The African Youth Empowerment and Development, Ghana is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) committed to providing a platform for the inspiration and empowerment of the youth in Ghana and beyond through promoting opportunities to support, connect and grow young people in business, industry and politics through training, mentoring, networking, strategic alliances, and developing and recognising e
xcellence in young people. AYED, Ghana aims to assist the youth of Ghana and Africa in understanding the growing importance of, and greater potential for youth empowerment and activism for participation in business, industry and politics. The organisation seeks to provide services and opportunities to support all young people in developing a sense of competence, usefulness, belongingness and empowerment. In order to realise the vision of the organisation, all the programmes and activities of the organisation will be targeted towards the following:
• Supports: Motivational, emotional and strategic supports to succeed in life. The supports will take many different forms, but they will be affirming, respectful and ongoing. The supports will be offered by a variety of people, such as parents and close relatives, community social networks, teachers, youth workers, employers, and peers who are involved in the lives of young people.
• Opportunities: Chances for young people to learn how to act in the world around them, to explore, express, earn, belong, and influence. These opportunities will give young people the chance to test ideas and behaviours, and to experiment with different roles. It is important to stress that young people, just like adults, learn best through active participation and that learning occurs in all types of settings and situations.
• Quality services: The services to be provided the youth will be in such areas as education, health, employment, international relations and diplomacy. There will be challenging opportunities to express oneself, to contribute, to take on new roles, and be a part of a team and supportive adults and peers who provide respect, high standards and expectations, guidance and affirmation to young people.
