UrbSafe Ghana Response to GRSA Technical Working Group Report

We commend the Ghana Road Safety Authority for advancing evidence-based dialogue through the Technical Working Group Report on vehicle safety.

The findings highlight critical structural issues within Ghanaโ€™s transport ecosystem, particularly the role of imported vehicle configurations and the unintended consequences of revenue driven transport models. The observation that unrealistic revenue targets push drivers toward speeding and unsafe practices is especially important and aligns with growing evidence on how economic incentives shape road user behavior.

At UrbSafe Ghana, we emphasize that road safety cannot be addressed through enforcement alone. A Safe System approach requires:
โ€ข Aligning economic incentives with safety outcomes
Transport operators should not be forced into unsafe behaviors due to daily sales targets or low passenger capacity constraints.
โ€ข Strengthening vehicle import and standards enforcement
Ensuring that vehicles entering the system are fit-for-purpose, safe, and compliant with national regulations.
โ€ข Integrating behavioral and structural interventions
This includes enforcement, but also financing models, driver welfare, training systems, and accountability mechanisms.
โ€ข Prioritizing data-driven and context-specific reforms
Particularly in high-risk sectors such as commercial transport and emerging mobility systems.

We believe this report provides a timely opportunity to rethink transport governance in Ghana; moving beyond fragmented interventions toward coordinated, multi-sectoral strategies that address the root causes of unsafe road use.

UrbSafe Ghana remains committed to supporting policy dialogue, research, and implementation efforts that make Ghanaโ€™s roads safer for all.

โญ The African Road Safety Charter has come into force ๐ŸŒ

The Charter marks Africaโ€™s first continental and legally-binding road safety framework. It opens a new era for road safety governance on the continent, and compels countries to take proven, life-saving actions to boost road safety.

๐ŸŽ„โœจ Seasonโ€™s Greetings from UrbSafe Ghana โœจ๐ŸŽ„

At UrbSafe Ghana, our work is rooted in addressing road safety, injury prevention, and the major challenges facing our rapidly urbanizing cities. As we reflect on the year, we are grateful to everyone who has supported our efforts to protect lives, promote safer mobility, and build healthier urban communities.

This festive season reminds us that safer roads and safer cities are a shared responsibility. Together, we can reduce preventable injuries and create urban spaces where everyoneโ€”especially the youth and vulnerable road usersโ€”can thrive.

Merry Christmas and a safer, healthier New Year ahead! ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŒ

Road Safety & Precaution Training Successfully Held! ๐Ÿšฆโœจ

We are excited to share that UrbSafe Ghana has successfully conducted a comprehensive road safety and precaution training session with the brilliant students of Imam Khomeini Islamic JHS in the Central Region.

The engagement was highly interactiveโ€”students asked thoughtful questions, shared their experiences, and learned practical tips on safe walking, crossing, and staying alert on the road. Their enthusiasm and participation were inspiring!

A safer future begins with informed young people, and we are proud to play a part in empowering them with life-saving knowledge. ๐Ÿ’™
