When I say "foundation," many people hear "something free is coming."

It caught me off guard at first. But over time, I realized: it's not their fault. This is what decades of donation-driven interventions have taught communities—that NGOs arrive, distribute items, take photos, and leave.

So when I asked for people's time, ideas, and leadership, I was met with confusion. Some were even disappointed.

That made me reflect deeply:

Have we unintentionally created a culture of dependency?

Here's what I've come to understand:

✓Relief = emergency aid (necessary and life-saving)
✓Development = building local capacity, leadership, and ownership

True development doesn't happen when we do things for people. It happens when we do things with them.

At Ayeyi Impact Foundation, we now prioritize one thing before any project begins: managing expectations, building trust, and inviting communities to be co-creators—not passive recipients.

Sustainable change requires partners, not beneficiaries.

Reflections from Community Development in Rural Ghana

Reflection 1: When a Foundation Means "Something Free Is Coming"

One of the biggest surprises I encountered when I started community work was the reaction people had when I introduced myself as part of a foundation.

The moment I mentioned that we were a foundation, many people immediately assumed that we had come to distribute something—money, food, clothing, or other items. At first, I was shocked. The expectation was so strong that I found myself asking a deeper question:

How did we get here?

Over time, I realized that for many communities, the words foundation and NGO have become closely associated with receiving donations. Their experiences have taught them that when organizations arrive, they often bring gifts, take photographs, and leave. As a result, community members naturally expect to be beneficiaries rather than active participants.

This became particularly evident when I introduced projects that required community involvement and ownership. Instead of excitement, some people viewed participation as a burden. They were not accustomed to being asked to contribute ideas, volunteer their time, or take responsibility for sustaining a project. That was not the model they had become familiar with.

This observation led me to a difficult but important question:

Have development efforts unintentionally created a culture of dependency in some communities?

True development is not only about providing resources. It is also about building capacity, encouraging ownership, and empowering people to become part of the solution. While donations can provide immediate relief, lasting change often happens when communities see themselves not merely as recipients, but as partners.

This experience changed the way I think about community development. Before any project begins, there is often a need to reshape expectations and build a shared understanding that meaningful change requires participation from everyone involved.

At Ayeyi Impact Foundation, we believe that young people should not wait until graduation to begin creating impact, building experience, and positioning themselves for the future.

We were honored to partner with Student Circle Initiative and the SRC of UHAS for a seminar on "Positioning Yourself for Employment Before Graduation," engaging students in a practical conversation on employability, entrepreneurship, networking, personal branding, and opportunity creation.

One of the key messages shared with the students was that employability extends beyond academic qualifications. In today's world, graduates must be able to demonstrate leadership, problem-solving ability, initiative, community engagement, and the capacity to create value.

Students were challenged to move beyond theory and take action by forming small teams to adopt schools and communities where they can apply their knowledge to address real-life challenges. For health students, this could involve health education campaigns, personal hygiene awareness, disease prevention initiatives, and other community-based interventions.

Such experiences not only benefit communities but also help students develop communication skills, leadership capacity, confidence, professional networks, and practical experience that distinguish them in an increasingly competitive world.

The interactive nature of the session was particularly encouraging, as students actively engaged in discussions around entrepreneurship, networking, confidence building, career development, and personal growth. Their curiosity, enthusiasm, and willingness to learn reinforced the importance of creating more platforms that prepare young people for life beyond the classroom.

We commend Student Circle Initiative for organizing this impactful program and appreciate the partnership of the SRC of UHAS in making it possible.

Our CEO, Tsekpokumah Richard, recently visited the Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant ( ) in Akrofu, Volta Region.
During the visit, he engaged with the IRECOP team on key operations, including waste segregation, plastic recycling, and organic composting - processes vital to reducing pollution and promoting sustainable agriculture.

This experience reaffirmed Ayeyi Impact Foundation’s commitment to:

Report on Visit to Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant (IRECOP), Akrofu-Ho

Introduction

On behalf of the Ayeyi Impact Foundation, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Tsekpokumah Richard, paid a working visit to the Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant (IRECOP) located at Akrofu-Ho on the 3rd of September, 2025. The purpose of the visit was to gain practical insights into modern waste management practices, particularly in recycling and composting, and to explore potential areas of collaboration for promoting environmental sustainability.

Engagement at IRECOP

During the visit, Mr. Tsekpokumah Richard met with Mr. Yakubu Abubakari, a Senior Technical Officer at the facility. Mr. Abubakari provided an orientation on the plant’s operations, highlighting the processes involved in:

Waste segregation

Recycling of plastics and other materials

Composting of organic waste

Environmental benefits of integrated waste management

The orientation session provided valuable knowledge on how recycling and composting contribute to reducing environmental pollution, creating employment opportunities, and promoting a cleaner, healthier society.

Observations

The visit revealed the following key observations:

1. IRECOP operates with a structured system for waste separation and treatment.

2. The composting unit plays a crucial role in converting organic waste into valuable agricultural inputs.

3. Recycling activities at the plant significantly reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills.

4. There is potential for community-based education and partnerships to scale up the positive impact of IRECOP’s work.

Conclusion

The Ayeyi Impact Foundation, under the leadership of Mr. Tsekpokumah Richard, recognizes the importance of sustainable waste management and values the insights gained from the visit. The knowledge shared by Mr. Yakubu Abubakari will inform the Foundation’s environmental awareness campaigns and inspire future initiatives in recycling education, youth engagement, and community development.

The AYEYI Impact Foundation, in collaboration with community leaders, health professionals, and civic stakeholders, recently convened a workshop in Nkwanta North under the theme “Bridging the Gap of hashtag and hashtag Death: A Collective Responsibility.”
According to district health records, Nkwanta North recorded an institutional maternal mortality ratio of 92.74 per 100,000 live births in 2024, with three maternal and three infant deaths.
Discussions emphasized the urgent need for stronger male involvement in antenatal care, respectful and dignified treatment of mothers by healthcare professionals, and rebuilding trust between communities and health facilities to encourage timely and consistent care-seeking.
Our CEO, Tsekpokumah Richard, reiterated the Foundation’s commitment to mobilizing communities and stakeholders to reduce preventable maternal and infant deaths. Together, we can build a healthier future for mothers and children in hashtag North and beyond.
