Junior Achievement Africa Junior Achievement (JA) Africa prepares Africa's youth for the 21st century workforce JA Africa's work focuses on the economic empowerment of Africa's youth.

We bridge the gap between what students learn in school and what they need to be successful professionals in adulthood. JA focuses on three key areas: Entrepreneurship, Work Readiness and Financial Literacy. Our experiential programs make these concepts come alive for students, using volunteers from the professional world to coach and mentor them as they consider their future careers. We believe that entrepreneurship is a key to enabling the burgeoning and marginalized youth population in Africa. But we also believe in preparing young people to be successful either as employees who add value to their employers or as entrepreneurs who create jobs for themselves and others.

JA Africa is inviting proposals for a tracer study of the SET4LYF (School-to-Work Educational Transitions for Long-Term Youth Fulfilment (SET4LYF) programme. in Nigeria and Rwanda. JA Africa is at the ONE Academy launch, UNGA81.

Simi Nwogugu, President & CEO of JA Africa, joins Serigne Mbaye Thiam, GPE High-Level Envoy and Adviser for Education, Former Minister of Education, Republic of Senegal; Victoria Egbetayo, Senior Program Officer, Global Education of the Gates Foundation, on the Expert Plenary panel, moderated by Serah Makka, Executive Director of ONE Africa, to explore what it takes to move from knowing what works to making change happen at scale.

The evidence on foundational learning isn't in short supply. What's harder to build is the will, the partnerships, and the systems to act on it, and that's a gap JA Africa works to close every day through entrepreneurship education and work readiness across the continent.

This conversation sits inside a bigger mission: equipping young Africans with the knowledge and advocacy skills to turn solutions into action in their own communities.

DAY ONE |

CEO of JA Africa, Simi Nwogugu, started her UNGA journey by participating in the NIN Borderless Summit on Saturday, September 19.

The Nigerians in New York (NIN) Borderless Summit brought together prominent leaders from the diaspora across diverse sectors, all of whom are shaping the future of business, policy, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

Simi spoke at the panel titled "Career Growth: From Those Who Enable It and Those Who’ve Done It", alongside Rosy Fynn, Country Director (Nigeria), Mastercard Foundation, and LeRoy Cole, Career & Leadership Coach.

The panel focused on the systems, institutions, and people necessary to support young professionals facing or considering transitions in their careers. In this session, panelists spoke about major transitions in their own careers and how mentors and sponsors have supported them.

Simi encouraged attendees to build expertise in specific areas so that it is easier for sponsors to advocate before their advancement. She also urged the attendees to mentor young people back home who need their support with the transition from secondary school to higher education and work through the JA Volunteer University (DeJAVU) platform.

JA Africa is at UNGA81.

Every September, world leaders gather to shape the decisions that ripple down to classrooms, communities, and young entrepreneurs across the globe. This year's theme, "Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All," speaks directly to the work JA Africa does every day: building trust between young people and the systems meant to serve them, and managing the transformation that comes when opportunity finally reaches those who've been locked out of it.

Being in the room at UNGA81 matters. It's where funding conversations start, where governments and multilateral institutions align on what youth development should look like, and where partnerships that can scale entrepreneurship education across the continent take shape. For the young people JA Africa serves, from Burkina Faso to Rwanda to Kenya, this isn't distant diplomacy. It's the groundwork for the next grant, the next policy shift, the next door opened.

JA Africa is representing that mission this week in New York, alongside partners committed to building boundless potential for Africa's young people.

Responsibility looks like this.

Ange Kevine used to see challenges the way most people do, as someone else's problem to fix. JA Africa changed that. Through the Company of the Year Competition, she learned to stop waiting and start asking a different question: what can she do, right now, to begin?

That shift, from waiting to acting, is the quiet engine behind entrepreneurship education. It doesn't just teach young people how to build a business. It teaches them to see themselves as the ones who solve the problem.

This year, students like Ange Kevine take that same lesson further, from classroom idea to continental stage. At the 16th Company of the Year Competition in Cape Town, a new wave of young entrepreneurs will make that same leap: from local finalist to Africa's brightest young business minds, standing shoulder to shoulder with peers from across the continent.

16 years of JA Africa COY. Still more than pitches.

This year marks the 16th Company of the Year Competition, and JA Africa is bringing it to Cape Town, South Africa.

Every year, students from across the continent come together to pitch, compete, and show the world what young African entrepreneurs can build. But if you've ever been in the room, you know it's more than that. It's the CEO of JA Africa, Simi Nwogugu, on her feet, dancing. Partners, board members, and JA friends joining the celebration. Staff bringing their own energy to the stage. Students marking every win, big or small, in their own way.

Sixteen years in, JA Africa COY is still where the hardest work and the warmest moments happen together.

Every young person on that stage worked hard to be there, and their story deserves to reach everyone watching. Last year, JA Africa brought sign language interpreters into the Company of the Year Competition, from the opening ceremony through the Stakeholder Convening, so more people could follow every part of the journey, not just watch from the outside.

There's still more ground to cover. Over the past year, JA Africa has worked with its MERL team to better understand who falls under marginalized groups across our programs, so every young person, regardless of ability, background, or circumstance, has a real path to their full potential.

Inclusion isn't a checkbox. It's work JA Africa keeps learning and building on, together with the communities it serves.
