🚀 Accelerating Ghana's Electric Mobility Transition 🚀
On Thursday, 24 April 2025, officially launched a 22-month (March 2025 - January 2027) research project, "Exploring Ghana's Transition Pathways to Electric Two- and Three-Wheelers," at Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra. The event brought together government officials from key agencies such as the Ministry of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, the Energy Commission, and the Ghana Standards Authority, alongside industry stakeholders including Solar Taxi, Wahu Mobility, Charge Express and Okada Riders. Academia and civil society organizations also participated, underscoring a diverse coalition committed to driving sustainable mobility forward.
Funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office under the Climate Compatible Growth (CCG) Flexible Research Fund (FRF), this project is being implemented by the Centre for Extractives and Development Africa (CEDA) seeks to address critical regulatory and policy gaps, evaluate economic feasibility, and propose actionable pathways for infrastructure development and local manufacturing capabilities for electric two- and three-wheelers (E2&3-wheelers).
Transport sector accounts for about 38% of Ghana's energy-related greenhouse gas emissions, with motorcycles and tricycles significantly contributing to emissions and urban mobility challenges. Transitioning to electric two- and three-wheelers presents an opportunity to substantially reduce emissions, foster economic growth through local manufacturing, create jobs, and enhance mobility accessibility.
The collaborative and inclusive approach adopted by the project underscores the importance of multi-stakeholder engagement in achieving sustainable and impactful outcomes in Ghana's electric mobility sector.
We thank all participants and stakeholders for their valuable insights and contributions and look forward to continued collaboration in driving Ghana's sustainable transport future.

We're thrilled to announce the successful kick-off of our exciting new project: "Exploring the Transition to Electric Two- & Three-Wheelers in Ghana" 🚀

On Tuesday, March 25, we held an engaging kick-off meeting with the Climate Compatible Growth to outline our implementation roadmap.

Our collaborative efforts aim to:
✅ Evaluate the impact of electric two- and three-wheelers (E2&3Ws) on employment and climate goals.
✅ Explore infrastructure constraints and electrification pathways.
✅ Identify critical policy gaps and propose evidence-based recommendations.
✅ Develop a comprehensive roadmap for integrating electric mobility into Ghana's transport ecosystem.

Together with Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and Climate Compatible Growth we are committed to driving economic opportunities, promoting gender equality and social inclusion, and ensuring regional equity through sustainable, low-carbon transport solutions.

Stay tuned for updates as we work toward a cleaner, greener future for Ghana! 🌍✨

The energy transition is bringing about significant changes in countries which host natural resources and is reshaping the energy and mining sectors. These shifts hold both promises and challenges for communities. While in some areas increased investment can usher in new revenue streams for local governments, generate employment, and fund community development, it also carries the potential to disrupt traditional ways of life and harm the environment.

Yesterday we marked the launch of the Ellembelle Energy Transition Committee (EETC), a key step in Ghana's journey towards a just energy transition. This committee will play an essential role in bridging the information gap on energy transition impacts, making data accessible and actionable for local communities. The EETC, in collaboration with stakeholders like the Ghana EITI and Centre for Extractives Development Africa (CEDA), will promote public advocacy, foster dialogue, and ensure local voices shape policy responses to climate challenges.

The Centre for Extractives Development Africa (CEDA) on behalf of (Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative) and with support from Ford Foundation as part of efforts is supporting to strengthen community access to data and dialogue platforms as part of (Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative) ‘Engaging Communities in a Just Transition’ project.

The committee’s goals include leading sensitization efforts across Ellembelle and using local media and community engagement platforms to communicate crucial insights on .

This initiative aligns with 's mission to empower communities in resource-rich areas to engage in decision-making and contribute meaningfully to global climate action.

Our Executive Director, Samuel Bekoe, participated in the High level Multi-Stakeholder Workshop organized by the African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC) on September 12-13, 2024, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Having co-authored the Sustainable Management of Mineral Resources in Ghana and their Alignment with the African Mining Vision ( ) alongside Theo Acheampong. Mr Bekoe’s involvement at this workshop was key in shaping the future of mineral governance in Africa.

The workshop reviewed the African Mining Vision (AMV) and African Minerals Governance Framework (AMGF) to address significant economic, geopolitical, and environmental changes over the past decade.

Key updates focused on the growing demand for green minerals, improving the effectiveness of implementation, aligning with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and responding to global geopolitical and supply chain disruptions to ensure the frameworks remain relevant and effective.
