing Stronger Together: Empowering Ghana's Cashew SMEs🌍

Four Ghanaian SMEs joined 41 businesses from across Africa at the Matching Grant Fund (MGF) workshops in Benin and Kenya to strengthen their projects, exchange experiences, and explore practical solutions for sustainable growth.

The workshops focused on financial management, business development, value addition, sustainability, digitalisation, certification, carbon credits, beekeeping, and cashew apple valorisation—equipping participants with knowledge to improve their businesses and build resilience🤝.

As Eric Nutsu of Josaco, Ghana, noted, the MGF has strengthened internal systems and financial management while supporting better farm practices, including beekeeping to improve cashew yields through pollination.

Today, the Matching Grant Fund supports 42 SMEs across 17 OACPS countries, mobilising €5.1 million in private investment and €3.3 million from GIZ/EU, demonstrating how Team Europe partnerships are driving innovation, investment, and sustainable growth across Africa's cashew value chain.

The Matching Grant Fund (MGF) is implemented under the Joint Action "Business Support Facility for Resilient Agricultural Value Chains" (BSF4RAVC), co-funded by the European Union in Ghana under the Samoa Agreement with the OACPS Secretariat - Secrétariat OEACP and the Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ), implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

🌾 From Harvest to Profit: Smarter Storage for Better Markets in Ghana!

After two years of collaboration, innovation, and impact, the "Reducing Post-Harvest Losses and Utilizing Agricultural Residues" project has successfully come to a close.

During the project's closing week, partners from government, academia, the private sector, financial institutions, farmer organisations, and development partners came together to celebrate the achievements made and explore how to sustain and scale the project's impact.

The week featured two key milestones:
📍 The inauguration of a new community warehouse in Shebo, Northern Region, on 30 June, strengthening local storage infrastructure.
📍 A participatory stakeholder workshop in Accra on 2 July, where partners reflected on lessons learned and identified priorities for the future.

Over the past two years, this partnership between Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, Saving Grains 301 GmbH, and numerous local partners has demonstrated that innovative post-harvest solutions can strengthen food security, reduce losses, and create new economic opportunities for smallholder farmers.

Key achievements:
→ 16,000+ smallholder farmers trained in improved post-harvest management, including over 8,000 women.
→ 90% of trained farmers adopted at least one improved post-harvest management practice.
→ 80% of trained farmers reported reduced post-harvest losses.
→ More than 1,000 metric tonnes of grain traded through the business model in the last 12 months.
→ 6,000+ hermetic storage bags introduced to the market.
→ 17.5% reduction in post-harvest losses achieved within the Saving Grains business model.

Together with our partners, we reviewed lessons learned, reflected on the project's achievements, and identified priorities for scaling successful innovations, strengthening market linkages, and expanding farmers' access to markets and finance.

As the project concludes, we look forward to seeing these efforts continue to strengthen resilient and sustainable food systems in Ghana.

🌍 Strengthening Ghana’s MSME Future Through Digital Innovation

On Monday, Ghana joined the global community to commemorate the 10th United Nations Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSME) Day under the theme: “Elevating the Future Generation of Ghana’s MSMEs Through Digital Empowerment and Innovation.” The event highlighted the importance of equipping entrepreneurs with digital tools, skills, and market access to thrive in a rapidly evolving economy.

The programme was organised by the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness & Industry, Motai- Ghana, Ghana Enterprises Agency, and MTN Ghana, in collaboration with GIZ Ghana, UNDP Ghana, Stanbic Bank Ghana, and other partners.

MSMEs remain central to Ghana’s economic transformation, driving innovation, job creation, and inclusive growth📊 .

A key highlight was the launch of the MSME Gateway, a digital one-stop platform connecting entrepreneurs to business support services, financing opportunities, capacity-building resources, and local and international markets. The initiative was supported by GIZ Ghana.

Speaking at the event, Sivine Jansen, Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy Accra, reaffirmed the German Development Cooperation’s commitment to strengthening MSMEs:

“MSMEs are essential to economic development and resilient societies. They create jobs, foster innovation, and are critical to sustainable development. We remain committed to supporting MSME growth and competitiveness in an increasingly digital and global economy.”

The celebration reinforced a shared commitment to building a more inclusive, innovative, and digitally empowered enterprise ecosystem.

🟥 Red Card to Child Labour in the Cocoa Sector ✋

Every child deserves a safe childhood, quality education, and the opportunity to reach their full potential.

In commemoration of the World Day Against Child Labour, GIZ, in collaboration with the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), brought together over 480 students (51% females and 49% males), farmers, and key stakeholders in Assin Akonfudi, Central Region, to take a stand against child labour in cocoa-growing communities.

The event highlighted the urgent need to eliminate child labour and promote responsible cocoa production. Representatives from the Ghana Education Service, Department of Social Welfare, farmer cooperatives and unions, district assembly, Licensed Buying Companies, and traditional authorities joined the campaign to raise awareness and strengthen collective action.

Adding excitement to the event, three schools competed in a lively quiz competition, with Akonfudi A Primary School emerging as the winner! 🎉🏆

Together, we are building cocoa communities where children are in school, learning, and thriving — not engaged in child labour.
