World AIDS Day 2025 Statement
Theme: “Overcoming Disruption, Transforming the AIDS Response”
African Institute for Global Health Advocacy and Sustainable Development (AIGHASD) joins the global community today in reaffirming our commitment to ending HIV/AIDS as a public health threat.
This year’s theme reminds us that the AIDS response has endured unprecedented challenges; from pandemics and health-system shocks to donor fluctuations, misinformation, and widening inequities. These disruptions, while daunting, have also revealed opportunities for transformation, innovation, and community-led resilience.
At AIGHASD, we have witnessed firsthand the power of grassroots engagement, co-creation, and policy advocacy in driving sustainable health outcomes. We stand with people living with HIV, healthcare workers, researchers, policymakers, and community organizations who continue to innovate care and uphold dignity, even in constrained environments.
However, the work ahead remains urgent. To transform the AIDS response, we must:
Strengthen health systems to sustain essential HIV services amid crises
Expand equitable access to new prevention and treatment options, including long-acting therapies
Invest in local manufacturing, supply chain resilience, and domestic funding solutions
Prioritize vulnerable populations who continue to bear disproportionate burdens
Fight stigma and misinformation with evidence, empathy, and community-centered strategies
HIV/AIDS is not only a medical issue—it is a matter of human rights, social justice, and sustainable development. Ending it demands more than treatment coverage; it demands structural transformation, political commitment, and unwavering partnership with affected communities.
On this World AIDS Day, AIGHASD remains committed to learning, collaborating, and contributing to solutions that are African-driven, equity-focused, sustainable, and people-centered.
Together, we can overcome disruptions—and transform the future of the AIDS response.
