🚀 Ghana Launches National AI Strategy — Powering the Future of Digital Transformation 🤖

Ghana has marked an important milestone in its digital transformation journey with the official launch of the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy (2025–2035). The strategy sets out a clear and ambitious vision to harness AI for inclusive growth, improve public service delivery, and position Ghana as a leading AI hub on the African continent.

Looking back at last week’s launch, the event reflects the outcome of an extensive and collaborative process—from early research and ecosystem analysis to stakeholder consultations, validation, and finalisation. It stands as a strong example of how multi-stakeholder collaboration can shape forward-looking digital policy grounded in both global best practices and local realities.

Through the FAIR Forward – Artificial Intelligence for All initiative, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH supported the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations and Innovations and the Data Protection Commission Ghana throughout the development of the strategy. This included ecosystem analysis, stakeholder mapping, technical guidance, and implementation-focused workshops that helped refine the strategy into a practical and actionable framework.

The official launch event was further supported by the Private Sector and Innovation Promotion (PSInno) project, contributing to the coordination and visibility of the strategy’s unveiling.

This is an initiative of the Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ), implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH under the FAIR Forward – Artificial Intelligence for All initiative.

🌱Empowering Cocoa Frontliners to End Child Labour in the Ghana Cocoa Sector 🍫

Child labour in the Ghana cocoa sector remains a key concern, requiring strengthened and coordinated action across cocoa-growing communities.

The Sustainable Cocoa Programme, in collaboration with partners, supported the rollout of the COCOBOD Child Labour Manual and the digital Cocoa Sector–Child Labour Monitoring System (CS-CLMS).

A two-week Training of Trainers (ToT) was organised for 79 Regional Extension Officers and District Extension Coordinators (82% males, 18% females) of the Ghana Cocoa Board. The training forms part of the country-wide rollout of the CS-CLMS, which has been tested in the Assin Fosu District.

Extension officers are equipped to identify and report child labour cases using standardised guidelines. In Assin Fosu, cases have been identified and referred to remediation measures through competent authorities such as Social Welfare.

Cascaded training is expected to reach over 1,400 extension officers across cocoa-producing districts, strengthening the capacity to identify, prevent, and respond to child labour risks, and ensuring safeguarding principles are applied from policy to farmer level.

This initiative supports Ghana’s commitment to ethical cocoa production and the protection of children’s rights, contributing to a responsible and sustainable cocoa supply chain 🤝.

🚴‍♀️800 Kilometers, 1,000 Trees: A Ride for Ghana’s Future 🌳

The European Union Delegation in Ghana took to bicycles for a symbolic and impactful environmental action, promoting green mobility while actively supporting nationwide tree planting initiatives 🌱

The “Ride with Team Europe” event combined climate awareness with action, showcasing a shared commitment to restoring landscapes, reducing carbon emissions, and building a more sustainable future for Ghana.

Over the 800-kilometer stretch, 1,000 plants were planted. In the bicycle relay from Sunyani to Kumasi (130 km), the German Team took the lead with Ms. Sivine Jansen, Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy Accra, and Ms. Claudia Maier, Programme Coordinator for our Sustainable Cocoa Programme.

The challenging ride was accompanied and secured by the Gladiator Cycling Association, promoting green mobility, raising climate awareness, and encouraging collective responsibility toward sustainable land restoration🚴‍♀️

This initiative demonstrates that climate action thrives where collaboration meets commitment; turning every kilometer cycled and every tree planted into a lasting investment in Ghana’s environmental future.

Challenging Harmful Norms, Building an Inclusive Society ⚖️🌍

From harmful stereotypes to silence in the face of abuse, these patterns don’t just appear—they are shaped by all of us. The “normal” can sometimes be the root of harm.

Change begins with awareness and grows through conversation. It becomes real when we choose to challenge the status quo and speak up against harmful masculinity that fuels discrimination and sexual and gender-based violence.

