🚀 Advancing Digital Education Across Africa Through Shared Learning and Collaboration🌍

How can African countries accelerate digital transformation in education while navigating diverse national contexts and challenges?

This week in Accra, representatives from Ministries of Education and partner institutions from 15 African countries came together for the GenerationDigital! Regional Exchange to share experiences, lessons learned, and explore practical approaches to digital skills development. 🤝🌍

Through country presentations, peer-learning sessions, and thematic discussions, one message stood out clearly: there is no one-size-fits-all approach to digital education transformation. However, there is immense value in learning from one another, adapting successful practices to local contexts, and building strong partnerships across borders. 🌐

Key highlights included:
✅ Peer learning on digital skills policies and strategies
✅ Country case studies and experience sharing
✅ Discussions on scaling digital education and fostering inclusion
✅ Strengthening regional cooperation for sustainable impact

What made the exchange particularly valuable was the diversity of perspectives in the room. Countries at different stages of their digital transformation journeys came together to openly share successes, challenges, and lessons learned, creating a rich platform for mutual learning and collaboration. 🌱💬

🚀 PSInno Officially Takes Off in Northern Ghana! 🌟

Innovation, entrepreneurship, and collaboration took center stage in Tamale as the Private Sector Innovation Promotion (PSInno) Project was officially launched, marking the beginning of an exciting journey to strengthen businesses, create jobs, and unlock opportunities across Northern Ghana.

The launch featured a vibrant exhibition showcasing local entrepreneurs, SMEs, innovators, and agribusinesses, highlighting the region’s growing potential as a hub for enterprise development, technology, and innovation. 📱

H.E. Frederik Landshöft, German Ambassador to Ghana, emphasized that Northern Ghana is defined not by its challenges, but by its people, entrepreneurial spirit, untapped potential, and opportunities for sustainable prosperity. He noted that access to finance, technology, markets, knowledge, and networks remains critical for helping businesses grow and thrive.

The event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including government representatives, development partners, innovation hubs, private sector leaders, SMEs, and young entrepreneurs, all united by a shared vision of building a more competitive, resilient, and inclusive economy. 🌍

Among the distinguished guests were Madam Cynthia Djokoto, Director of SME Development at MoTAI; Professor Terry, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Consumer Sciences at UDS; Frédéric Feraille, Managing Director of Guinness Ghana; and Sumaila Ewuntomi Abudu, Regional Coordinating Director.

Through strategic partnerships and innovation-driven initiatives, PSInno aims to:

🛡️ Safety Begins at Home: Protecting Ghana's Journalists from Within

A free and independent press is essential for democracy. But journalists cannot hold power to account if they are not protected.

A new study by the Media Foundation for West Africa(MFWA) has revealed that most media houses in Ghana lack formal safety policies, leaving journalists especially those reporting on corruption and illegal mining exposed to significant risks.

From physical threats to intimidation and harassment, many journalists continue to work without the safeguards needed to carry out their duties safely.

To address this challenge, MFWA is working closely with media houses, civil society organisations, the Ghana Police Service, media regulators, and journalist associations to develop:

✅ A model safety policy for media organisations
✅ A national framework for journalist safety
✅ Stronger protection mechanisms for media professionals

The goal is clear: to create an environment where journalists can do their work freely, safely, and without fear.

By doing so, stakeholders are laying the foundation for a media landscape that is protected, independent, and impactful, one that strengthens accountability, transparency, and democratic governance in Ghana.

🌐 Advancing a Safer and More Inclusive E-commerce Ecosystem in Ghana

As Ghana’s digital economy continues to expand, building consumer trust, strengthening regulatory frameworks, and improving the overall online shopping experience have become increasingly important for sustainable e-commerce growth.

To contribute to this effort, the Focus Group Discussion on the National E-commerce Practitioners Guide brought together regulators, ecosystem actors, development partners, and private sector stakeholders to examine the realities shaping Ghana’s digital commerce landscape and identify practical pathways for improvement.

Discussions highlighted several challenges affecting consumers and businesses, including online fraud and cybersecurity risks, data protection concerns, unclear return and refund policies, internet reliability challenges, payment limitations, and regulatory coordination gaps.

In response to these challenges, stakeholders explored practical and future-focused solutions to strengthen Ghana’s e-commerce ecosystem, including:
🔹 Artificial intelligence (AI) tools
🔹 Automated monitoring systems
🔹 Enhanced regulatory coordination
🔹 Stable and reliable internet infrastructure such as blockchain technologyand drone delivery solutions

Speaking at the event, Dr. Mark-Oliver Kevor, Director-General of National Information Technology Agency(NITA) Ghana, commended the platform for creating an opportunity for stakeholders to collaboratively explore solutions that will contribute to a safer, more trusted, and inclusive digital marketplace in Ghana.

The discussions further emphasized the need for stronger consumer protection, clearer regulatory guidance, expanded payment options, and continuous innovation to support the growth of Ghana’s evolving digital economy.

By bringing together key actors across the digital commerce ecosystem, the engagement contributes to laying the foundation for a more secure, innovative, and inclusive e-commerce environment that benefits businesses, consumers, and Ghana’s broader digital transformation agenda.

🛡️ Strengthening Security Sector Governance for Peace and Stability in Ghana 🇬🇭

As Ghana and the wider ECOWAS region continue to respond to emerging security threats and spillover effects from the Sahel, strengthening accountability, public trust, and cooperation within the security sector remains increasingly important.

To contribute to these efforts, the ECOWAS Peace, Security and Governance (EPSG) Project and the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) convened a two-day stakeholder workshop in Accra on Security Sector Reform and Governance (SSRG) in Ghana. 🤝

The workshop brought together representatives from security agencies, Parliament, ministries, civil society organizations, development partners, ECOWAS, and accountability institutions to examine Ghana’s SSRG priorities and identify practical pathways for reform and collaboration.

Through expert presentations, panel discussions, and interactive group sessions, participants:
✅ Identified critical SSRG gaps and priority intervention areas
✅ Explored strategies to strengthen oversight and accountability
✅ Examined the role of civil society and civil-security cooperation
✅ Shared recommendations to improve trust, coordination, and responsiveness within the security sector
✅ Contributed to the development of a draft SSRG intervention roadmap for Ghana under EPSG’s support to ECOWAS

In his opening remarks, Mr. Jonas Claes, Deputy Head of Delegation of the European Union, reiterated the EU’s commitment to supporting collaborative solutions to cross-border security challenges. 🇪🇺

Mr. George Amoh, Executive Secretary of the National Peace Council, also noted:
“This workshop comes at the right time as Ghana and the region continue to strengthen responses to emerging security challenges and spillover effects from the Sahel.”

By fostering inclusive dialogue and multi-stakeholder engagement, the workshop contributes to strengthening democratic governance, enhancing public confidence in security institutions, and promoting sustainable peace and stability across Ghana and the ECOWAS region. 🌍

Commissioned by Germany and co-financed by the European Union in Ghana, the project is implemented through a Team Europe approach by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, Expertise France (EF), and Fundación para la Internacionalización de las Administraciones Públicas (FIAP) in partnership with Ecowas - Cedeao.
