The former Environment Minister, late Murtala Mohammed was a bookworm and an avid reader, and anyone who has ever had an interaction with him, will attest to this, considering his sharp intellect and vast knowledge.

He honored our invite twice and left indelible memories among members forever. In 2017, he was our lead discussant for the discussion of the book "The Autobiography of Malcolm Malcolm X" and our late Comrade gave us a whole lecture on X and beyond.

And secondly, he honored our end of year dinner night later in December.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, and the National Democratic Congress and also to the families of the seven other people involved.

Honerable, Murtala was a pious Muslim and may ALLāh gift him Jannah for free.

At Success BOOK CLUB, our goal is to completely eradicate illiteracy from our midst. That’s a tall order but with the profound commitment from Readers ( as we call our members) and you, we are resolved to achieve it, for an enlightened society is indeed an empowered society.

That said, join us tomorrow for a special Book Donation exercise at the Nima-Maamobi Community library. Thanks to the generous support of organizations like U.S. Embassy Ghana, Samira Bawumia Samira Empowerment & Humanitarian Projects-SEHP and Vidya Bookstore

we’re donating a wide range of books to five schools in the community.

Join us in this honorable act. Join us in empowering the next generation. Join us in refining the minds of our young ones. We will be honored to have Hon. Abdul Ganiyu Ibrahim the Municipal Chief Executive of Ayawaso East and Aburof

our foremost thinker & Nation builder in our midst. Come let’s do this for the community. Nana Aba Anamoah captured it beautifully when she said “ Children who read become adults who think.”

Hope to see you! It’s 8:30

Come for the Books, Stay for Us

_10 Years of Reading, 10 Years of Becoming_

Some chase pages, some chase class,
Some flip through life like it’s just a pass.
Some come for stories, some come for the fuss,
But what’s a club without the heart of us?

Some come to read, some come just to come,
Some stayed for the books, some stayed till they’re numb.
Some crack open books, some chase the looks,
Some found the depths, not just the hooks.

It’s funny how words can dance and collide,
How the same rhyme can build or divide.
One’s chasing the thrill, another the climb,
But somehow we all showed up, time after time.

The hook may be sweet, the cover may amuse,
But what’s a story if the meaning you lose?
So come—not just to pass—but to press,
To press for meaning, to press for us.

We turned the pages, we crossed the lines,
There’s more in these books than the spines we find.
Come as you are, but come to become—
Not just to chase but to truly come.

10 years in, we’ve built more than a shelf—
We’ve built a place to find ourselves.

In our ten-year journey as Success BOOK CLUB we have lost three cherished Readers.

The first was Habibul-lah Aweinia Sa-eed Zaaki, a passionate young man with a progressive mind for the business of life and success. He was an altruistic fellow with an overwhelmingly affable personality.

The second was Muhammad Babamu Shuaib Mbs. Another passionate leader, a community organizer, a youth activist and above all, a devoted caller to Allah and His Prophet. He was an avid reader and a good man who spread goodness wherever he found himself. He was the founder and first President of Ashaiman Readers Club - ARC. He never hesitated to call or reach out whenever he was unclear about something or needed guidance.

The third was Marsiya Mahama , a fine soul, kind and generous. She was known for her charitable work in her neighborhood. She had a burning desire to own and read books, using the lessons from those books to improve her life and the lives of others.

That said, it is also sad to note that we lost a mentor and three-time lead discussant, Muhammad Bagnya. An intellectual firebrand and great thinker. He always emphasized the need to focus on substance rather than form in our acts of worship.

May Allah forgive the sins of these wonderful individuals and grant them Jannah.

I nearly forgot. We also lost the man who launched our Book Club just a few weeks ago Nana Kwasi Gyan-Apenteng, a chief, renowned journalist, former chairman of the National Media Commission, and former president of the Ghana Association of Writers. May his family be comforted.

One of the books we read was The Last Breath by Osman Nuri Topbas. The book underscores the truth that there is certainty in the uncertainty of death. We are all certain that our lives are terminal but the “when” and “how” remain uncertain.

May Allah grant us long life and maximum health.

Ten years ago, we formed Success BOOK CLUB to provide young people with a platform to access books, read them, and apply the lessons learned to improve themselves, their communities, and the nation at large.

Founded in Nima, a community in dire need of development, where many young people face challenging circumstances from birth, we were inspired by several factors. First, we believed that education is a powerful tool that can transform even the most troubled individuals into people of honor. Secondly, the instruction “Read” to the Prophet Muhammad was seen as a call to civilization. We were further moved by the vision of the nation’s founders who called on all of us to work hard to eliminate illiteracy, knowing that doing so would help uproot many of the negative forces in our society.

When we began, we were young and unsure of what the world had in store for us, despite our big dreams. Today, most, if not all of us have attained remarkable positions in life. We can confidently say that we have amazed even ourselves with the progress we have made. Congratulations to us.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has supported us in any way throughout this ten-year journey. The road ahead is challenging, but we remain resolute in our commitment to fight illiteracy tooth, nail, and claw.

Happy anniversary…

Last Tuesday, 8th April, 2025 the U.S. Embassy Ghana honored our appeal by donating some books to us ahead of our tenth year anniversary celebration activities in July later this year.

Lizaimee Steger, the head of Regional Public Engagement Specialist (REPS) and the America Center Ghana team did the donation on behalf of the embassy. She highlighted the importance of supporting literacy groups and the importance of reading.

We intend to donate these books to some selected schools within the Ayawaso constituency as part of our anniversary celebration. One of the schools, IBAADULAHI Preparatory & Junior High School, graced the occassion with some of their students.

We truly appreciate this kind donation by the American Embassy and we are looking forward to a fruitful future partnerships.

" At midnight tonight, you get a most amazing gift: a fresh set of (8,760) hours. These hours are pure and flawless and limitless. They offer you the opportunity to show courage and behave brilliantly and forge new habits that will get you to a new place of being.

And they offer you a space to laugh. To love. And to do your dreams. Whether you’ll admit it or not, tomorrow is incredible. Not everyone gets one."