Watch, reflect, and join the movement toward a more inclusive society where these norms are questioned and transformed ✊🏽

Strengthening Integrated Healthcare for NCDs in Ghana 🏥💙

Last week, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service and the Ministry of Health, Ghana, successfully delivered a week-long Training of Trainers under the AYA Integrated Healthcare Initiative, bringing together more than 100 healthcare professionals from across the country 👩🏽‍⚕️

Held concurrently in Kumasi and Tamale for the Southern and Northern belts respectively, the training convened doctors, physician assistants, nurses, community health nurses, and nutritionists around a shared goal: strengthening the delivery of integrated care for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and Type 2 Diabetes 🩺.

A key focus was the rollout of updated national treatment guidelines for CVDs and Type 2 Diabetes, delivered through a standardised Training Facilitator’s Guide 📘

Through the AYA Integrated Healthcare Initiative, regional trainers are being equipped to systematically transfer national standards and best practices to district and sub-district levels, ensuring that health professionals across the country are trained according to harmonised clinical and training guidelines.

Ensuring that trainers are equipped to cascade care in line with national treatment standards and an institutionalised training approach across all levels of the health system.

This approach strengthens prevention, early detection and long-term management of NCDs, contributing to improved health outcomes.

AYA is implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in close cooperation with the Ministry of Health, Ghana and the Ghana Health Service with funding support from Bayer, Panorama Global, Sanofi and the Gates Foundation.

From Farm to Port: Strengthening Trust in Ghana’s Cocoa Value Chain 🍫🌍

What does it take to track cocoa from a single farm all the way to the port and build global trust along the way? 🤔

Through the Team Europe Initiative on Sustainable Cocoa, a joint program of the European Union in Ghana and the German Cooperation, partners are supporting Ghana’s cocoa sector with coordinated efforts to improve transparency, sustainability, and accountability across the value chain

Ms. Sivine Jansen, Deputy Head of the German Embassy Accra, paid a visit to Nanketewa in the Sunyani area to explore firsthand the progress of the digital Ghana Cocoa Traceability System (GCTS) 📍.

The visit highlighted how the Ghana Cocoa Board has managed to install the world-wide first traceability system for cocoa, demonstrating strong motivation to strengthen transparency, sustainability, and accountability from farm to port 🚢.

While the progress achieved is commendable, Ms. Jansen’s remarks also highlight the urgency of timely implementation of the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), as further delays could impose additional financial and operational burdens on the Ghana Cocoa Board and the private sector .

Moving forward, decisive action, aligned policies, and continued international partnership will be critical to safeguarding these gains and securing a competitive, resilient future for Ghana’s cocoa industry 🚀.

Ghana is not just exporting cocoa; we are exporting credibility and sustainability 🌍.

Tracking cocoa from tree to trade🌴

Ghana’s cocoa sector is entering a new phase of transparency, sustainability, and farmer inclusion. We are proud to see our work featured in D+C Development and Cooperation🌱.

Through the Ghana Cocoa Traceability System (GCTS), implemented by Ghana Cocoa Board with support from Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, cocoa can now be traced from farm to port, helping Ghana meet the requirements of the EU Deforestation Regulation and respond to growing global demands for ethical sourcing🌍.

The pilot phase already shows what is possible:
→ Over 40,000 farms mapped and 20,000+ farmers registered (40% women)
→ Digital tools like GPS mapping, barcoding, and mobile data capture enabling full traceability
→ Traceable cocoa successfully exported, proving compliance is achievable

Beyond compliance, the system is transforming lives giving farmers digital identities, improving access to inputs and services, and creating opportunities for fairer pricing and greater inclusion in the value chain🤝.

As Ghana prepares for a nationwide rollout, this initiative demonstrates how digital innovation, strong partnerships, and policy alignment can reshape an entire sector, positioning Ghana as a leader in sustainable cocoa production
