Who decided that Koblimahagu, a community in Northern Ghana, needed a new health centre? 🏥🇬🇭🇩🇪

Not Germany. Not an international organisation. The people of Koblimahagu themselves.

And now, a pregnant woman can receive antenatal care closer to home. A child can be vaccinated. An illness can be detected before it becomes an emergency.

German Ambassador Frederik Landshöft, GIZ Country Director Sandra Retzer and KfW Country Director Amelie Stanzel-Ferreira joined the community and the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly to inaugurate the new CHPS Compound, bringing essential healthcare closer to around 8,400 people.

But the story of this health centre started long before yesterday.

The community identified better access to healthcare as a priority. The Tamale Metropolitan Assembly included it in its development plans. Through German Cooperation, GIZ Ghana helped strengthen participatory planning and local governance, while KfW contributed financing through Ghana’s District Assemblies Common Fund Responsiveness Factor Grant.

And this is part of a much bigger story. Since 2009, Germany has contributed around GHS 774 million to this programme, making it the largest international contributor. Together with Ghana and Switzerland, the programme has helped finance more than 11,200 infrastructure projects across all 261 districts of Ghana.

This is what modern cooperation between Ghana and Germany looks like: local priorities, strong Ghanaian institutions and partners investing together in concrete results.

The community spoke. The Assembly listened. Partners joined forces. And together, we delivered. 💪

Innovating Ghana’s Food Future 🌱💡

How can digital technology help reduce food waste, minimise post-harvest losses and improve farmers’ access to markets?

Young innovators and startups are exploring these solutions through data science, artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technology.

Launched during the 2026 Ghana Data Science Summit (GDSS), the AgriTech Innovation Challenge brought together innovators to develop digital solutions to some of Ghana’s pressing agricultural challenges. Organised by the Ghana Data Science Network with support from the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, the challenge focused on strengthening connections across the agricultural value chain.

The challenge attracted 72 submissions, with 28 candidates shortlisted. Eight teams went on to develop and pitch prototypes of digital farmer-to-buyer marketplace platforms, and three teams were selected as finalists.

Their solutions explored ways to connect farmers directly with buyers, improve access to markets and storage, and strengthen links between farmers, buyers and consumers. Features such as field-agent support, warehousing and SMS notifications also aimed to make these platforms more accessible and practical for farmers.

Peace and Security: What Happens When Young People Have a Say in Preventing Conflict🤝🕊️

Localised conflicts have a profound effect on the livelihoods of youth. They are negatively affecting young people’s employment opportunities and spark social instability.

On 6 October 2026, more than 30 youth-led and youth-focused civil society organisations came together in Accra, Ghana to officially launch the Civil Society Coalition on Youth, Peace and Security (YPS) in a knowledge exchange forum.

Why does this matter and how is Germany involved?

Ghana is moving towards the completion of its National Action Plan on Youth, Peace and Security (NAP-YPS). While the action plan has been developed through broad consultations, its effective implementation will require sustained partnerships between government, young people, civil society and development partners.

This is where the new Coalition can make a difference by:
→ Connecting existing civil society and youth-led initiatives.
→ Sharing knowledge, experiences and evidence.
→ Strengthening advocacy and a coordinated civil society voice.
→ Following up on the implementation of the NAP-YPS.
→ Tracking progress and generating independent perspectives on implementation.

The Coalition therefore has the potential to become an important platform for ensuring that commitments translate into meaningful action and that young people have a stronger voice in shaping peace and security efforts in Ghana.

The forum was convened under the leadership of African Students for Interfaith Tolerance, in partnership with the National Youth Authority, UNDP Ghana and UNFPA, with technical and funding support from the Support to ECOWAS in Peace, Security and Governance (EPSG) Project.

For Germany and Europe, supporting Ghana’s YPS agenda is part of our commitment to supporting local, inclusive and human-centred approaches to peace and security. Through the EPSG project, we are pleased to support efforts that strengthen national capacities and create meaningful opportunities for young people to contribute to conflict prevention.

The ECOWAS Peace, Security and Governance (EPSG) Project is commissioned by Germany and co-funded by the European Union in Ghana and Denmark. The project is implemented in a Team Europe approach by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, Expertise France and FIAP, in partnership with Ecowas - Cedeao.

Why was improving food and nutrition security a key topic in Accra last week?

Food and nutrition security means ensuring reliable access to sufficient affordable, nutritious food to lead a healthy life.

This means, farmers produce enough goods , businesses creating better food products, and families having greater access to nutritious food.

But getting there takes even greater efforts. It requires stronger food systems, resilient livelihoods, effective nutrition policies and partnerships that connect agriculture, markets and nutrition.

That was a key message at the Micronutrient Forum Global Conference 2026 in Accra, one of the largest events globally on the topic, where stakeholders explored how to turn evidence, partnerships and nutrition governance into lasting improvements in people’s diets.

At GIZ, this work spans different sectors.

Through the Global Programme Food and Nutrition Security, Enhanced Resilience, GIZ’s work has contributed to improved diets for 5.4 million people living in rural areas. The Global Programme Modular Nutrition Actions is building on this experience by integrating effective nutrition approaches into existing projects, including a focus on large-scale food fortification.

In Ghana, programmes such as Market-Oriented Value Chains for Jobs and Growth in the ECOWAS Region (MOVE) are helping strengthen the systems that make nutritious food more accessible while creating opportunities for farmers and businesses.

Take BBN Farmers COOP, an all-women rice producers’ cooperative in Ghana’s Upper East Region. With support through a Matching Grant Fund, the cooperative has been able to increase productivity, improve the quality of its parboiled rice and ensure a more reliable supply of paddy rice.

It is one example of how investing in agricultural businesses can contribute to stronger markets, more resilient livelihoods and better access to food.

Because food and nutrition security is not only about what is on our plates. It is also about the systems, people and partnerships that make nutritious food possible. 🌍

The initiative is co-funded by the Gates Foundation and the Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ), implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH through the MOVE-ComCashew programme.

Tarkwa, we are off to a great start!

The Empowering Women in Mining Transport project has kicked off its complementary entrepreneurship training, bringing together about 50 amazing women, aspiring entrepreneurs, Chamber of Commerce members and students from the University of Mines and Technology.

The goal? To build the knowledge, confidence and practical skills needed to start, manage and grow successful businesses.

Participants explored:

Entrepreneurship & Entrepreneurial Mindset, Business Management, Budgeting, Forecasting & Financial Systems

But the learning didn’t end when the sessions did!

Participants eagerly connected with the trainers through one-on-one mentorship, asking questions, identifying gaps in their business practices and getting practical guidance on how to improve.

The enthusiasm, questions and willingness to learn were truly inspiring!
