Today we celebrate our co-founder Ahmed Abubakar. A year ago, he received a fully funded scholarship from the Mastercard Foundation to pursue an MPH in Maternal, Children and Adolescent Health at the number 1 public university in the US UC Berkeley. This opportunity also helped our organisation with networking opportunities and visibility.
Congratulations from all of us Zongo Care Initiative. Go higher director 👏

A Kenyan priest walked into a cancer ward and met a woman dying of cervical cancer.

Her suffering struck Father Chilufya deeply. When he learned that cervical cancer is primarily caused by HPV, which is up to 99% preventable with vaccination, he vowed to be part of the solution.

Now he leads priests and imams across Kenya to champion the HPV vaccine. "Science has found a way. Faith can close the gap," he says. His message spreads through weddings, funerals, and youth gatherings.

When faith leaders unite behind vaccines, they build trust, change minds and save lives.

As we continue in our cervical cancer advocacy, we're pleased to announce that the Zongo Care Initiative has won two grants in the amount of $20,000.

This money will be used for our Cervicare project where we aim to enhance our advocacy among Kayayei through peer educators, sharing of educational materials and screening for 250 of these ladies as a pilot program on the 20th of July 2025.

We met 10 of our peer educators where we took them through cervical cancer for them to relay this knowledge to their colleague kayayei.

This is the world we’re striving to achieve. A place where the vulnerable have access to quality healthcare regardless of financial capacity.

In a world where medical fees often run into thousands, one doctor in Patna has remained unchanged for 40 years. Dr Ejaz Ali, known as the messiah of the poor, charges just Rs 10 for consultations, ensuring quality healthcare remains accessible to those who need it most.

While many hospitals prioritise profit, Dr Ali prioritises people. His affordable surgeries, minimal fees, and commitment to seeing every patient the same day mean no one is forced to spend extra on travel or lodging. "I get satisfaction from such service to society," he told TOI.

His late wife followed the same path, and now, his three children—all doctors—are carrying forward his legacy of compassion. His son, trained at a prestigious American institute, charges just Rs 100, while his daughter, a gynaecologist, charges Rs 50. In many cases, even these fees are waived or paid in instalments.

Every day, in his simple kurta-pyjama, sitting on a plastic chair, Dr Ali treats over 100 patients and performs 7-8 surgeries—proving that medicine is not just about treatment, but about humanity.

A year ago, we launched the Zongo Care Initiative, driven by our passion to give back to society. Over the past 12 months, we've made tremendous progress, forging strong partnerships and implementing impactful initiatives.

Our achievements include:

- Registering approximately 700 vulnerable individuals, including children, women, and persons with disabilities, under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

- Free general and specialist consultation services for vulnerable populations

- Training 5 healthcare workers in cervical cancer screening.

- Conducting breast and cervical cancer screenings for around 100 women.

- Awareness creation of climate change

- Enhancing STEM education in two schools through strategic partnerships.

- Refurbishing and equipping the science laboratory at Additrom School.

We’re grateful to all our volunteers and as we look to the future, we're committed to expanding our initiatives and partnerships to drive positive change in our Zongo communities and beyond

We successfully launched our inaugural breast cancer awareness and screening program, in partnership with the Office of Sarkin Musulmi Ashaiman and Salvation Army Health Services. This impactful event educated 63 women on breast cancer, self-examination techniques and provided essential screenings.

Empowered by knowledge, these women can now champion early detection, saving lives.

A week ago, we had the pleasure of hosting Delcy, a lecturer from Columbia University in New York, and her team. Delcy's passion project, a robotics after-school program for young children, was put on hold due to COVID-19. Now, she's reviving it in Africa, specifically in Ghana.

During their visit, we took Delcy and her team to Darussalam School at Zabarma Line and Additrom School at Adabraka. Impressed by the potential, they pledged to support both schools with vital resources to enhance STEM education.

This partnership enables us to launch our eagerly awaited after-school STEM program for local kids. With Delcy's team providing essential resources, we're confident of nurturing young minds and unlocking their full potential.

Over the past few months, we've been collaborating with the management and science department of Additrom School to enhance student participation in science.

As part of our commitment, we've refurbished and equipped the school's science laboratory with essential equipment, benefiting over 200 students. The official handover took place on September 11, 2024, attended by management and Form 3 students.

We hope to replicate this initiative in other schools within the Zongo communities, promoting greater access to quality science education.
